Two mounted boudoir-sized albumen photographs 7.5 x 4.5 in. mounted on 10 x 12 in. gray studio board w/ captions and photographer’s imprint w/in negative ink manuscript annotations on versos slight bowing to boards very minor wear to corners still VG exemplars. These remarkable scarce albumen photographs depict the newly completed Sweet Water Dam in Spring Valley CA which at a height of 90 feet was at the time the tallest masonry arch dam in the United States; and the also newly completed and now historic Hotel Del Coronado. The Sweet Water Dam was built under the direction of civil engineer Frank E. Brown who had also overseen the Bear Valley Dam and enabled the economic development and expansion in Southern California of the National City Chula Vista and Bonita regions. The Hotel Del Coronado was a key part of the land development of Coronado by Elisha Babcock and Hampton Story who contracted with architect James Reid to prepare preliminary sketches and in 1887 the Reid Brothers of Evansville IN oversaw the construction which eventually used over a million board feet of lumber using extensive California redwood siding for termite resistance. The Hotel Del Coronado served as the perfect writing place for L. Frank Baum where he later penned Dorothy & The Wizard 1908 Road to Oz 1909 and the Emerald City 1910. Worden 1868-1946 grew up in Philadelphia studied painting at the PAFA and became a photographer while serving in the Spanish-American War. In 1902 after the war he established his studio near the Presidio and began photographing views of San Francisco’s Coastline Golden Gate Park Chinatown the devastating 1906 earthquake and fire and later hand-painting or colouring the images for sale. In 1915 at the height of his career he was appointed one of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition’s official photographers. ‎SAN FRANCISCO IMPORTS DURING THE GOLD RUSH‎

‎A group of 13 Gold Rush-era shipping documents recording the import of international goods to the port of San Francisco between 1849 and 1857.<br /> <br /> The news of gold at Sutter’s Mill in 1847 lured more than 300000 people from the rest of the United States and abroad to San Francisco which then had a population of just 459 residents. These new emigrants brought only small amounts of goods with them and there was little farming in California to support the '49ers. Most American merchants who sold provisions and amenities during the California Gold Rush dealt in imported goods such as dried fish and beef jerky canvas and clothing tools lumber candles coffee and livestock from points abroad.<br /> <br /> One invoice dated May 3 1850 is for 100 tons of coal shipped from Duffryn Steam Coal in Liverpool to G.W. Aspinwall a prominent businessman and co-founder of both the Pacific Mail Steamship Company and Panama Canal Railway companies which revolutionized the migration of goods and people to the West Coast.<br /> <br /> Another four-page handwritten invoice in this group dated September 15 1849 lists sundries shipped on the Steamer Clyde from Jamaica to the merchants Jewett and Melhado in San Francisco. It includes cases of jams jellies pickles Brandy seasoning salt and more. In addition to supplying miners Jewett and Melhado provided monthly reports in the Alta California newspaper on the price and flow of goods in Northern California. Other receipts record everything from the import of cigars to bales of twine and canvas cloth. unknown‎

‎San Francisco: Pacific States Telephone and Telegraph Company 1906. Very good. 2293pp. plus four leaves of advertisements printed on colored paper. Publisher's brown printed wrappers. Minor creasing and edge wear to wrappers tiny chip to bottom corner of front wrapper. Minor occasional foxing to text about half of final leaf comprising advertisements lacking. Otherwise a nice survival. The first complete telephone directory published after the monumental 1906 San Francisco earthquake and resulting conflagration that consumed and destroyed much of the city. Two temporary directories were printed after the disaster the first issued on May 12; its supplement was issued May 26. Both of the temporary directories are extremely scarce as is the present work. Interestingly as some mention of the 1906 earthquake and fire were printed in the temporary directories the present work does not dwell on recent events but is a rather straightforward phone directory. This perhaps speaks to the resilience of the people and commercial interests in San Francisco to simply put the tragedy behind them and get on with life and business. The Pacific States Telephone and Telegraph Company directories began in 1905 and ceased in 1907. Rare with only two physical copies located in OCLC both understandably in the Bay Area at the Oakland Public Library and St. Patrick's Seminary & University. ‎Arcadia California: Los Angeles Turf Club Inc 1941. Quarto: 83 p. with numerous photographic illustrations on tabbed leaves. Spiral bound in the original printed paper wrappers. A bit of wear along the fore-edge. The wrappers are unevenly toned with some minor soiling to the front panel and a series of pencil notations to the rear. Scarce OCLC locates no holdings.<br /> <br /> An elaborate and completely intact press kit created by Fred A. Pruner the head of Santa Anita's publicity department for its eighth annual season originally scheduled to begin December 31 1941 and run through March 16 1942. Instead opening day - three weeks after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor - was cancelled at the request of U.S. Army officials. On January 5 Santa Anita general manager Charles H. Strub announced the cancellation of entire season. Four months later the first 587 imprisoned Japanese Americans arrived at what had become known as the Santa Anita Assembly Center the largest and longest-occupied of the 17 prison camps created by the Wartime Civil Control Administration. ‎Scale of Premiums and Discounts Assessed upon Lots to Be Distributed to the Shareholders of the San Francisco Homestead Union. caption title‎

