Annapolis MD: State of Maryland Executive Department 1863. Paperback. Self-cover. 8vo. 4pp. Very good. Minor binding traces. Clean and bright with an attractive Maryland state seal at upper left of the first page. This November 2nd proclamation "To the Citizens of the State and more especially the Judges of Election" indignantly protests a military order stating that "evil disposed persons" found in Maryland and tolerated by state officials would be attempting to disrupt elections and authorized military personnel and provost marshals to arrest persons loitering about polling places. The text of General Schenck's October 27th General Order No. 53 giving this direction is included as is Lincoln's directive revoking the offensive portion of Schenck's order. Uncommon. This booklet gives the genealogy of the Brant and Overlin families along with details of their lives and portions of letters along with images of important documents. Especially important in this history is the story of Chief Brant of the Mohawk / Canajoharie who was a noted relative. "While not born into a hereditary leadership role within the Iroquois League Brant rose to prominence due to his education abilities and connections to British officials. His sister Molly Brant was the wife of Sir William Johnson the influential British Superintendent of Indian Affairs in the province of New York. During the American Revolutionary War Brant led Mohawk and colonial Loyalists known as "Brant's Volunteers" against the rebels in a bitter partisan war on the New York frontier. He was accused by the Americans of committing atrocities and given the name "Monster Brant" but the accusations were argued by later historians to have been false. Spined sunned but legible with slight fraying to cloth; corners rubbed light scattered foxing. Bremer 1801-1865 was a Swedish writer and champion of women's rights. Her domestic novels were very popular both at home and abroad and earned her the sobriquet "the Swedish Jane Austen." In 1849 Bremer visited the United States where she was welcomed in New England as a kindred spirit for her antislavery sentiments. There she met with Ralph Waldo Emerson Henry Wadsworth Longfellow James Russell Lowell and Nathaniel Hawthorne among others.
