South of Joplin: Story of a Tri-State Diggin's
New York: W. W. Norton & Company 1939. Stated first edition. Square and unmarked in full cloth binding. Lacking dj. 290pp. Photos. -- This story has its real beginning with the sinking of the first shaft in the tri-state district at which Missouri Oklahoma and Kansas meet. It is a long story full of struggle drama American humor and the American dream. In this book however I have attempted to deal only with events since the spring of 1935. I had lived with these people a large part of my life attended school with many of them and later taught their children. But during the period covered here years of continual labor war I saw them for the first time trying to cope with a situation more baffling by far than the poverty and ignorance that had shackled them since "bonanza days.". A Discoverie of the True Causes why Ireland was euer entirely Subdued nor brought vnder Obedience of the Crowne of England Vntill the beginning of His Majesties happie Raigne James Ist. : by Sir John Davies knt. printed exactly from the edition in 161
Dublin: Printed for Richard Watts in Skinner-Row and Laurence Flin in Castle-Street. Poor. 1761. Hardcover. xii 196 pp 26 index 2 leaves pub. ads; 16mo; full brown calf. Front board detached; ownership signature Thomas Knight 1829 with four line note "Collection of Irish History from the reign of Elizabeth etc. front endpaper. Thomas Knight's name also written vertically accross top portion of title page. At the end of the half page of text on xii begins in a miniscule holograph hand presumed by Knight an account of Lady Davies who according to the preceeding Author's Life "had or pretended to have a spirit of prophecy" and it was reported that she predicted her husband's death the Sunday before his being found dead of an apoplexy on the morning of Thursday 8th of December 1626 just before his installation as Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench. The writing continues onto the next blank page printed oddly with only the words HISTORICAL RELATIONS the preceeding page also having the word HISTORICAL printed below the text apparently relating an anecdote about Lady Davies who having made prophecies of bad luck for the Duke of Buckingham and other predictions of a mischevious nature was brought before the High Commission where the proceedings apparently involved her claims of the prophet Daniel infused into her body based on an anagram of her name Eleanor Davies and ultimately being "shot with arrows from her own quiver" by the Bishop suggesting Dame Eleanor Davies - never so mad a lady. What fun in the margins. . Printed for Richard Watts in Skinner-Row and Laurence Flin in Castle-Street hardcover

Davieson, S & D
Practische Beobachtungen uber Nervenschwäche und körperlicher Erschöpfung Practical Observations on Nervous Debility & Physical Exhaustion
St. Louis 1878. Softcover. Good. Scarce German-language medical booklet issued by the proprietors of the Grand Museum of Anatomy in St. Louis. 5.75" x 3.75" 161 pp. Text complete and binding sound. but lacks wrappers and a large chip is missing from the lower corner of the title page; good. According to Atwater 1399 describing a catalogue from the museum but also citing the English-language edition of this work "In 1874 David Davieson received his degree from the Eclectic Medical College of New York. For two years prior to graduation he was one of the partners in the European Anatomical Pathological and Ethnological Museum in Philadelphia. The year of his graduation Davieson returned to St. Louis where he opened the Grand Museum of Anatomy" where he was later joined by his brother Sydney. The museum displayed "an eclectic assortment of stuffed birds anatomical models dissected parts pathological specimens petrified botanicals mastodon tusks freaks of nature" and other oddities. "Interspersed at random were items that reveal the true purpose of the museum i.e. to provide a somewhat distorted view of sex and sex disorders and to advertise the professional services of the Drs. Davieson whose offices were conveniently located upstairs over the museum." An 1878 advertisement in the St. Louis Globe-Democrat states that the Daviesons specialized in "the treatment of nervous and chronic diseases especially those arising from youthful follies or indiscretions." This booklet would have helped market their' business to German immigrants who accounted for more than half the population of St. Louis in 1880. One copy located in OCLC. . unknown