‎San Francisco 1862. Good. Broadside about 14 x 8.5 inches. Previously folded with separation along horizontal fold line from right edge. Minor edge wear plus short closed tear at center of left edge. Moderate staining and soiling. An unrecorded broadside concerning values on parcels of land in what is now San Francisco's Mission District that were set to be auctioned to shareholders in the San Francisco Homestead in April 1862. The broadside contains a table that displays lot numbers and the assessed values of those lots as well as the "premium" or "discount" relative to the average assessed values of all lots which was $141. At right are specific rules for shareholders bidding on lots at the distribution and several notes on adjustments to the surveyed lot sizes and dimensions. Many of the lots in this section are on Mission Street Valencia Street Old San Jose Road or somewhere in between. Not present but referenced in the text of this broadside is a map that would have shown the lots and their corresponding numbers. Approximately forty-nine 7 x 10 inch pages with ninety-four 3 ½ x 3 ½ inch photos; five 1 ½ x 2 inch photos; one 1 ½ x 4 ½ inch photo; and one 5 x 6 ½ inch photo. Binding broken with staining on cover. Photographs generally very good to excellent contrast with a portion at the end significantly faded. Overall very good. Scrapbook of photographs mainly showing home life and recreation of a family with young children in central California in the early 1900s. The family spend time playing with their children in the yard going to the beach and hiking in the woods. There are also several snaps of buildings at Stanford University shortly after their construction. Of interest as a depiction of everyday life in turn-of-the-century California. unknown‎

‎Sears Township Assessment Ledger Book 1880‎

‎Sears Township California 1880. 10 ½ x 16 inch ledger seventy-five pages. Staining and damage to corners not affecting legibility. Very good to excellent. A ledger of the Sears Township assessor documenting assessment of property values. Sears Township does not appear to exist anymore but a November 1891 census bulletin lists a Sears Township in Sierra County with a population of 400 in 1890 and 585 in 1880. This is likely the same Sears Township as many of the property locations in the ledger are within present-day Sierra County such as Scales St. Louis Howland Flat and others. A later pencil marking on the first page attributes the ledger to Plumas county; this is probably incorrect. The properties include homes businesses and mining claims – most are the latter. <br /> <br /> Chinese immigrants played a significant role in the California gold rush and the ledger indicates the presence of a number of Chinese people in the area particularly in the town of Scales – enough of a presence that according to the ledger Scales had a “Chinatown.†This is given as the location of Ah Toy’s house and a more precise location for Scales’ Chinatown could be found from the ledger’s description of Ah Toy’s residence. Many individuals listed under “Ah†owned property in Scales: Toy Hung Fook and Fon owned houses Tong owned a meat market and Chung owned a warehouse. In addition Hopsing Chung is listed as owning a storehouse in Scales and the first page notes the Ah Wok Mining Company’s claim in Council Hill. Note the possibility that those listed as “Ah†are not one family; “Ah†is not necessarily a surname but can be a sort of nickname-generating prefix similar to “cousin†or “uncle/auntie†that often ended up appended to Chinese immigrant’s names.<br /> <br /> Of interest as a detailed record of the former properties and residents of some of California’s mining ghost towns. unknown‎

‎SOBOBA MINERAL HOT SPRINGS: Open All Year‎

‎San Jacinto California: Soboba Mineral Hot Springs 1929. This resort was opened in 1919 by Robert G. Althouse of Los Angeles who owned candy stores and the United States Hotel in Los Angeles. Located 95 miles from Los Angeles it was nestled at the base of the San Jacinto mountains at an altitude of 2200 feet. "The waters of Soboba were long famed among the Indians and are praised in Helen Hunt Jackson's historical novel Ramona" the brochure says. "They emerge pure and clear as crystal from the solid rock with no possibility of contamination." The brochure touts that the resort could be reached by "paved roads" an auto stage from Union Station the Santa Fe train and the Pacific Electric with a transfer in Riverside. In 1941 Althouse sued the Metropolitan Water District after construction of the Colorado River aqueduct rendered his land "valueless" by diverting underground water away from his property. He ultimately sold the resort in 1947 to a Los Angeles syndicate. Printed in two colors on a 16" x 8" sheet that folds to 4" x 8" 8 panels. Some very light edgewear; else near fine. First edition of this uncommon souvenir album documenting the 1901 visit of President McKinley to the Carnival of Roses sponsored by the Santa Clara County Rose Society. This festival was only the second after the original in 1896 and was intended to compete with the Pasadena Rose Pageant at the time. President McKinley visited California only months before his assassination at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo New York. He was the first U.S. President to visit the state after acquisition following the Mexican-American War and brief independence. The photos show McKinley his cabinet the Ladies Auxiliary organizers floats and scenes of California as the 20th Century opened. ‎STOCKHOLDER LEDGER AND BOARD MINUTES OF A CALIFORNIA MINING COMPANY‎

