CROSBY Harry H.

Croy, Homer
Wheels West Signed The Story of the Donner Party
New York: Hastings House. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 1955. First Edition. Hardcover. <br>Gray over dusky rose cloth black lettering. Spine slightly cocked corners bumped a little edge wear and rubbing some sunning along top and bottom edges. Jacket in new Brodart spine sunned some chipping along top and bottom edges and along flap creases. Overall an attractive copy. ; <br>This is a presentation copy inscribed by the author to Douglas F. Storer on the front end paper. There are a number of personal touches by Mr. Croy including several tipped in photos and newspaper articles humorous handwritten notes to and about Douglas Storer. There is a typed note to Storer on the letterhead of the Semiramis Hotel Cairo and a blurb from the publisher including purchasing options. <br>It seems likely that this Douglas Storer is the one who produced <i>Ripley's Believe It or Not </i> from 1933 to about 1960 and subsequently founded the <i>Amazing but True</i> franchise of books radio shows etc. ; 7¾" - 9¾" Tall; 242 pages; <p>" If ever a tale of the pioneer west was unfolded 'whose lightest word could make each particular hair to stand on end' this account of the ill-fated Donner Party is it. Eighty-seven people set out for the promised land of California - only forty-four survived to reach their goal after a year of incredible hardship and suffering. Homer Croy tells the true story of this tragic Odyssey in an exciting and suspenseful narrative that holds the reader spellbound from start to finish. <br> "In a way this recounts the consequences of a fateful decision. After a grueling trek across the Great Plains the Donner Party arrived at Fort Laramie in the fall of 1846. Because of the lateness of the season they took a 500-mile cut-off. This proved their undoing for they reached the 7000-foot pass in the Sierras which today bears their name in furious snow-storms which trapped them there for months - till they were reduced to chewing boiled ox hides and finally to cannibalism. Almost incredible acts of heroism as well as dark deeds of violence all come vividly to life in these pages. " ; Signed by Author . Hastings House hardcover
