Charles A Clark (Brevet-Lieut-Colonel)
Autographed 1897 Civil War General McClellan: A Paper Read Before the Iowa Commandery; Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States
Kenyon Press 1897-01-01. Leather. Acceptable. Signed by Author. This copy is AUTOGRAPHED by the Author on the blank free front endpage in pencil - 'Presented to Col F. G. Gounnon by the Author.' That last name is difficult to make out. Autographed but not Signed in that the author wrote the above note in his own hand but didn't Sign his name merely writing 'by the Author' instead. Not an entirely uncommon thing to do in that era. Full leather limp boards. Fair 2 of 10 top corner water-stained. leather chipped at all edges and detached from boards at edges - still attached at spine. B&W author frontis plate with tissue guard. Bagged for protection with a stiff backing board. 41 pages. illustrated endpages. Gilt cover title thin - no title printed on the spine. Only 9 copies of this book are shown on worldcat. This might be the only Autographed copy yet existent. George Brinton McClellan December 3 1826 – October 29 1885 was an American soldier civil engineer railroad executive and politician who served as the 24th Governor of New Jersey. A graduate of West Point McClellan served with distinction during the Mexican–American War 1846–1848 and later left the Army to work on railroads until the outbreak of the American Civil War 1861–1865. Early in the conflict McClellan was appointed to the rank of major general and played an important role in raising a well-trained and organized army which would become the Army of the Potomac in the Eastern Theater; he served a brief period November 1861 to March 1862 as general-in-chief of the Union Army. McClellan organized and led the Union army in the Peninsula Campaign in southeastern Virginia from March through July 1862. It was the first large-scale offensive in the Eastern Theater. Making an amphibious clockwise turning movement around the Confederate Army in northern Virginia McClellan's forces turned west to move up the Virginia Peninsula between the James and York Rivers landing from the Chesapeake Bay with the Confederate capital Richmond as their objective. Initially McClellan was somewhat successful against General Joseph E. Johnston but the emergence of General Robert E. Lee to command the Army of Northern Virginia turned the subsequent Seven Days Battles into a partial Union defeat. However historians note that Lee's victory was in many ways pyrrhic as he failed to destroy the Army of the Potomac and suffered a bloody repulse at Malvern Hill. Charles, Douglas M.
J. Edgar Hoover and the Anti-Interventionists : FBI political surveillance and the rise of the domestic security state. 1939-1945
Small quarto orange and brown glossy illus baords; ix, 197 pages ; 24 cm; bibliographical references (pages 179-192) and index. "In this manuscript, Douglas M. Charles reveals how FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover catered to President Franklin D. Roosevelt's political interests. Between 1939 and 1945, the Federal Bureau of Investigation monitored the political activities of President Roosevelt's anti-interventionist foreign policy critics. Hoover, whose position as FBI director was tenuous within the left-of-center Roosevelt administration, catered to the president's political and policy interests in order to preserve his position and to expand FBI authority. In his pragmatic effort to service administration political goals, Hoover employed illegal wiretaps and informers, collected derogatory information, conducted investigations that had the potential to discredit the anti-interventionists, forwarded political intelligence to administration officials, and coordinated some activity with British intelligence. This all occurred within a crisis atmosphere created with the onset of the Second World War, and it was this political dynamic that permitted Hoover to successfully cultivate his relationship with President Roosevelt. In the process, the administration's otherwise legitimate foreign policy opposition - regarded by some as subversive - had their civil liberties violated through intensive FBI scrutiny of their political dissent. Moreover, the FBI's surveillance marks the origins of the FBI's role in the later national security state. Among the targets examined in this book are Charles Lindbergh, the America First Committee, notable anti-interventionist senators and congressmen, the anti-interventionist press, and other prominent individuals who advocated American isolation from foreign war."ó Publisher. / Contents: Introduction -- Background -- Beginnings : war, phony war, and election, 1939-40 -- Intensification : the lend-lease debate, America First, and its allies, December 1940 to summer 1941 -- Focus : from great debate stalemate to wartime probe, mid-1941 to summer 1942 -- Retribution : the FBI and the Victory Program leak, 4 December 1941 to mid-1942 -- Blossoming of the domestic security state, November 1941 to March 1942 -- Conclusion. / World War, 1939-1945 -- United States.
