Parsons (1844-1920) and Lyman W. Atwater (1835-1891) representing two different views of the Port of New York. They were published by Currier and Ives, who used to call themselves the "Printmakers to the People". Founded in 1834, they produced high-quality lithographs until the business closed in 1907: hundreds of images that chronicled the growth of the United States. These stunning bird's-eye views show typical boats and ships of the late 19th century veering in and around Staten Island, Governor's Island, part of Brooklyn, New Jersey and Manhattan, and include several points of interest. At the center of the first view is Castle Garden, originally an island and cultural hub with a world famous theater. The view of the Port is titled "Bird's eye from the Battery". Prima edizione First edition first printing. <em>Born in New York City's Harlem neighborhood in 1919 Roy DeCarava came of age during the <strong>Harlem Renaissance</strong> when artistic activity and achievement among African Americans flourished across the literary musical dramatic and visual arts. DeCarava did not take up photography until the late 1940s after working in painting and making prints for the posters division of the Works Progress Administration WPA. He used his camera to produce striking studies of everyday black life in Harlem capturing the varied textures of the neighborhood and the creative efflorescence of the Harlem Renaissance. Resisting explicit politicization DeCarava used photography to counter what he described as “black people.not being portrayed in a serious and artistic way.”</em><br /><em>DeCarava moved fluidly across subjects. In his series The Sound I Saw begun in 1956 exhibited at The Studio Museum in Harlem in 1983 and published as a book in 2001 he not only chronicled New York jazz luminaries like Duke Ellington Billie Holliday and John Coltrane but also captured their influence on visual culture. The deeply personal style of his portraits evinces his sympathy for his subjects. DeCarava non iniziò a fotografare fino alla fine degli anni '40 dopo essersi avvicinato alla pittura e realizzato stampe per la divisione poster della Works Progress Administration WPA. Cominciò" ad utilizzare la sua macchina fotografica per produrre sorprendenti studi sulla vita quotidiana ad Harlem catturando le varie trame del quartiere e l'efflorescenza creativa del Rinascimento di Harlem. </em><br /><em>DeCarava si muoveva fluidamente tra i soggetti. Nella sua serie The Sound I Saw iniziata nel 1956 esposta al The Studio Museum di Harlem nel 1983 e pubblicata come libro nel 2001 non solo ha raccontato le stelle del jazz di New York come Duke Ellington Billie Holliday e John Coltrane ma ha anche catturato la loro influenza sulla cultura visiva.
