‎MEDICAL MANUSCRIPT ACCOUNT BOOK Ledger - Dr. Peter Fahrney‎

‎Hardcover. Tan smooth calf morocco boards. Good in custom matching slipcase good. 37 x 17 cm. 119 linen-backed leaves of manuscript notations and paste down documents. Peter Fahrney 1840-1905 president and founder of Fahrney & Sons Co. was born in Maryland to a family of herbal practitioners. His grandfather known as Ole Dr. Peter Fahrney was well known in the Boonsboro area of Maryland and his office has been preserved to this day. Peter Fahrney grew up in Pennsylvania and attended Jefferson Medical College and the Philadelphia School of Pharmacy. He began practicing medicine in Pennsylvania in 1861 at the age of twenty-one. During the Civil War Fahrney left Pennsylvania and moved to Chicago. His practice grew from general practice to the manufacturing of natural remedies which were sold nationwide. His factory burned down in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 but he was back in business within days. The Fahrney & Sons Company and his uncle Daniel manufactured similar products under Dr. Daniel Fahrney & Son. The ledger is most likely Fahrney's first: it begins in his first year of practice and in addition to patient accounting records includes costs of building his office digging the foundation laboratory supplies etc. An original order form for Dr. Fahrney's blood vitalizer is included. Many patients are listed. Included in the front of the ledger and stapled to the frond endpaper are three notarized statements authenticating the ledger. The first is by Edward J. Ryan of Cook County Illinois a former employee of Dr. Fahrney swearing to the authenticity of the ledger and confirming the handwriting found within is that of the doctor. A statement of John E. Burget confirms the validity of 21 of the persons named in the ledger with notes added: John W. Brumbaugh - My Grandfather; George W. Brumbaugh - My Mother's Uncle; John Dilling - Farmer; Dr. John Wengert - Drugs; Samuel Grabill - Merchant; David Wineland - Black smith; J.C. Sanders - Druggist; Daniel M. Holsinger - Minister; and several more. An affidavit of Christie Meyers a former patient and friend of the doctor confirms that Fahrney had a practice in Fredericksburg PA. Bound in custom later smooth calf morrocco boards gilt-lettered spine with raised spine bands with a custom matching slipcase lightly rubbed. Pages are tanned with dampstaining and spotting throughout.

hardcover books‎

‎Falconer, Thomas; Bollaert, William‎

‎Notes of a Journey through Texas and New Mexico in the Years 1841 and 1842 and Notes on the Coast Region of the Texan Territory: Taken During a Visit in 1842‎

‎London: Royal Geographical Society 1843. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. First appearance of two important articles on Texas extracted from Volume XIII Part 2 of the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society. 8vo pp 199-226 and 226-244 bound in recent quarter cloth and marbled boards. Fine. Falconer's Journey through Texas and New Mexico pp. 199-226 describes his travels from Galveston to San Antonio and then to Austin in 1841. This is followed by his account of the Texas Santa Fe Expedition which according to Streeter 1496 referencing the 1843 offprint of Falconer's article differs somewhat from the account he published in New Orleans in 1842. In the last four pages Falconer argues that Texas was not part of Louisiana when it was ceded by Spain to France. In Notes on the Coast Region of the Texas Territory Bollaert -- an English chemist geographer and ethnologist -- offers observations on the winds affecting the coastal geography of Texas discusses the errors present in many of the maps and charts of the coast and reports on what he saw during several excursions made from Galveston and Houston between April and June 1842. On one excursion noting good pastures and an abundance of fish and wild game he comments: "I could hardly help imagining when standing on this primeval land--not a dwelling yet to be seen--that the shores of these bays would in time be crowded with habitations; that these waters would afford the easy means of conveyance for the products of these countries to other lands and in return import from other realms." He also comments on existing settlements the native tribes river trade agriculture and natural resources and includes statistics on exports and imports at the Port of Galveston. To the best of our knowledge Bollaert's interesting article has never been reprinted. Royal Geographical Society hardcover‎

‎Family Archive.‎

‎Letters and Documents of the Butcher Family Recording some Family History.‎

‎
Small family archive of letters 10 pieces in all some folio size other basic letter sheet size over 20 pages of text some docketed on reverse. Most pages are aged and browned some chips and tears a few holes at center folds a little staining but otherwise about very good. This family archive begins with a letter dated June 14 1840 and provides a glimpse of life in still early America during the pioneer period. In the first letter which is. from near Danville Missouri daughter Emily Lee and Adam Lee to father Ely Butcher in Randolph Virginia asking for money. Emily complains about poor health but tells him to consider moving out there where good land could be had. Another letter dated September 24 1840 is from Rock Island County Illinois from John H. Butcher to his father Ely in Randolph Virginia. John Butcher a farmer tells his father he is in "tolerable good health" but talks about some hard times where he lives. He comments on the rivers being very low and it appears his shipping costs were double what they should be. He stays he finds times very hard in this country harder than expected and adds he couldn’t get $1000 for his home at that time. He even makes a comment about a split in government but that the Whigs may feel they won writing not totally clear on this comment. On January 2 1842 from Danville Missouri we see another letter from Emily Lee to her father Ely Butcher in Randolph Virginia. This letter has a sad tone as Emily complains she hasn’t gotten a letter from her father in almost two years despite writing to him a few times. She says she feels neglected by her father and brothers and times are very hard. She mentions store credit is not available and they lost a horse. According to Emily her in-laws are no help and she has eight children to take care of. She tells her father she will see him in the spring and she expects him to do something about her situation. Seems like Ely’s kids are often in need and asking dad for help. On August 20 1844 John Butcher In Rock Island Illinois to Ely Butcher in Beverly Randolph County Virginia appears to be visited by his sister and his brother-in-law and sister Adam Lee and Emily lee. The farm is doing well and he indicates that oat and corn prices are "tolerable" and he expects to produce 800 bushes of corn and wheat. It appears his sister wants a divorce and it also appears John asks his father to intercede with his uncle Peyton about the land he uses. He seems to be tired of being a renter. He asks his father to negotiate a deal and help him pay for it. He apologizes for the tone of the letter but sounds a little desperate. There are also what appears to be some detailed receipts for the goods of Ely Butcher the dates appear to be 1842 and 1843. In fourth receipt the date is unclear but could be as late as 1866. A final document is a marriage certificate for Hannah Hart Butcher and the date is November 22 1911.
books‎
