A Fine copy. 31 1 pp. The narrative was written by the California author poet Isabel Hammel Raymond who contributed the text to another promotional booklet about Santa Cruz County. Her detailed description of the hotel consists of 15 pages of text. In addition there are four more unattributed pages of text about Santa Cruz and its virtues. 10 b/w captioned half-tone photographic images of primarily divers Santa Cruz scenes. Only one of the illustrations is of the Hotel St. George that an image of the main office. Map p. 32 showing routes from San Francisco to Santa Cruz. Oblong format: 4-3/16" x 6" <br/><br/>The Hotel St. George was built in the 1890s by the San Francisco millionaire A. P. Hotaling a very successful Pacific Coast liquor distributor. Stretching along one full block of downtown Santa Cruz it was regarded as the best accommodation along the coast between San Francisco and Monterey. As it changed hands over the years additions were added and renovations took place. As Santa Cruz’s coastal amusement tourist attractions were developed the hotel played a major role in keeping the city’s downtown area viable. The hotel existed well into the 20th C finally destroyed by fire in 1990. J. C. C. Leonard named as the lessee on the booklet's cover was involved with the hotel for many years before and after the turn of the 20th C. He is named in a 1905 lawsuit as being associated with the hotel as early as 1898. He was listed as the lessee as late as 1914. At the time of this publication Leonard was also the proprietor of the Sea Beach Hotel shown in one of the photo illustrations. OCLC records 2 holding institutions: UC Berkeley & UC Santa Cruz. New York: Nesbitt and Co. 1861. Illustrated handbill 6 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches sight printed in red blue and black. In fine condition. Matted and framed. A rare and attractive handbill advertising the services of the Andrew Jackson a clipper ship bound for San Francisco in late 1861. This is a large handbill much larger than the typical clipper ship card and has a wonderful image of Andrew Jackson astride his horse with the American flag behind. The illustration of Jackson was drawn by George F. Nesbitt who also printed this handbill. <br> <br> The Andrew Jackson was a 1679 ton medium clipper built in Mystic in 1855. She was a fast sailer but contrary to what the handbill would imply she didn't set any records on any of her passages. At the time of the voyage advertised here December 16 1861 she was helmed by a Captain Johnson. It is interesting that this voyage to California was scheduled at a time when naval action in the Civil War was ramping up: the USS Constitution arrived at Ship Island at the mouth of the Mississippi River carrying the 26th Massachusetts Regiment to New Orleans; Great Britain began its embargo on U.S. exports; and the naval blockade of the Confederate coast was beginning to show results. Despite the turmoil of the war the handbill states that the ship would depart "by Christmas day but certainly on or before the 1st of January." The clipper ship Andrew Jackson was sold to the British in 1863 and was lost in the Gaspar Straits in 1868. A rare survival. Nesbitt and Co. unknown books

Stanley A. Piltz was a California photographer and publisher of Mid-Century Modern graphic design and printed ephemera. Stanley A. Piltz Company San Francisco issued many Linen Type postcards from the 1930s to the 1950s depicting scenes of California especially of the San Francisco Bay Area and the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition. They consisted primarily of scenic views city town civil and military infrastructures and national monuments views. Linen Type postcards were produced on paper with a high rag content which gave the postcard a fabric type look and feel. At the time this was a less expensive process. Along with advances in printing technique linen type cards allowed for very vibrant ink colors. Stanley Piltz pioneered the Linen Type postcards with his "Pictorial Wonderland Art Tone Series". Curt Teich was the most prominent and largest printer and publisher of Linen Type postcards based in Chicago. Stanley Piltz was one of most prominent publisher at the West Coast.
