New York 1920. First Edition. Gelatin silver print measuring 8 x 10 inches. Some editorial marks to verso very good contrast very good overall. Very Good. The Dunbar Apartments were one of the first developments built for African-Americans in a period in which there was a shortage of housing in Harlem. John D. Rockefeller Jr. funded the project which was completed in 1926-1928. Offered here is an uncommon period press photograph of the project dating from the period of the project’s completion in the late 1920s. The verso reads “ Dunbar Apts / New Rockefeller Apts / 149th 7th Ave.†A wooden cart and some original signage is visible on the surrounding streets. unknown

FAMILY FEUD OVER STILLWATER NEW YORK LUMBER AND COAL BUSINESS
An archive of photographs ledgers canceled checks legal documents and other business and personal records from a Stillwater New York family who feuded over the disposition of a lumber and coal business at the turn of the last century. The troubles began following the death in 1898 of Stephen Wood Sr. the owner of Stephen Woods Sons Lumber and Coal in Stillwater New York. The business continued on under the direction of his two sons Stephen and Edward who were named executors of the estate. Two daughters were not included in the settlement. The sons cared for their widower mother Temmy but there was no formal settlement of the estate. When Edward who took care of the books died in 1908 matters became complicated and the family found itself in court because Edward's wife Louise C. Wood asked for a settlement of his portion of the estate. Temmy then sued saying she was owed a third of the estate which was also indebted to her for $6000 in personal loans. This legal dispute went on for several years during which Stephen Jr. died on February 14 1911 followed not long after by his mother Temmy who died in 1912. After Stephen Jr.'s death the remaining heirs settled the dispute with Louise paying her $1500. When Temmy died her estate was left to her granddaughters who signed their inheritance rights over to their mother. Among the court documents is a final settlement of the estate legal fees which were paid in 1917. In a typed letter dated November 8 1911 Emma Wood the daughter of Temmy Wood expressed the concern and frustrations she and her sister Kate felt over the legal troubles. "I understood Kate to say this morning that she does not want to have anything to do with it but that whatever you decide upon will be her decision also. I am in too nervous a state to discuss matters verbally with you so think best to write what I feel the honest thing to be done." Much of the material in this collection appears to be related to the request to settle the estate and therefore provides a detailed overview of the operations of the business along with the family's personal holdings and business dealings. Among the materials included are a handwritten bills ledger receipts legal documents family wills household notebooks and a photographic album. unknown

Artist's Sketchbook of the Catskill Mountains in New York
1883. Hardcover. Very Good. Mottled blue cloth black calf backstrip; oblong 175 x 127; contains 18 pencil drawings most of them titled and dated. It includes landscapes of the Catskill Mountains; studies of clouds waterfalls and tree and rock formations; a farm scene; "The great whist game" image of 4 men at a table playing cards; "Prairie Fire in Dakota Night" the artist was very well-traveled; and 5 portraits. Spine tips chipped; edges of boards lightly scuffed; a few leaves neatly excised; one leaf loose laid-in. Nicely acccomplished works most of them on one side of the leaf therefore removable and suitable for display. <br/><br/>Harley DeWitt Nichols 1859-1939 was born in Barton Wisconsin. He began his education in art as early as 11 years of age. His first job putting his talent and training to use came in the form of an apprenticeship with the Milwaukee firm Marr & Richards where he stayed for 3 years drawing and engraving on wood. The subsequent years included many moves from Milwaukee to Chicago and later to New York where he studied at ASL and was encouraged by Professor Packard to pursue a career as an illustrator at a European school. Nichols left for Munich in October 1885 to attend the Royal Academy where he studied under Heckel became a member of the American Club and socialized with Carl von Marr the clubs president. He went to London for a little while and worked as an illustrator. By 1893 hed returned to New York working mostly in advertising and illustrating for Harpers Weekly and Century magazines. He helped organize the New York Water Color Club. Nichols didnt curb his parapatetic lifestyle until he moved to Laguna Beach California in 1894. The art community in Los Angeles was in its infancy but he got a teaching job at the Echo Mountain summer school and he was inspired by the scenery of Yosemite Monterey San Juan Capistrano and other locations in southern California. He stayed in Laguna Beach until his death in 1939. hardcover