‎The stockholder ledger and minutes of the board of directors from 1877 to 1938 for the Deadwood Gold Mining Company located in Nevada City California. The materials record the life of the operation from its formation to its dissolution showing the mine never seemed to turn a profit despite its early history as a gold producer.<br /> <br /> Deadwood was an important town from 1851 to 1861 and a stop on the California-Oregon stage line until 1886. According to the 1922 Mines Register the Deadwood mine consisted of 95 patented acres located two miles east of Nevada City. Ore occurred in a vein up to 18" wide carrying pyrite galena sphalerite and arsenopyrite. From the ledger it appears multiple efforts were made to sell the mining operation beginning as early as 1900. The property was sold in 1933 and the board effectively forfeited its charter; however the company was not officially dissolved until 1938. Deadwood is now a ghost town along the famous Western States Trail.<br /> <br /> The first page of the ledger contains the March 5 1877 handwritten notes for the first board of directors meeting when R.B. Symington was appointed president of the company additional officers were selected and authorization was given to issue stock. The December 1878 board minutes record the approval to purchase a mill for $4000 in order to crush ore pulled from the mine and a February 1879 report from the mine president William H. Smith paints a positive picture of operations: "We are now engaged in arranging a water tower to be used instead of steam. The prospects of the mine are better now than ever and it is confidently expected that before long we shall be able to declare dividends."<br /> <br /> The ledger is comprised of 289 pages of which 178 are used for manuscript notes as well as pasted down typed board minutes and other documents related to company business. A holographic list of stockholders and assessments for the year 1910 is pasted down on the front flyleaf opposite a similar 1916 document. Approximately 42 loose business documents are laid in.<br /> <br /> The brown cloth folio ledger measures approximately 14" x 8 1/2" with "Record D.G.M. Co." stamped in gilt on the spine. The leather is scuffed with minor splitting to the top of the front joint and some loss at the corners and tips. The binding is still quite sound. unknown‎

‎Substantial Collection of Family and Personally-Produced Photographs by Noted California Artist and Amateur Photographer Isabel Porter Collins‎

