‎Proceedings of the Thirtieth Annual Session of the National Negro Insurance Association‎

‎Los Angeles 1950. Good plus. 198pp. plus a folding panoramic photographic plate. Original green printed wrappers. Wrappers lightly soiled worn and detached with about a fourth of the spine perished. Minor thumb-soiling to first several leaves but otherwise clean. A rare edition of the annual meeting minutes and other proceedings of the National Negro Insurance Association for the year 1950 when the annual meeting was held July 18-21 in Los Angeles California. The work contains portraits of the officers of the association lists of officers and committees rolls of member companies and convention attendees and more. The preponderance of the work is comprised of a detailed record of the convention proceedings including the reports addresses and more presented in General Sessions Executive Seminars and an "Agency Institute." The panoramic photographic plate pictures the attendees of the convention and is described in the table of contents as "Group Picture of Convention in Los Angeles." OCLC records a smattering of issues at several institutions but very few record holdings for the present year. unknown‎

‎San Diego 1966. Good. 16pp. Oblong quarto. Original pictorial self wrappers stapled. Printed entirely in blue ink. Some staining and wrinkling to covers waterstain and minor chipping at bottom of gutter throughout occasionally affecting a few words. A seemingly unrecorded and ephemeral souvenir program published to coincide with the dedication ceremonies for the Refuge Church of God of the Apostolic Faith in San Diego California. The work contains a biography of the pastor Bishop John Harry Cannon along with portraits of him and his large family as well as a couple dozen photographs of fellow parishioners and the church itself. The final six pages of the work are comprised of advertisements for local businesses including gas stations auto shops a record store laundry services markets and more. The proposed date for the program comes from an ad for Ed Taylor Chevrolet who offers a 1966 Impala for the low low price of $2566. We could locate no copies of this informative program from an African-American church in San Diego in OCLC or elsewhere. unknown‎

Illus. stiff wraps. 1406</p><p><i>The Kentucky-born Los Angeleno author's debut short story collection including "The Price of Dirt" "The Way of Shadows" "In the Dark" "Waiting for Mongo" and "Roman Times" which won the Gwendolyn Brooks Literary Award in 1972. In his preface to the work Jones explains that "most of the stories in this collection employ modern literary techniques as diverse as impressionism and surrealism and especially important is the experimental synthesis of fantasy/realism. Myths and mythical notions for example are sometimes utilized in a campy fashion. Black field hand dialect might end up in the mouths of the most educated aristocrats. Nevertheless all of this is not only plausible and appropriate to the situation but also creates effects which are organically natural to the stories in this book. THE PRICE OF DIRT is the collected stories of a people's reactions to a fantastic world designed to exclude them and their reality." ‎West Coast African-American Vernacular Family Photograph Album with Manuscript Index of Photos‎

‎Various locations 1955. Very good. 9 leaves illustrated with twenty-nine photographs various sizes between 3 x 2 inches and 9.5 x 7.5 inches with a manuscript index at front identifying the subjects. Later blue-green limp vinyl album with self adhesive pages. Minor wear and soiling. Photographs in generally nice condition. An interesting family photograph album assembled by a later-20th-century descendant of an African-American family with ties to Howard University Alcorn College and the West Coast. The photographs are mostly studio portraits of various kinds sepia-toned black-and-white hand-tinted featuring distinguished African-American men women and children. The photographs are arranged in number order and keyed to a handwritten list at the front of the album identifying each subject and occasionally including brief additional information about some of them. Most of the photographs also have a date written near them on each album page. The photographs seem to center on two woman probably sisters named Olga Williams Roby and Alma Williams Greene; the album includes two photos of Olga and multiple images of Alma and there are photographs inscribed to each of the women here. Olga apparently lived on the West Coast as the earlier of her two photographs is noted in California and the later in Seattle in 1940. One of Alma's photographs features her while at Alcorn College. There are also multiple images of Dr. Clifton Nelson one at Howard University. Four of the photographs are noted as emanating from the various subjects' time at Alcorn College now Alcorn State University in Mississippi. This combined with a final page of photographs featuring family friends one of which pictures a house in Greenwood Mississippi indicates the larger family probably emanated from Mississippi. The fact that several of the subjects attended college combined with Olga's life on the West Coast indicates at least part of this family participated in the Great Migration. unknown‎

