‎All the Pacific Bank Lands in Madera Co. for Sale. This Valuable Property Practically Given Away caption title‎

‎Madera Ca 1890. Very good. Broadside 16.5 x 9.5 inches. Horizontal fold at center. A few very short closed tears at top edge. Even tanning; a couple of faint fox marks. A scarce broadside advertisement for a land sale north of Fresno during the late 19th century. The Bank of Madera went into liquidation in 1897. Pacific Bank to whom the local bank owed a good deal of money apparently took control of its real estate assets and promoted their fire sale via this illustrated broadside. The advertisement contains a plat map and table of available lots and states that "This land is situated about 2 1/2 miles southwest of the town of Madera is all under irrigation and is as good soil and there is in the County of Madera." Additional text promotes other available lots and emphasizes the low prices for which all are available. The sale was placed in the hands of the local attorney Robert Hargrove who according to a contemporary state report on recent bank failures was also one of the principal shareholders and president of the bank. We locate only one copy of this broadside at Berkeley. unknown books‎

‎Monterey Ca 1900. About very good. Large blueprint map 52.5 x 65 inches. Light wear and occasional creasing. Several closed tear repaired on verso. Right edge trimmed slightly affecting image and text. A rare and giant cadastral map showing new subdivisions east of downtown Monterey in what are now the Del Monte area and the neighboring town of Seaside north of the present-day airport. The map is quite detailed drawn at a scale of 300 feet to the inch and begins in the west at the grounds of the Del Monte Hotel which today is the Naval Postgraduate School. East of the hotel grounds are the newly organized neighborhoods of Live Oaks Park and Del Monte Grove north of the Del Monte Racetrack now the Monterey Fairgrounds. At the very center of the map is the Laguna del Rey and beyond the lagoon are several other extensively plotted areas called "Lake Side Tract" "Vista Del Rey Tract" "East Monterey" "Hot Springs Tract" and "Del Monte Heights" which now make up the town of Seaside. Property inland and to the east of these tracts is surveyed in larger unnamed plots. The map was compiled by Howard D. Severance who became the City Engineer of Monterey in 1906 and was responsible for several similar but smaller maps in the second half of that decade that are located at the Monterey Public Library. We do not locate any copies of the present map in OCLC. unknown books‎

‎Subdivisions One and Two of the Riverside Orange Heights Tract Adjoining Corona California‎

‎Los Angeles 1910. Good plus. Plat map approximately 14 x inches. Folded a couple of short separations and minor losses along or near folds. A few nicks at edges. Light even tanning. Printed on thin paper. Ephemeral real estate map and advertisement for the Riverside Orange Heights Tract located north of Corona in Southern California and owned by the Citrus Belt Land Company. "The land west of the future Norco Hills consisting of 5500 of the former Little La Sierra Rancho was purchased by a company of Los Angeles men led by James W. Long and by April 1909 that same property was on the market in the form of five- ten- and twenty-acre parcels under the 'Riverside Orange Heights.' In 1910 the Riverside Orange Heights Company was again 'sold' to the Citrus Best Land Company with Long and many of the same stakeholders simply moving from the old corporation to the new. The Citrus Belt Land Company undertook an aggressive sales campaign to sell residential ranch parcels strictly as a suburb of Corona with no effort to build schools commercial businesses or manufacturing centers. Newspaper ads appearing in the local papers the Los Angeles Times and as far away as San Diego touted the plentiful and inexpensive water excellent soil and citrus growing opportunities. It was claimed that the land was impervious to flooding and frost and provided a natural shield from the Santa Ana winds -- statements that many future residents would find to be devastatingly untrue" - Bash. The platted area depicted in this map represents today the southern portion of Norco bisected by Interstate 15. A good cartographic and promotional document of real estate development in the country surrounding Los Angeles during the early 20th century. ‎Sacramento 1965. Very good. Large folding map 28 x 32 inches. Very minor wear at a few folds. With original mailing envelope somewhat worn and foxed. A surprisingly scarce map of the construction of Oroville dam and surrounding area in California. The dam is of recent fame for nearly failing in February 2017 when the spillways were on the verge of collapse leading to the evacuation of 188000 people. The map depicts the overall construction plan for the area including the dam itself anticipated reservoir areas tunnels and bridges highway relocations and many other features. The topographical detail of the map is extremely fine. Images 3.5 x 5.75 inches and 3.5 x 4.5 inches. Images crisp and clean mounting leaves a bit rumpled with light wear. Small collection of images documenting the Long Beach Earthquake of May 10 1933. The images mounted to sheets are numbered and captioned in typescript with the heading "Earthquake Damage - Long Beach and Vicinity. March 14 1933". They provide a visual survey of the damage to major sites around Los Angeles and Compton such as the Masonic Temple the Dominguez Sub-station the Security First National Bank in Compton buildings along East Compton Boulevard and several of the local schools. The loose photos all show damage in Long Beach itself including the Seaside Hospital the Catholic Church the Imperial Theatre schools and an image captioned "Feeding refugees at Lincoln Park - Long Beach Cal."