Scarce Civil War era pamphlet on the militia law of 1862 during the period in which both northern and southern states had to rely on States' militias to meet their troop requirements.<br /> <br /> At the beginning of the War neither North or South was adequately prepared for war; the total peacetime army consisted of only 16000 men. President Lincoln following the taking of Fort Sumter had to call up 75000 militia men. New York's share of this total was seventeen regiments of 780 men each or 13280 men. <br /> <br /> There was also a shortage of weapons uniforms and trained officers. The States' militia regiments were of uneven quality and none had any combat training. Militia drilling consisted mostly of parade ground marching and the individual units had never drilled together as part of a larger regiment. <br /> <br /> The pamphlet includes an act to provide for the enrollment of the militia.; military forms and instructions Index and "An Act to Enforce the Laws and Preserve Order passed 1845". 8vo 110pp forms.<br /> <br /> Original yellow printed paper wrappers stitch binding. Cooper with the kind regards of Catherine Gansevoort Lansing Albany N.Y. Dec. 1877". Lansing was Henry Gansevoort's sister.<br /> <br /> Gansevoort was a decorated soldier who served in battle during the Civil War. He served briefly as Private in the 7th NY Militia in Washington DC but soon obtained a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th US Artillery. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in March 1862 and served with his battery on the Peninsula and at Second Manassass. He was on the Maryland Campaign and saw action at Antietam.<br /> <br /> This biography is complemented with extracts from his letters to home which add much detail to the description of each battle many of the extracts chosen by his sister.<br /> <br /> 4to 335pp. Bound in full red morocco gilt inner dentelles marbled endpapers gilt decorated spine beveled edges aeg. The card touts Hill Brothers' "Fantasma" fashion hat one of the most popular "Shapes of the Season." The card invites potential buyers to see their full lines of samples in all braids and colors at their Branch Offices and Sample Salesrooms in New Orleans St. Louis New York and Paris. Described is their expertise in filling orders for Millinery Goods. Brief information about Hill's Milliners' Gazette a monthly periodical that is free to their customers. Colorfully designed die-cut 8" x 6" butterfly as a string-tied promotional sales catalog folds to 4" x 3" n. p. 12 pp. illustrated in black & white. This delightfully printed promotional catalogue for the millinery department at Hugh O’Neill’s Dry Goods Store whose impressive building at Sixth Ave. & 21st St. was an impressive domed building now serving as condominiums. Noted for their inventive marketing catalogs and souvenir chromolithograph cards this one illustrates the many Victorian trimmed hats which could be purchased "at the lowest possible price" including: Bo Peep Misses Capulet Easter Hedrick Ormonde & Bon Ton bonnets as well as Virot Gypsy Queen and Reckless hats. Founded in 1870 the Irish-American O'Neill d. 1902 opened his distinctive store designed by Mortimer Merritt in 1887 and by 1892 employed 2500 people and added a fifth floor to his store. After his death the O'Neill store later merged with Adams Dry Goods and closed down in 1907. <p>America. Late 19th century. Full leather photo album with 67 cabinet card photographs. 10½ x 14 inches. Six photos have scuffing and wear and there is scattered light foxing. Overall images are in very good to fine condition.</p> <p>Cornell University class photograph album owned by Walter Douglas Young 1870-1945 with his portrait and his classmates. Young was born in 1870 in Aurora New York. After graduating from Cornell he worked as an electrical engineer for the B&O Railroad and was president of The Electromechanical Company in Baltimore. His was in the Maryland National Guard signal corps and coast artillery. In the First World War he was a major in the Engineer Corps US Army. Young died in Maryland in 1945.</p> <p>Many of Young’s classmates at Cornell were in fraternities. They autographed their class photographs giving them to Young. They are:</p> <p>Juan A. Almirall 1891; Raymond Almirall 1891 architect; Leonard Thurlow Beecher 1889 co-founder of Cornell’s Chi Psi chapter; Ethelbert W. Brown an American painter from Arizona who studied with Whistler and exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Pan-Am. Exposition in Buffalo; Albert S. Crane 1891; W.E. G___ Jr. 1894; F.M. Farwell 1891; Charles P. Knowles 1891 Pennsylvania railroad surgeon; George Milik Mashek; Voyta F. Mashek 1889; George McAlpine 1891; Harry C. Palmer; Charles W. Rassler 1889; Charles Goodwin Sands 1890 the Charles Goodwin Sands Memorial Medal is named after Sands; Claude R. Scott 1889 co-founder of Cornell’s Chi Psi chapter and “instrumental in securing for this successful fraternity the Flake-McGraw mansion in Ithaca for the chapter houseâ€; Floyd M. Shoemaker 1888; Zalmon G. Simmons 1888; Milton Smith 1887; John B. Van Cleft 1889 of Norwich New York; Louis E. White; and a Sidney A. ____ 1895 Eleven additional student portraits are not identified. </p> <p>There are also: 2 photographs that show two men likely Young’s classmates costumed in minstrel apparel: one man holds a tennis racked and has a model toy house attached to his costume the other man has a sword and pistol both have nose and ear-rings and stand over a guitar case. The other image shows two students dressed as Confederate Civil War officers. </p> <p>Additionally there are five photographs of young women alone and in groups one group costumed; six images of Young’s future wife Alice Gertrude Eldred 1870–1953; 6 stunning photographs of floral arrangements likely from their wedding; 16 images of unidentified individuals that were photograph in Auburn Aurora and Seneca Falls New York.</p> unknown