The 416 photographs document the racers race cars speedways including the legendary and treacherous Legion Ascot Speedway in Los Angeles as well as custom and hot rod car culture car building and restoration and even includes a scale model built by Gene Sherman of the famed So-Cal Speed Shop streamliner which blew away the competition at the first Bonneville Nationals in 1949.‎

This noteworthy and expansive archive captures the glories of automobile sporting culture in California during the first several decades of the 20th-Century assembled through the effort and passion by several significant figures in the auto-racing and sports car scene of Southern California. These include Gene Sherman 1944-2007 famed auto designer and builder Leigh Peffer 1918-2000 auto racing enthusiast sports car racer and collector and photographer Briggs Cunningham 1907-2003 famed American sportsman whose Cunningham Motors fielded race teams and built race cars for the 24 Hours of Le Mans and later the Briggs Cunningham Automotive Museum in Coasta Mesa CA which operated from 1966-1987 and finally the racing photographs of Ted Wilson famed photographer of California auto racing and race tracks during the 1920’s and 1930’s. Amidst the hundreds of photographs many pieces of ephemera race programs original letters and postcards the joy and energy of the West Coast automobile culture trace the development of automobile manufacturing and racing from the Hodge Brothers electric car manufacturing in Pasadena CA in 1900-1902 through the design and model building and car museums in the 1980’s. Peffer & Sherman sorted the photo collection into race car drivers action shots and miscellaneous which includes photographs from Ted Wilson Doinseau-Rapho Briggs Cunningham Museum Strother MacMinn Thomas Milana Studebaker Ford D.M. Woodhouse of San Diego as well as Peffer and Sherman themselves. The photographs include those of Carroll Shelby driving one of his early Cobra prototypes Rex Mays Dan DePaolao Stubby Stubelfield Bill Schuffler Johnny Parsons Bill Stepp Earl Mansell and Louis Meyer Jr. “Sonny†one of the most successful and accomplished engine builders in Indianapolis 500 history. Still others include veterans of the vaunted Legion Ascot race track in Los Angeles known as the “Killer Track†with such drivers as Howard Wilcox II Jimmie Miller Lon Webb the Robson Bros. Spider Webb Bud Rose Harris Insinger in the Miller Special Gus Schrader Roland Frost Babe Stapp in his Cragar Special April 2 1933 Tony Radeitch Woestman McDowell & Pintorelli. After the Legion Ascot became too dangerous and closed down and AAA racing moved out of the West Coast the dirt track and gritty midget cars moved elsewhere.The Southern Ascot Speedway was a racetrack located at Atlantic and Tweedy Blvd. and ran from 1937 to 1942 now site of the Legacy High School Complex. Other race tracks represented in these photos include the Gilmore Stadium Speedway including photos of the open wheel Krause Offy Offenhauser or Jimmy Miller in the pits in the Scheffler Offenhauser special at Oakland Speedway or Bill Reed and Spud Hinkley at the San Jose Speedway. The Oakland Speedway was in San Leandro CA and was a banked dirt oval built in 1931 operated through the Great Depression and featured roadster motorcycle Big Car Stock Car Midget Car races and was the “fastest dirt track in the Nation.†Another historic race track capturing racers and races was the Mines Field race track including Stubby Stubblefield in 1934 today the site lies under LAX airport. Amidst the hundreds of photos are images of the concept car U.S. Discovery speed model designed by Marshall Space Flight Center Boeing Rockwell Lockheed and Cobalt Boats engines such as the Miller-Ford Motor Ford Motor & Front End Bentleys along with a myriad of photos of famed race cars and spots cars. These automobiles include the Studebaker No. 34 driven by Tony Gulotta fitted with Stromberg carburetors mechanic Carl Rischingo placing 7th in the Indy 500 in 1934; Miller cars powered with 220 cubic in. motors; Allard Race Cars MG race cars Lester MG in 1994; 1948 MG TC 1937 Jaguar SS Bugatti 57C L.P. Breen’s 1926 Bentley the 1925 Lamda Roadster inscribed by Mark Shuttle to Briggs Cunningham the Spike Jones Special and even Peffer’s own Peerless GT at the start of a Southern California vintage sports car rally. Others capture Bill White’s Red Lion Special No. 1 Al Gordon in the Sparks-Weirick Gilmore Special No. 1 the 1934 Pacific Coast champion in Eddie Winfield’s Winfield Special 1949 Ferrari and Ralph De Palma in his Miler Special after winning the Italian Helmet Dash at the Legion Ascot Speedway in the 1920’s. Peffer’s “Scrap Book of Motor Sports History†opens with photos tickets and ephemera for the Brands Hatch Boxing Day Races Dec. 26 1959 which opened with the 10-lap Yuletide Trophy for sports cars up to 1100 C.C. and for all the races that day featured Threlfall Chapman Hill and Crab in Lotus Eleven’s and Seven’s Baillie in 3.4 Jaguar and others. He’s also included photos of his Little Riley restored in Dehham Engladnd with Cecil Cutton’s famed Bugatti next to him along with photos of the rare and famous MG Tigresse. Of particular interest amidst the many different ALS & TLS sent to both Peffer and Sherman is the lengthy and detailed 3 p. letter ALS sent to Gene Sherman at the Briggs Cunningham Automotive Museum June 26 1968 in which Sara J. Hodge of Solana Beach CA describes and explains the founding of the first and largest automobile garage West of the Mississippi by her father Nathaniel Hodge and uncle Arthur Hodge listed in the 1902 Pasadena City Directory. Later named the Hodge Brothers Co. they produced and sold electric automobiles and she has included four historic copy photographs capturing the Hodge Brothers machine shop & garage factory and even a whole bank of 1902 Hodge Bros. EV cars charging. Another letter to Sherman documents the life of Briggs Cunningham after he had sold his collection and museum contents to his friends the Colliers they moved to Naples FL and explaining how their “house is not finished as yet so I don’t believe we can move in until next year. . . I am busy with packing up the mags etc. ready to move. My new library will be larger tha the present one.†The scale model by Gene Sherman painstakingly recreates the famed So-Cal Speed Shop Streamliner. The car was built after Dean Batchelor a So-Cal Speed Shop customer sold his 1932 roadster to raise the capital and built by famed speed shop builder Alex Xydias who would take the body off the tank and subsequently build the Streamliner. Batchelor felt a small streamliner like the MG EX-135 was the best way to move forward on the design. The completed chassis was taken to Valley Custom in Burbank CA where Neil Emory one of the finest early custom craftsmen began working with aluminum to shape the Streamliner designed as a flattened oval with no compound curves. Early test runs at El Mirage ranged from 135 to 142 mph with a 156ci Flathead Ford and at the first Bonneville Nationals held in 1949 on the salt flats the So-Cal Speed Shop Special in iconic white and gold was the star of the show. In the midst of the runs they switched engines to an Edelbrock-built Mercury Engine and 190 mph. The car also achieved a 210.892 mph average a Class C Record and bagged the Hot Rod Magazine “Top Time†trophy. The next year after rolling in high winds Batchelor escaped serious injury and never raced again. Special note should be made of the Ted Wilson photographs although very little personal biographical information is known of him. He was inducted into the Sprint Car Hall of Fame shot historic racing photos during the 1920’s through 1950’s on California race tracks including Oakland Speedway Alviso Speedway San Jose Speedway at King Road mostly in a 4 x 5 format and was a pioneer in marketing his photos often running ads in racing and motoring periodicals at the time. He began purchasing other negative collections from other photographers and amateurs expanding his collection including Carroll Studio Roy Richer’s the Crest Collection and the Douthat Speed Photo collection. Eventually the entire collection was sold to Bruce Craig and Vincente Alvarez and subsequently to Jeannie Hinnershitz and Dale Snyder partner to the Florida-based Collier family which took the collection private. He maintained ongoing relationships with Leigh Peffer often writing and selling him photos Gene Sherman at the Briggs Cunningham Museum and Briggs himself. Flexible metallic silver covers laurel wreath logo at upper right corner front cover minor shelfwear slight creasing still VG copy from the library of Gene Sherman 1944-2007 famed southern California auto designer and builder renowned metal fabricator automobile restoration specialist worked at the Briggs Cunningham Automobile Museum until it closed and later opened a studio in Huntington Beach CA. First edition of this exceedingly scarce promotional catalogue from Art Sparks whose introduction details the efforts to radically compete with the new-found supremacy of the Lotus-Ford race cars and in conjunction with Douglas Aircraft and Sparks engines design a competitive car. In 1966 the USAC regulations required Indianapolis race cars to feature open-wheel design with maximum width of 75 in. and minimum wheelbase