Wear to the corners and spine ends with one small chip at the rear hinge see photo. Bound in the original brown cloth with decorative blind stamping to the spine and boards both front and rear. The spine is gilt-stamped "Message and Documents 1858-9 Part 1." Below the spine is blind-stamped "House Document." NOT a library discard. Previous owner's name on endpaper. NO underlining. NO margin notes. A small percentage of pages are age-toned or show light foxing. However the vast majority are clean with NO foxing. This is the House of Representatives version 35th Congress 2d session Ex. Doc. No. 2. Altogether there are 750 pages see photo #5. It begins with President James Buchanan's State of the Union message pp. 1-72 followed by reports from the Secretary of the Interior Jacob Thompson pp. 73-750. President Buchanan's report starts by discussing the issues of Kansas statehood and the slavery question there followed by a few pages concerning the results of the 1857-58 military expedition sent into Utah to remove Brigham Young as governor of the territory and to force the population to submit to the authority of the United States government. At pages 69-72 is a reprint of President Buchanan's famous Proclamation concerning the necessity of this "Utah War" and the need for citizens of Utah to abide by the laws. Eborn notes that this volume also has material on the land survey in Utah and the Indians there. In Secretary of the Interior Thompson's report there is much of interest on the settlement of Public Lands; Indian Affairs; the upcoming 1860 Census; land surveys of Florida Louisiana California Washington New Mexico and Oregon Territory; penitentiary reports including a detailed "Journal of Convicts " for Washington D.C.; pensions; public buildings; etc. See Flake 9220 in A MORMON BIBLIOGRAPHY. Both inner and outer hinges are perfectly sound. Bound in the original brown cloth with decorative blind stamping to the spine and boards both front and rear. The spine is gilt-stamped "Message and Documents 1858-9 Part 2." Below the spine is blind-stamped "House Document." NOT a library discard. NO owner's name or bookplate. Text is clean with almost NO foxing. NO underlining. NO margin notes. This is the House of Representatives version 35th Congress 2d session Ex. Doc. No. 2. This entire volume all 670 pages consists of the report of Secretary of War John B. Floyd. Included are over 200 pages on affairs in the Utah Territory and conduct and results of the Mormon War -- the 1857-58 military expedition sent into Utah to remove Brigham Young as governor of the territory and to force the population to submit to the authority of the United States government. Included are several Brigham Young letters and documents including one that confirms the events of a conference held in Great Salt Lake City on the 11th and 12th of June 1858. At page 113 is the proclamation by Alfred Cummings governor of Utah Territory accepting President Buchanan's pardon for "all treasons and seditions" committed by the inhabitants of Utah. There are also sizable quantities of material about other parts of the West -- e.g. expeditions and explorations in Nebraska the Dakotas Texas New Mexico etc. Pages 426-434 report on a military expedition from Ft. Leavenworth to Minnesota that had orders to require Indians to cease hostilities and to notify all British subjects who were in the habit of entering the territory of the United Stated for hunting and trapping that "such depredations" would no longer be permitted. Pages 456-491 constitute a report with 20 illustrations on the establishment in America of a "dromedary corps" of camels for military use. Other reports detail expeditions against hostile "Northern Indians" near Fort Walla-Walla Washington Territory; the "Navajo Expedition" in New Mexico; a peace treaty with the Nez Percés Tribe; etc. Flake 9251 in A MORMON BIBLIOGRAPHY: "Includes material on the Utah expedition and affairs in Utah with pertinent correspondence orders etc.".
