San Francisco: F.M. Nonaka & Co 1955. Wraps. Near fine. A small Japanese paper sample book issued by F.M. Nonaka & Co. in San Francisco circa 1955. The pocket-size booklet 4" x 6" contains eight samples with color variants for the final three and is bound with staples and a green paper spine in printed paper wrappers. In 1903 Frank Masakazu Nonaka 1885-1967 emigrated to America where he attended high school and business college. After 13 years with the Okada Company he established F.M. Nonaka & Company a successful import and export business located at 214 Front Street in San Francisco. The company ceased operations during the Second World War when Nonaka his wife Setsu and their daughters were forcibly evacuated from their home and then detained at the Topaz Relocation Center in Utah. In a display of resilience Nonaka returned to San Francisco after the war and revived his business in a new location: 655 Battery Street. He was naturalized in 1954 and was actively involved in several community organizations including the Japanese American Citizens League JACL and the Northern California Japanese Chamber of Commerce. The volume also provides lurid accounts of various crimes committed including lynchings robberies and murders as well as of natural disasters and mining accidents. A significant portion of the book is dedicated to the county's mining history and its geology as well as its the promotion of its agricultural resources. Includes a portrait and brief biography of Samuel Clemens Mark Twain who spent time around the mines in California as a reporter during the Civil War and apparently stayed in Tuolumne County during the winter of 1864-65 where he wrote "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." CATALINA ISLAND TRAVEL PHOTO ALBUM CIRCA 1890
Very good. An album containing thirty 4" x 4" black and white photographs of Catalina Island at the turn of the century. Four of the photographs are laid in; the rest are secured in the album with photo corners built into the pages. There are no markings in the album or on the photographs with the exception of a stamp noting that the photographs were printed by Merick Reynolds Co. on Broadway in Los Angeles. The album contains a variety of images of men women and children in Victorian dress and a few coastal shots. Notably the album includes a photograph of two women climbing up the steep wooden ladder of Sugarloaf Rock in Avalon Harbor. Remarkably they are in Victorian dress with long skirts. Sugarloaf Rock was graded and blasted away to make way for a hotel where ultimately the Catalina Casino was built in 1919. The album also includes a photograph of the S.S. Hermosa at the long pier in Avalon Harbor. The Hermosa according to an article in the 2007 Catalina Islander newspaper was launched in 1888 by the Wilmington Transportation Company and was the largest and most elegant vessel of its kind on the West Coast. It was a wooden ship 141 feet in length and capable of carrying 150 passengers. The well-known Hungarian Orchestra usually accompanied passengers on the almost three-hour crossing. She was decommission in 1902 stripped of her luxuries and burned in Avalon Bay during a 4th of July celebration. The album is bound in gray heavy paper wraps. None are dated or credited but all provide exterior views of this small community hospital in Northern California. The images include: • 6.5” x 5” photograph mounted on heavy black card stock sign reads Watsonville Sanatorium apparent dirt roads hitching posts immature plants in front. An identical photo was used in an advertisement that appeared on page 257 of The Official Register and Directory of Physicians and Surgeons in the State California published in 1903 by the California Medical Association. No address is given but the physician in charge is Dr. P.K. Waters and the facility is advanced as “A thoroughly Modern Hospital For the care of Surgical Medical and Maternity patients.” Some faint foxing. • 6.5” x 5” photograph mounted on heavy black card stock sign reads Watsonville Sanatorium apparent dirt roads hitching posts larger plants out front and the edge of a telephone pole seen. • 8” x 6” photograph mounted on heavy cream card stock sign reads Watsonville Sanitarium apparent dirt roads hitching posts white picket fence and a bungalow-type building that looks like a single family home. SAN FRANCISCO CHEMICAL WORKS DOCUMENT
Original mortgage document made between Robert P. Chase and inventor Egbert Putnam Judson on August 1 1856 for the purchase of "that certain parcel of land situated in the city of San Francisco near the Mission Dolores . commencing at a point on the south west side of Valencia street sixty five feet from the corner of Sparks and Valencia streets running thence northerly on Valencia street sixty-five feet thence westerly and parallel with Sparks street five hundred sixty feet to Guerrero street - thence southerly on the line of Guerrero street sixty five feet thence easterly parallel with Sparks street one hundred and sixty five feet to the place of beginning being the same premises known as the San Francisco Chemical Works." The initial agreement was for the sum of $2500; however a holographic addenda on the verso dated September 20 1858 and signed by both Judson and Chase records an outstanding balance of $3275.