The Long Beach Earthquake occurred just before 6 o'clock in the morning and was a magnitude 6.4 killing more than 100 people. The epicenter was offshore south of Los Angeles with much of the damage limited to Long Beach but also spreading north into southern L.A. It is notable that many of the images here document school buildings as more than 200 schools were damaged in the event. This highlighted a need for earthquake-proof construction in school buildings where the death toll would have been much higher had the earthquake struck during school hours and the legislature passed the Field Act on April 10th as a result. ‎ARCTIC OIL WORKS SAN FRANCISCO. CAL‎

‎1883. Oil on canvas 18 x 26 inches on original wooden stretcher with letters in lower margin after the lithographed view of the same title published by Bosqui. Very good. "Edward Bosqui was born in 1833 in Montreal of French descent. When he was about seventeen years old he decided to go to California. He went by way of Panama where like a good many others who headed for the Gold Rush in those days he became stranded. He worked his way up through Mexico a hazardous trip but young Bosqui survived the many hardships. He arrived in San Francisco in the latter part of 1850 and his first job was as cashier of the first bank to be established there. Afterwards he served as General Fremont's secretary. He first went into the printing business in 1859 at Clay and Leidesdorff Streets and stayed at that location for thirty-nine years. Bosqui did bookbinding as well as printing and lithography. He printed the EVENING BULLETIN in the early days of its existence and did a great deal of commercial label work" - Peters.

The Arctic Oil Works was established on a Bay side pier between 17th and 16th streets in 1883 to produce refined oils from seals whales and elephant seals. Soon after opening it became the largest oil refinery on the West Coast. In 1902 the oil works became incorporated as part of Standard Oil.

The painting is quite similar to the scarce lithographed view produced by Bosqui although more Impressionistic in style and without quite as much detail. The spelling mistakes in the address of the works "Potrcro" instead of Potrero and in the address of the offices "ZB" instead of 28 further suggest this painting to be after the lithographed view. The painting however shows considerable age is on the original stretcher and dates from the late 19th century. PETERS CALIFORNIA ON STONE pp.60-61. J. ‎ART WORK ON SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA‎

‎San Francisco & Chicago: California Photogravure Co. 1900. Twelve parts. 24pp. plus 130 photogravures on 109 leaves. Folio. Original green cloth-backed textured burgundy leatherette wrappers foredges reinforced with same green cloth gilt title on front wrapper. Minor wear to upper or lower edges of a few volumes. Occasional light offsetting to margins images not affected. Bindings very good; plates near fine. A wonderful complete set of the "Art Work" series for Southern California with many striking views from Santa Barbara to San Diego and from the beaches to the Inland Empire. It is a marvelous record of Los Angeles and numerous small communities during an important period in the area's development.

Like many sets in this series the majority of plates depict recently constructed civic buildings such as schools churches hospitals etc. as well as landscaped public spaces and expanding agricultural scenes. Although citrus farming was already a major industry and immigration was booming these scenes show Southern California "before": before the movie industry the freeways etc. Notable in this collection are lovely photogravure images of the State Normal School Los Angeles in 1919 it became the southern branch of the University of California; the College of Liberal Arts building "Old College" at the University of Southern California; the A.K. Smiley Public Library in Redlands; the Los Angeles County Court House the first building built as a courthouse in L.A.; and shots of several streets in and around downtown Los Angeles including tree-lined Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood - then still a dirt road. A brief text authored and signed in facsimile by Lou V. Chapin promotes Southern California as a land happily blending a modern and industrialized region with lush parks and gardens abundant agriculture and long beaches but it's the exquisite images that close the deal.

