In France who became almost like a daughter to Gen. Lafayette. She and her sister returned to America and with Lafayette were guests of Jefferson at Monticello. Later as a U.S. citizen she founded the Nashoba commune in Tennessee in anticipation of emancipation. She visited New York and Philadelphia West Point Niagara Falls Lake Errie and on to Lower Canada Montreal Lake Champlain Burlington Vermont Washington D.C. to Virginia with many observations along the way. This edition has a dedication to Lafayette by the translator who also supplied a new translation. Vol. 1 ends with remarks upon Morris Birkbeck's letters about the Illinois country. All in all Fanny Wright became one of the most remarkable women of the first half of the 19th century: among other accomplishments being the first woman to write this work the first travelogue by a woman. "Doctors had written about the cave before but with Charles W. Wright M.D. of the Kentucky School of Medicinein Louisville a new era of Mammoth Cave medical authors began.Wright was present in Mammoth Cave during the first descent of a deep pit known as the Maelstrom and he was one of the first explorers of Diamond Caverns. His book The Mammoth Cave of Kentucky was published in 1858 and again in 1859. In 1860 he revised and enlarged it. As A Guide Manual to the Mammoth Cave the 1860 edition became the standard reference book about the cave until it was replaced nine years later by Dr. Binkerd's book. Even after Binkerd's book was replaced by Dr. Forwood's book Wright's Guide Manual was still in demand. It was republished in 1870 and again in 1875." First edition limited to 166 copies this one of 140 of the regular edition; folio pp. 71 4; orig. tan cloth-backed blue paper-covered boards showing the repeated design of the Sumac pressmark leather label on spine; as new in publisher's slipcase. Illustrated throughout with 24 facsimiles woodcuts ink-jet reproductions ephemera and 7 color wood-engravings by the artist-printer Gaylord Schanilec. Introduction by Rob Rulon-Miller and with a check-list by him of better than 270 books chapbooks broadsides etc. printed by Emerson Wulling at his Sumac Press in both Minneapolis and La Crosse Wisconsin. The text proper consists of an interview conducted by Gaylord Schanilec and Rob Rulon-Miller with Emerson Wulling in 1995 and 1999. Wulling who began printing in 1916 and continued to print into the 21st century printed longer than any printer before him - 87 years in all - a record of sorts which will quite probably never be broken.