<br/><br/>Printed on one quarter of a 16 ½ x 13 ½" sheet which folds to roughly 3 ½" x 8 ¼". In addition to holographic addenda a blue paper onlay signed by notary Charles Halsey appears on the verso along with a holographic notation by George F. Kohler Deputy County Controller. The document is creased from prior folds with some minor soiling to two outer panels.<br/><br/>A native of Syracuse New York Egbert Putnam Judson 1812-93 traveled to San Francisco in 1850 to try his luck in the mines. He is said to have founded the first assay works in San Francisco in 1852 and was a principal organizer of the San Francisco Chemical Works later Judson & Sheppard. His interest in the manufacture of acids led to experiments with explosives and in August 1867 three pounds of dynamite were made at his plant and used in a trial blast of boulders. This was the first instance of the manufacture and use of dynamite in the United States after the invention of that explosive by Alfred Nobel in 1866. The trial was so successful that it led to the formation of the Giant Powder Company the same month.<br/><br/>Judson a director of the Giant company continued to operate the San Francisco Chemical Works which supplied acid to the Giant company and soon thereafter formed the Judson Powder Company in Kenvil New Jersey. On June 3 1873 he patented his "Giant Powder No. 2" patent no. 139468 which was manufactured successfully by both companies. Essentially the first high explosive blasting powder to supplant gunpowder "Giant powder" was for a long time a synonym for dynamite in the United States. Judson was the first to meet the need for an explosive which though powerful would be more "gentle" in action than a blasting powder producing a heaving rather than a shattering effect. Later in 1882 he founded the Judson Manufacturing Co. building bridges and structural steel with machine shops foundry and pattern shops and bolt and nut shops. The company had operations in Emeryville and Oakland California respectively. unknown books

A fact-filled promotional encouraging emigration to and investment in Baja California. The International Land Company of Mexico issued several similar pamphlets on Baja in the mid-to-late 1880s see Barrett 1303-1307 but the present example is the most elaborate in format having been printed on a single large sheet folded into twenty-four panels with text printed in varying orientations. The agricultural opportunities are described at great length as are the qualities of the city of Ensenada. The illustrations show orange groves oaks banana plants and olive trees and the map shows the Peninsula down to the twenty-eighth parallel. One paragraph discusses the fine quality honey produced in the region. Scarce. 1855 and 1856 ALS from California to his brother in Naperville Illinois
Sacramento California 1855. Two manuscript letters in ink both on ruled paper with folding creases the 1855 letter 8" x 12 1/2" with single spaced writing both sides approx. 500 words. The 1856 letter 15" x 10" folded in half to make 4 pp. approx. 300 words with small blindstamp top left corner depicting an eagle. The earlier letter is headed "September 18th 1855 Naperville Dupage County Illinois" and ends "Michael direct your letters Nevada County Nevada post office California". George writes to his brother Michael in Naperville that he has "seen a good dele sins i rote you they last letter" including a hundred "inshins" and some "Buffellow". He adds that "we had good luck all they way of may we left Council Bluff" and that he is not home sick yet. He then talks of the gold mines river mining what they are paying and the cost of things such as board "from five to ten dollars a week" "Beaf" "wors 15 to 20 cents" and "potato" "4 cent per pound". He adds that he intends to have some gold before he comes home and that "girls are not so plenty here as they are in state". He closes by asking his brother to write him and to remain at home in Illinois to care for their parents. The 1856 letter headed Sacramento august 3th 1856 informs his brother that he is well and "down to Sacramento now" working on a farm feeding a "schrasing" thrashing machine and that "they times is verry hard in California now". He adds that he had some money "stole" while he was in the mountains but since coming down into the valley he was making money and will send some home soon. The letter ends with George wishing to see them all soon and that he is not home sick. The third page of the letter bears a drawing of a wing or leaf eleven smaller versions of the same image interspersed on page 2. A fascinating testimonial on California during the gold rush written in a strong hand and in a wonderful vernacular style by a good observer. . HOLOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED. Manuscript. Very Good. books

Concerns violations of campaign spending limits as mandated by reform initiatives find complete text of Proposition 68 and extensive brief accounts of violations; for instance p.211 "Modoc County Supervisor Mick Jones voted on matters that affected a source of income involving local development projects owned or operated by Leisure Industries Inc." --which gave Jones monies he did not properly disclose. A $13000 fine was levied of which $1500 was waived. In another instance two in fact Quentin Kopp "failed to disclose" and "accepted illegal cash." Prefatory material allows that "This is not an official publicaton of the Government Code. It has been produced for use by the public and staff of the Fair Political Practices Commission."