This set has only appeared once at auction in recent years and is scarce in the trade. OCLC lists seventeen copies the majority held by California institutions. A fantastic visual record of California's "Southland" on the cusp of a boom in growth. OCLC 20876322 13326640. ‎FRESNO COUNTY CAL. FARMS OF 20 OR 40 ACRES FOR SALE IN SOUTH WASHINGTON COLONY. IMPROVED OR UNIMPROVED LAND IN LARGE OR SMALL TRACTS A SPECIALTY‎

‎Fresno Ca.: William Harvey 1890. Tinted map 32 1/4 x 23 1/4 inches. Text on verso. Minor edge wear. Some small neat splits at cross-folds five-inch closed separation along one fold with no loss. Very good. An elaborate and handsome map and promotional for agricultural land in Fresno California. The map was lithographed by the notable San Francisco firm of H.S. Crocker & Company. The map shows several "colonies" or "tracts" in a wide area of Fresno and what is most notable about it is the small amount of land still available for sale. Most of the lots shown had been sold and the owners' names are identified. Real estate agent William Harvey however still had thirty-two lots available in the South Washington Colony with terms as follows: "sold in 20-acre tracts all the ditches constructed by the owner conveying water to the highest point in every 20-acre lot; price $100 per acre. Terms one-fourth cash; balance any time within four years with interest at the rate of 8 per cent." The lower portion of the map is taken up with advertisements for a variety of local businesses including banks and agricultural concerns. The verso of the map contains text in six columns headlined "Fresno Raisin District of California!" and is a lengthy promotional for the lands and their excellent properties for planting vineyards and engaging in raisin production.

OCLC locates three copies: at California State University Fresno; the Bancroft Library; and Yale. ‎MAP OF MINING LANDS IN TRINITY COUNTY CAL‎

‎Weaverville Trinity County Ca 1890. Blueprint map 33 1/2 x 33 inches. Old folds a handful of small areas of loss on the left side and along folds minor staining. Good plus. Framed under plexiglass. An exceedingly rare blueprint map enumerating the mining prospects in Trinity County California in the late 19th century. Located in northwestern California between the towns of Eurkea and Redding Trinity County is better known as a logging region rather than for its mining. This map is revealing of the high level of mining activity in the county at the time. It shows rivers creeks lakes mountain ranges and other topographical features and is laid out in a grid pattern with lines delineating wagon roads trails and county boundaries. The reference key at bottom indicates places on the map where one can find auriferous gravel land containing gold-bearing quartz cinnabar and coal. Mining-related locations specifically identified on the map include the Hawkins Bar Mine the Golden Chest Quartz Mines the La Grange Mine the largest hydraulic mine in the county Musser Hill Mines Bullychoop Quartz Mines and others. A California court ruling known as the Sawyer Decision of 1884 aimed to protect California public lands and waterways from mining debris caused by hydraulic blasting of entire mountains. Judge Lorenzo Sawyer's ruling is sometimes referred to as California's first environmental law and it forced miners to look at alternatives for unearthing valuable minerals. Dredging gravel beds became a commonplace practice and the current map shows the way to numerous locations where miners might try their luck at this newest method.

The map was compiled by Henry L. Lowden U.S. Deputy Mineral Surveyor and civil engineer and John F. Johnson topographical engineer. It is perhaps a precursor to what Vogdes calls the first map of Trinity County also compiled by Lowden and Johnson and published in 1894 as OFFICIAL MAP OF TRINITY COUNTY CALIFORNIA. Mining in the Trinity County region began slowly in the 1850s but was most active between 1880 and the late 1950s when over two million ounces of gold were produced mostly from placer mines.

