Dole. Very good. 8.5" x 5.75" 32 pp with folded Map of Wisconsin 12.25" x 11"; Prepared for the Stated Board of Emigration by L.A. Lapham Milwaukee 1867 at rear. Disbound from a larger volume but with original wrappers present map has some uneven toning 1/3 of rear wrapper lacking but still a very good copy overall. Scarce first edition of this pamphlet which was reissued several times and in several languages. According to the Wisconsin Historical Society website "Wisconsin government officials tried to encourage settlers to come to the state several times in the nineteenth century. They employed a commissioner or a formal board of immigration during the years 1852-1855 1867-1887 and 1895-1901. In 1867 Gov. Lucius Fairchild persuaded Milwaukee author Increase Lapham to write this pamphlet to be distributed to prospective immigrants in the eastern states and in Europe. Over the next several years translations and revised editions appeared in German Norwegian French Dutch Swedish and Welsh." Includes sections on rivers and water power climate and health geology and mineral resources agriculture common occupations of residents railroads markets land values and homestead laws schools libraries and more. ‎* The Reformed Church of Tappan in Tappan, Rockland County, New York (formed, 1694) is a historic church. It is a contributing property to the Tappan Historic District. Its first structure built 1716 (worshipers met in homes before this), was used in 1780 for the trial of British Major John André, who conspired with Benedict Arnold to buy the plans for the fortifications at West Point for the British and of Joshua Hett Smith, tried for and acquitted of treason. The church was used in 1778 after the Baylor Massacre as a prison/hospital. The current building on the site dates from 1835. The building is designed according to the Federal style and was inspired by the Cedar Street Presbyterian Church in Manhattan. It has box pews to help keep in warmth from little foot stoves brought by worshipers in winter. In its cemetery are buried original settlers of county, early ministers of church, and American Revolutionary War soldiers. Some stones are inscribed in Dutch; there is a marker at this site.‎

‎New York: Great American Tea Company 1886. Near fine. Original chromolithograph advertising poster 22 x 32 inches. A stunning print with exceptionally rich color archivally backed. Professional restoration to edges and a few small spots on the printed area. Near fine. "Ten minutes for refreshments!" was the well-known cry of railroad conductors across the United States before dining cars became common on trains. Hungry and thirsty passengers would rush off the train and into the depot where they scrambled to order and then bolt down their lunch under the watchful eye of conductor determined to keep the train on schedule. In this advertising print for the Great American Tea Company the conductor stands in the doorway with pocket watch in hand calming observing the chaos as customers all white men served by Black waiters frantically consume their food and beverages some leaving smashed crockery in their wake as they rush to re-board the train. Coffee is dispensed from urns advertising the company's Sultana Coffee and its baking powder and a giant sign on the wall reads "The Teas & Coffee used in this establishment are from the Great American Tea Co." Founded in New York City in 1859 the Great American Tea Company made its name using a direct-to-consumer sales approach that enabled them to offer quality tea at lower prices than found in retail shops. After a period of success selling mail-order to clubs they began opening their own storefronts which were sumptuously decorated in a Chinese-inspired style. In 1870 the company was renamed The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company better known today as A&P in honor of the newly completed transcontinental railroad but retained the Great American Tea Company name on its products thus the appearance of the older name in this 1886 print. The company was a major force in American advertising in the late 19th century using periodicals circulars trade cards and premiums to spread their name. This scarce poster is one of the finest examples of their effective and popular campaigns. Great American Tea Company unknown‎

It was prepared on 23 September 1944 to be used on islands where the Americans land from D-Day to D plus 5. The back text is in English and warns the Filipinos to stay away from Japanese military objectives and ends with: "Remember: Planes bombs and shells cannot tell a friend from a foe." 6. Propaganda Leaflet 3-J-1 - Island Hopping.1944. 8.25" x 5.25". Army Psychological Warfare Branch leaflet 3-J-1 seems to be the first in a series of leaflets that depicts Japanese soldiers left behind as General MacArthur advanced using his "Island-Hopping" campaign. Other similar leaflets depicted a lone Japanese soldier standing on an island 6-J-1 or a lone Japanese soldier watching a battle take place on a nearby island 22-J-1. These leaflets all had the basic same message. You are cut off and there will be no resupply. There will be no food no water no ammunition and no reinforcements. Some of the text on this leaflet is: "Before you reach this miserable state which is more than men ought to endure so far from home we want you to keep something in mind. Those who choose to come to an honorable understanding with us will find that we treat them as human beings not as enemies. We shall hold it a duty to see that they gave clothing food shelter and medical care." This leaflet does not ask the Japanese soldier to surrender. To save face it simply asks that he reach an "honorable understanding" with the Americans. 7. Propaganda Leaflet 1bJ1 - I Surrender.1944. 9.5" x 13" Leaflet with English text on front and Japanese text on reverse. Some of the message is: "Officers and Soldiers of Japan The battle you have put up has our sincere respect. We are quite confident however that victory will be ours as in past operations. We have this confidence because of our officers and men our superior scientific equipment our artillery and our bombing. When you left home many thousands of miles away you thought the Japanese would win. You have since learned that your planes and equipment are no match for those of the Allied forces. Through the operations of our Air Force and navy air and sea supremacy on the Pacific south of Taiwan belongs to us. Because of this it is impossible to move raw materials of military importance from the South Seas to Japan. Therefore what is needed on the front line is lacking. For the same reason the very moving of supplies to the front line is difficult. We take it for granted therefore that you know you have no hope of winning. It is clear that your plight is not your fault but the fault of the army and navy staffs. With the battle hopeless what can you do You can come to an understanding with our forces and preserve yourself for the rebuilding of Japan. That was what Japanese officers and men on Guadalcanal and New Guinea did. They realized the futility of bloodshed and came to an understanding with us for the sake of their country after the war…."
