Best considered binding copy worn and somewhat shabby but complete all three volumes ex-library typically marked/stamped exhibiting detached leaves and gatherings. Text blocks somewhat age-toned with a few ragged fore-edges. Published 1912-13. I 514 II 515-1013 III 1014-1452 pp. Could likely be rescued by trimming edges and rebinding though the binding edges of certain early and late leaves may be too brittle to allow that. Chipped spine extremities show mild loss otherwise only modest shelf wear. vii206 pp. with family tree chart opposite p. 1 b&w plates folding family chart at p. 161 including a large family gathering photographic plate opposite p. 93. A few minor internal soil marks generally clean and intact with firm binding. Both pastedowns slightly discolored due to binding glue reacting to the paper. On pp. 188-189 is a biographical sketch of the Hon. Edward Dickinson 1803-1874 the father of Emily Dickinson whose poetical works were at the time of publication still shrouded in obscurity -- though as she was still living at the time it is conceivable that despite her reclusiveness she attended this reunion and some earnest researchers have contended she may be among the assembled in the collective family portrait opposite p. 93. Laid in at rear is a one-page miniature advertising broadside from Charles M. Interesting criticism of an attitude prevalent in certain British publications at the time that the British felt kindly toward Americans while Yanks displayed only hostility toward the British. To refute this Dickson quotes numerous derogatory comments that appeared in Blackwood's Magazine during the Civil War and The Spectator in the 1890s. She was a native of Augusta Georgia the "Garden City of the South " so named by Dillon and a description still in use today by the city whose homes and gardens figure prominently in this volume. Green cloth covers lightly shelfworn soiled ; front color photo intact; gilt lettering shows only very mild color loss. Contents tight but foxed mostly at endpapers. Hinges sound uncracked. 201 pages with index many interesting photos of Southern gardens and homes.