Rare with no copies in OCLC. unknown books‎

‎AN EXCEPTIONAL LETTER SIGNED BY KING PHILIP IV TO THE VICEROY OF NEW SPAIN WITH REFERENCE TO THE THREATENED REVOLT OF THE INDIANS OF SINALOA AND NUEVA VIZCAYA DURING THE COMMANDING OFFICER'S ABSENCE IN CALIFORNIA‎

‎Madrid 1651. 2pp. Folio. Minimal edge toning else fine. An important letter from the King of Spain Philip IV regarding Indian revolts on the California border in the mid-17th century. The King is also asking the Viceroy's opinion as to whether it would be advisable to place the government of Sinaloa under that of Nueva Vizcaya or to agree to its complete separation. Little is known of the thirty- year period in California before the arrival of Kino making this letter of special interest to historians of the Golden State. The letter reads in part and in translation:

".In a letter from Don Diego Guardo Faxardo my Governor and Captain General of the provinces of New Vizcaya dated 14th June 1649 he gives an account of the intended rising of the Taraumares Indians who live in the midst of those provinces and that of Sinaloa; and foreseeing the danger that might arise should the Indians retire towards that part he decided - the officer commanding the garrison having set out for the Californias - to send a responsible person to command the troops and to catch the enemy in the midst of their preparations and make them my subjects.that he found the Captain of the Garrison showed much resistance because the said province was always under the Government of Nueva Vizcaya and their predecessors had refrained from nominating a commanding officer of the Garrison merely to please my Viceroys of New Spain which had led to much inconvenience for not being under their command in military matters the good effect gained in the other way was lost; because they do not wish to come under the rule of the Governors of the provinces of New Vizcaya.I therefore request you to make full investigations and notify me together with your own opinion on the subject."

Previously offered as item 4293 in Maggs Brothers' BIBLIOTHECA AMERICANA V 1926. unknown books‎

‎PORTS OF SAN FRANCISCO SAN DIEGO PUGET SOUND PORTLAND AND HONOLULU. COMPLIMENTS OF J.D. SPRECKELS & BROS. cover title‎

‎San Francisco: Printed by Wm. C. Brown 1889. 65411pp. including one chromolithographic advertisement plus three colored folding maps and four photographic plates of ships. Original brown cloth gilt title on front board within gilt border. Minor wear and soiling corners lightly bumped and worn front hinge a bit weak. Small ink stamp on blank facing first text leaf. Clean closed five-inch tear to map of San Diego Bay. The second edition greatly enlarged and improved over an edition published in 1886. This scarce guide to West Coast ports was produced by J.D. Spreckels & Bros. a major firm of commercial merchants and shippers on the Pacific Coast. Judging from the elaborate binding and production it was likely issued in a small edition for presentation to current and potential clients. The text gives much useful information on the ports of San Francisco San Diego Portland Puget Sound Vancouver Island and Honolulu including customs house rules rates for towing dockage pilotage and stevedores as well as the qualities of the ports and cities and other services provided.

There are three attractive folding colored maps which illustrate San Francisco Harbor the piers of the city of San Francisco and San Diego Bay respectively. The photographic plates show ships operated by Spreckels' firms. One of the ads at the rear is an attractive chromolithographic notice for the Oceanic Steamship Company founded by John D. Spreckels which made runs from San Francisco to Hawaii New Zealand and Australia.

The present copy has a small ink stamp on a front blank reading: "Barque Ingrid Captain Albert Andersen." The barque Ingrid was a Norwegian cargo ship active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Little is known of the ship's captain Albert Andersen unless this is the same Albert Andersen noted as a Norwegian steamship engineer in early April 1912 when he boarded as a 3rd Class passenger on the ill-fated Titanic. He died in the famous shipwreck and was buried in Nova Scotia after his body was recovered by the Mackay Bennett.

John D. Spreckels was prominent in San Diego affairs helping to develop Coronado Island as well as the city's railroad and ports. The Spreckels family were also well-known philanthropists but perhaps best-known in California as manufacturers of sugar from beets and whose factories had the unfortunate side effect of imparting unpleasant odors upon many a small town.

The Spreckels company issued a similarly titled work in 1886 covering only San Francisco with twenty pages of text and a map. Not in Cowan or Forbes. ROCQ 12268. OCLC 25581519. Printed by Wm. C. Brown hardcover books‎
