‎Le 4 juillet 1776, les treize colonies anglaises d’Amérique du Nord proclament leur indépendance et la guerre, déjà larvée depuis quelques mois, devient une vraie guerre qui ne prendra fin que sept ans plus tard, le 3 septembre 1783, avec le traité de Paris, qui consacrera définitivement la naissance des États-Unis. Ne pouvant mobiliser qu’environ 20 000 hommes, essentiellement des cultivateurs sans expérience de la guerre, les Insurgents n’auraient jamais pu l’emporter seuls face à une armée britannique composée de 42 000 soldats professionnels, bien entraînés et renforcés par près de 30 000 mercenaires allemands. C’est l’entrée en guerre de la France en juin 1778, qui allait ouvrir le chemin de la victoire. Le siège et la prise de Yorktown, le 19 octobre 1781, devaient marquer le point de non-retour de cette guerre. Le rôle capital de la France dans l’indépendance américaine, illustré par le personnage emblématique de La Fayette, est bien connu et régulièrement célébré des deux côtés de l’Atlantique à l’occasion d’anniversaires ou d’autres temps forts dans les relations entre la France et les États-Unis. Curieusement, le rôle de la Bretagne et des Bretons dans cette guerre qui a donné naissance aux États-Unis, aujourd’hui première puissance mondiale, est resté largement dans l’ombre. Pourtant, plus de 20 000 Bretons prirent part à la Guerre d’Amérique et près de 2 000 d’entre eux y ont perdu leur vie, de nombreux affrontements navals eurent lieu tout près des côtes bretonnes; la Bretagne toute entière vibra ardemment pour la cause américaine et des Bretons partirent dès 1776 et 1777, dont le marquis de La Rouërie, le fameux “colonel Armand”, combattre aux côtés de George Washington; le rôle des ports bretons fut capital dans le ravitaillement des colonies révoltées; on peut dire que l’US Navy est née en Bretagne, sa première unité ayant été un navire de la Compagnie des Indes, de Lorient; plus encore que Beaumarchais, c’est un Nantais, très injustement oublié, Jacques Donatien Le Ray de Clermont, qui a été le principal financeur et fournisseur d’armes et de munitions de l’armée de Washington et c’est sa demeure de Passy, où il a hébergea son ami Benjamin Franklin, qui joua durant toute la guerre le rôle d’ambassade officieuse des États-Unis…Voir le sommaire sur photos jointes.‎

Fresh and crisp apparently never read. Handsomely bound in full brown leather that is gilt stamped and embossed with a western motif/cattle longhorn design. The binding on this copy is GENUINE LEATHER superior to the cheaper leatherette imitation leather found on later printings. Although at first glance leatherette can look a lot like leather it does not age as gracefully in the long run. Printed on one of the book's preliminary pages is the following statement: "This volume is bound in leather." Laid-in is the publisher's introductory letter which also says in part: "This leather-bound volume." These references to leather were removed later for the imitation leather copies. A volume in the Classics of the Old West series. Illustrated with a 3-page fold-out frontispiece map of Montana parts of Idaho and Colorado Wyoming and the Dakota Territory several scenic views/engravings and 2 maps of Fort Philip Kearney D.T. Subtitle: "Being the Experience of an Officer's Wife on the Plains and Marking the Vicissitudes of Peril and Pleasure during the Occupation of the New Route to Virginia City Montana 1866-7 and the Indian Hostility Thereto with Outlines of the Natural Features and Resources of the Land Tables of Distances Maps and Other Aids to the Traveler." According to Colton Storm this is "An excellent personal account fortified by invaluable additional material from the author's husband Colonel Henry B.