Small Collection of Documents and Maps Promoting Japanese Investment in New York City Following World War I
Japan 1924. Very good. Four broadside documents two maps and a stamped envelope. Folded for postal delivery minor overall wear and some toning a few small areas of insect damage. A small but notable collection of documents and maps documenting the New York region in the early-1920s. The two folding maps depict New York with one in color and the other being a reprint of a map from the New York American of Sunday January 22 1922 showing the NYC area marked with concentric circles representing increasing land values. The text around the map promotes a very positive view of the real estate market in the New York area. The four broadside documents are essentially leaflets reprinting various New York Times and other articles each measuring around 20 x 7 inches and printed all in Japanese. These broadsides encourage potential Japanese investment in a syndicate promoting urban redevelopment in New York and its surroundings report on the New York Port Authority business opportunities in NYC and more.<br /> <br /> The material was produced by the New York Land and Building Company one of a number of schemes created in Japan during or immediately following the First World War promoting speculation in relatively risky investment schemes. The NYLBC was founded by Japanese real estate speculator Okamoto Yonezo and was a fascinating precursor to later Japanese overseas investment and emigration efforts. The present documents and maps provide important insights into the economic and social relations between Japan and the United States on the eve of the 1924 Exclusion Act. unknown

Goshen N.Y: Charles Mead & Son 1866. Softcover. Very good. Pamphlet 5 1/2" 8 1/2" stitched as issued. 23pp. Original salmon-colored wrappers with printing on front wrapper. This pamphlet contains the by-laws of the Orange County Medical Society along with a code of ethics for its members including agreed minimum charges for certain procedures. It also contains a section of over 8 pages entitled "Laws of the State of New York Relative to the Medical Profession". An interesting and scarce summary of the regulatory environment for physicians in the mid 19th century. Worldcat can find no US library holdings for this title. Contemporary owner's signature "Dr. G. Sears" at the top of front wrapper with a correction in ink on page 7. Light soiling to wrappers. Otherwise a good or better copy. Charles Mead & Son paperback

New York 1910. First Edition. Album containing ten 6 x 8 inch photographs. Photographs near fine with one showing some foxing some normal wear to album very good or better. A collection of ten images of the Bushwick Hospital which was located at 41 Howard Ave. in Brooklyn taken shortly after the building’s construction in 1912. The photographs show the grounds the nurse and doctor staff a picture of surgery being performed a section of beds in a recovery ward a group of newborn babies and the ambulances. The hospital was located in the Bedford-Stuyvesant / Ocean Hill neighborhood and the building now houses the Ella McQueen Reception Center for Boys and Girls. unknown