of 96 in. and 4.2 litre engines with 2.8 litre superchargers. The legendary innovator applied his famed ForgedTrue pistons which when used in other engines powered 11 consecutive Indianapolis 500 race winners. Sparks 1901-1987 was a pioneering silent movie and talkie professional driver stuntman including Howard Hughes’ epic Hells Angels raced on outlaw dirt tracks and began competing with Stubby Stubblefield Bill Cummins and Rex Mays on West Coast Tracks. He designed Stubby’s “The Catfish†aerodynamic race car which placed 6th in the 1932 Indy 500 and later began working with Thorne Engineering to develop George Robson’s 1946 Indy 500 winner. Encouraged by the Civil Aeronautics Authority in 1938 many communities began preparing aviation master plans in order to begin building enough airports and facilities to encourage further expansion of civil aviation. This master plan incorporated many of the airports already operating in Los Angeles and their possibilities for expansion including Los Angeles Union Air Long Beach Santa Monica Lancaster and others. Of interest is the seaplane terminal which existed in Long Beach at the time and the belief by the report that over 15 feeder airports would be required including smaller airports in Compton Alhambra Lomita South Whittier Gardena Pomona Puente Palmdale Catalina and Monrovia. These magazines include many illustrations and ads for San Diego CA businesses and a number of articles touching on the PBY-1 Catalina aircraft which was one of the most successful flying boats. Of particular interest are the articles detailing the squadron of PBY-1 Catalinas flown by Patrol Squadron 11-F from the Naval Air Station in San Diego on a shakedown flight to Hawaii and then back. The PBY Catalinas proved to be incredibly successful aircraft including long “wet†wings waist gun positions during World War II and very popular with British and Canadian flight crews. Bowlus and Warren Smith the course of instruction photos of the field a Ryan Siemans 9 Cylinder Engine a Curtis Hawk Pursuit Plane the T.C. Octavo: 22 2 p. with 6 black-and-white photographic illustrations and 3 maps: one of Colony Carlos Pacheco Ensenada a map of the United States showing the "Lands of The International Company of Mexico Lower California" and a detailed rendering of Baja California. Original printed blue paper wrappers bound with two staples. The contents are a little toned. The ink signature of B.A. Cecil Stephens a member of the Historical Society of Southern California in the 1890s as well as a principal in a syndicate interested in water flow in the lower Colorado River appears along the top edge of the front panel. Some minor toning and wear along the extremities of the wrappers with a stain to the rear panel; else very good. Barrett 1305 and 1306 although neither is this issue with the "Francis Valentine & Co. Printers San Francisco Cal." imprint at the bottom of the front panel.<br /> <br /> Extols the virtues of Baja California for agriculture mining and manufacturing. Includes statements from persons who have been on the company lands conditions prices and other information for colonists. ‎A splendid panoramic photograph of two semi-pro California baseball teams Standard Oil vs. RPM Motor Oil lined in front of the backstop with fans in the stands behind the two teams a Standard Oil Announcer Service Car up on the hill behind with cars spread along the road.‎

‎N.P. California: Standard Oil of California Sept. 9 1936. Large panoramic photograph 36 x 8.5 in. w/ date noted in lower margin of image very slight creasing in a few spots from when the photo was originally rolled very slight lightening to image at ends still a very sharp crisp photo in contemporary frame old glass with new archival backing. This very scarce panoramic photo provides an excellent historical snapshot of the heyday of Standard Oil Company semi-pro baseball teams in California. Of particular note in this photograph is the presence of the RPM Motor Oil baseball team because 1936 was the year that Standard Oil introduced the brand. To offset the dramatic drop in earnings during the Great Depression Standard Oil pushed heavily researched new products including RPM Motor Oil Standard Gasoline DELO Diesel Engine Lubricating Oil and others. Standard Oil and other large oil companies promoted company-sponsored baseball teams as diversions for oil families to entertain themselves and to incorporate the values of aggressiveness and toughness symbolized by the oil roughnecks. In this photo the RPM team is fielding 15 players in uniform while the opponents Standard Oil are fielding 13 players including one in catcher’s gear.
