‎Weather Underground; Dohrn, Bernadine; Jones, Jeff; Ayers, Billy [Bill]; Sojourn, Celia; et al‎

‎Prairie Fire - The Politics of Revolutionary Anti-Imperialism: The Political Statement of the Weather Underground‎

‎"Here is PRAIRIE FIRE, our political ideology - a strategy for anti-imperialism and revolution inside the imperial US. This paper has been collectively adopted as the political statement of the Weather Underground. PRAIRIE FIRE is written to communist-minded revolutionaries, independent organizers and anti-imperialists. It is written as an argument against those who oppose action and hold back the struggle." - Opening statement by Bernadine Dohrn, Billy (Bill) Ayers, Jeff Jones and Celia Sojourn. pp. [6], 7- 186, [6]. Frequently illustrated with grainy black and white reproductions of photos. Includes list of books studied in the preparation of this work. Chapters include: Impressions of U.S. History; Imperialism in Crisis - The Third World; Imperialism in Crisis - The Home Front; Against the Common Enemy; and more. "We are a guerrilla organization. We are communist women and men, underground in the United States for more than four years... Our intention is to disrupt the empire... to incapacitate it... to forge an underground, a clandestine political organization engaged in every form of struggle, protected from the eyes and weapons of the state, a base against repression, to accumulate lessons, experience and constant practice, a base from which to attack." - page 1 of an earlier edition. Prior to publication the Weather Underground had already bombed multiple government buildings. Twenty-one years after publication, Ayers and Dohrn hosted a meeting at which Illinois state Sen. Alice Palmer introduced Barack Obama as her chosen successor. The rest is history. Clean and unmarked with moderate wear. Binding tight. Sunning to spine. A sound vintage copy of this work, the influence of which dominates headlines almost fifty years after publication . 8.5" x 5.5". Book‎

‎Extracts from Mr. Webster's Speeches in the Senate in 1834 on the Subject of Currency‎

‎Washington DC: Gales and Seaton 1837. Softcover. Very Good. 43 pp disbound. A few spots of light soiling to title page small stain to upper margin; else clean. First two pages loosening from rest of text block but not detached. Speeches delivered in the months leading up to the passage of the Coinage Act in June 1834. The brief publisher's introduction notes: "Upon reading through the whole of these occasional speeches of Mr. Webster they appear to treat the subject of currency so clearly and to state its importance not then so generally felt as it now is so fully and they show so far-sighted and perfect a discernment of the consequences of the measures which Government was at the time pursuing that is has been thought useful to make a small collection of extracts of these several performances and to publish them together." ‎Webster, Daniel; Rives, William C; Calhoun, John C; Buchanan, James; Benton, Thomas H; Woodbury, Levi‎

‎The North American Review Vol. LVI‎

‎Boston: David H. Williams 1843 Boston: Williams 1843. First edition. 8vo. Quarter-leather 523. Calf over marble boards leather spine labels. Bookplate of Dr. Joshua Green. Contains several articles on the Treaty of Washington also known as the Webster-Ashburton Treaty. The Webster-Ashburton Treaty signed August 9 1842 settled the dispute over the location of the Maine-New Brunswick border between the United States and Great Britain and the shared use of the Great Lakes. It also reaffirmed the location of the border at the 49th parallel in the westward frontier up to the Rocky Mountains originally defined in the Treaty of 1818. It also called for a final end to the slave trade on the high seas to be enforced by both signatories. The Treaty was signed by United States Secretary of State Daniel Webster and United Kingdom Privy Counsellor Alexander Baring Lord Ashburton. A plaque commemorating the treaty was placed at the site of the old State Department building in Washington D.C. where the signing occurred. The Treaty is responsible for two geographic oddities. First since Fort Montgomery a U.S. fort in northeastern New York had been constructed on Canadian soil the border between Maine and the St. Lawrence was adjusted to 3/4 of a mile north of the 45th parallel this placing the abandoned fort on U.S. soil. Second the incorrect assumption in the Treaty of Paris that the source of the Mississippi River lay north of the Lake of the Woods would result in the enclave of the Northwest Angle being part of the U.S.This treaty marked the end of unofficial fighting known informally as the Aroostook or Lumberjack's War along the Maine-New Brunswick border and resolved issues that had led to the Indian Stream conflict as well as the Caroline Affair. The border was fixed with the disputed territory divided between the two nations. Also as a result of this treaty portions of the western U.S.-Canada border were adjusted so as to be consistent. It gave the U.S. negligibly more land to the north; iron ore was later discovered on this land. The Creole case was passed over by both nations. The treaty was an unforeseen bonus for the United States. The British in adjusting the US-Canadian boundary farther west lost a vital area to the US that contained the priceless Mesabi iron ore of Minnesota. "A Message from the President of the United States transmitting to the Senate a Treaty with Great Britain and the Correspondence between Mr. Webster and Lord Ashburton 1842"; "Speech on the Treaty with Great Britain delivered in the United States Senate by William C. Rives 1842"; "Speech in the Senate on the Treaty of Washington by John C. Calhoun 1842"; "Speech on the Ratification of the Treaty with Great Britain delivered in the Senate of the United States by James Buchanan"; "Speech in the Senate in Opposition to the Treaty by Thomas H. Benton"; "Speech in the Senate on Several Points arising in the Discussion of the Treaty with England by Levi Woodbury 1842." Near fine. David H. Williams hardcover‎

‎Webster, Daniel (1782-1852).‎

‎SPEECH OF DANIEL WEBSTER, IN REPLY TO MR. HAYNE, OF SOUTH CAROLINA: The Resolution of Mr. Foot, of Connecticut, Relative to Public Lands, Being Under Consideration. Delivered in the Senate, January 26, 1830.‎

‎72p. Bound with hundreds of blank pages. Foxed. 8vo. Bound in marbled boards with a crudely repaired spine. AI 5382. The first edition of an important artifact in the history of the states rights debate that boiled in the run-up to the Civil War. Inked ownership of "Brookes". This was previously thought to be Preston Smith Brooks (1819-1857) a Congressman from South Carolina, known notoriously for brutally assaulting senator Charles Sumner on the floor of the United States Senate, on May 22, 1856 - But a closer look has it as Brookes rather than Brooks. In any event, it is an extremely important speech in U.S. history. It is here that Wester declares 'Liberty AND Union, now and forever, one and inseparable.' AMERICANA BOX 7.‎