‎Various locations in California mostly Sausalito and other locations in Marin and Sonoma Counties 1930. Very good. Nine photograph albums in a variety of bindings containing approximately 810 photographs the great majority paper prints but with a fair share of tintypes and CDVs in the earliest two albums plus 102 loose negatives three negative rolls and a metal container housing 135 later color slides. A phenomenal collection of photographs from noted but still somewhat obscure California artist teacher and amateur shutterfly Isabel Margaret Porter Collins. The collection numbers over 800 images ranging from early family images featuring dozens of Collins' antecedents from the 1870s to 1890s personal albums featuring Collins with her family and friends in various locations in California over the course of about thirty years and an album and some further images produced by Collins' son Henry Benjamin Collins whom she called Ben. The collection was most likely retained by Ben. Isabel Margaret Porter Collins 1875-1954 was an artist and teacher who produced both amateur and fine art photography. She was born in Petaluma to a prominent Marin County family descending from the Collins-Dowd-Harris-Howard-Porter line. Collins was a talented visual artist and studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art from 1898-1900. She then worked as a pen-and-ink artist for Shreve & Company producing greeting cards and place cards. She was subsequently employed by Dirk Van Erp from whom she learned coppersmithing producing lamps shades pen trays and other hammered copper objects. In 1906 she married Henry Collins and moved to Sausalito where she taught in Bay Area public schools until her retirement in 1945. She participated in major exhibitions for the San Francisco Art Association 1896 and 1901 and earned a gold medal at the California State Fair in 1900. In her later years Collins lived with her daughter in Seattle. After she died Collins was buried in the family plot in Ukiah California.<br /> <br /> The photograph albums are not organized in strict chronological order as the images overlap slightly in time within a few of the albums. Still the albums are detailed as follows in roughly chronological order: <br /> <br /> 1 Annotated Family Photograph Album. 1870s-1890s. 16 leaves illustrated with forty-four photographs mostly cabinet cards measuring around 6 x 4 inches inset one per page into picture windows with the last six pages comprised of tintypes presented six per page in smaller picture windows. Contemporary padded cloth covers central metal device on front cover manuscript titles to spine reading "Harris Howard Porter Collins." Front cover detached cloth worn and somewhat soiled fore-edge clasp lacking. Occasional wear to photos. The album opens with a nice image of Collins' mother Eliza Harris Porter captioned with her name as well as her birth and death dates. Similarly captioned photographs populate the album throughout featuring Collins' family members and friends such as Alpheus Josephus Harris Julia Harris Polk Porter and so forth providing a solid avenue down which to pursue Collins' ancestry. Many of the images emanate from Honolulu Hawaii where Collins' family lived and worked for some time.<br /> <br /> 2 Annotated Family Photograph Album. 1880s-1890s. 13 leaves illustrated with twenty-five photographs mostly cabinet cards measuring around 6 x 4 inches inset one per page into picture windows. Contemporary red padded cloth with central metal device and corner pieces on front cover four small metal feet on rear cover two music boxes stored within the rear cover which no longer appear to be working and metal clasp on fore-edge. Contents generally nice with occasional dust-soiling. Like the first album this collection of photographs is comprised of cabinet card images of Collins' antecedents beginning with Josephine Porter and also including another image of Collins' mother "Polk with Josie Porter 8-12-82 Healdsburg" "Joe Porter Weller Nevada" "Mr. Crow Nevada Cattleman" Pamela Everett Howard Harris and others. Most notably this album includes an image of a young Collins herself with the manuscript caption reading "Isabelle Porter Collins." In addition to the inset photographs in the album there are several items laid in including later letters to Collins' descendants and a few additional photographs. Another good opportunity to pursue Collins' family lineage.<br /> <br /> 3 Annotated Vernacular Photograph Album of Family and Scenes in Marin County. 1905-1912. 16 leaves illustrated with 104 photographs. Oblong folio. Contemporary gray wrappers. Moderate edge wear and minor soiling to wrappers. Minor dust-soiling to contents but mostly clean and in nice shape. This is the first album in the collection that we can assume is comprised mostly of photographs by Isabel Collins herself. The album features over a hundred shots of Collins and her family mostly centered on her son Ben her mother Eliza and various aunts uncles and family friends. The family is pictured at home in Sausalito as well as traveling around to nearby places in Marin and Sonoma counties such as Fort Ross Sonoma Mission Slide Ranch Muir Woods Carmel and Mill Valley. Apparently Collins's son Ben has occasionally provided his own later captions in some of the albums evidenced here by his inclusion of the word "Grandma" over an image of Eliza Harris Porter. In addition to displaying Collins' talent for photography this album and most of those that follow provide a wide view of the scenery and landscape of the area of California just north of the San Francisco Bay Area where Collins spent most of her married and family life.<br /> <br /> 4 Marin - Monterey & Mendocino Cos. The photos begin in Sausalito at the Collins home and also include pictures of Boyes Hot Springs San Miguel Mission the Presidio Chapel in Monterey Santa Barbara and Sherwood Creek among others. This album also contains numerous images of the Sherwood School in Sherwood California in 1912 where Collins taught school. These images include a class picture of Collins and her class standing outside their one-room schoolhouse other pictures of the school and its students local Sherwood residents a sheep farm in the area and some mining scenes around Sherwood. The small number of photos from Arizona include a shot of Collins labeled "circa 1900 1st teaching job." Fair" and engaged in other recreational activities in and around Sausalito. Two loose images in this album display Collins' photo credit stamp on the verso reading "Isabel Porter Collins Photograph."<br /> <br /> 6 Snap-Shots manuscript cover title. 1911-1930s. 12 leaves illustrated with 116 photographs. One leaf detached but mostly clean and nice internally. A heavily annotated vernacular photograph album that appears to have been compiled by both Isabel and her son Ben and likely mostly the latter. The majority of the images though were likely taken by Isabel though some images are credited to Ben's friends Lafka and Harpo. The photos capture a wide variety of scenes of the Collins family in Sausalito hunting camping and more as well as scenes of Ben's social life and travel to Seattle Salt Lake City and Salinas. Interestingly this album includes a portrait photograph of Collins captioned "Mother 1898 Art School."<br /> <br /> 7 Photos by Isabel Porter Collins - Vallejo manuscript cover title. 1920s-1930s. 38 leaves illustrated with seventy-six photographs and a handful of ephemeral items. Small oblong quarto. Contemporary Japanese-style blank book string tied manuscript title on front cover. Minor wear and soiling to covers. The preponderance of this album concerns Collins' time as a teacher at Lincoln School in Vallejo in the 1920s with numerous images of the students fellow teachers and outdoor scenes around the school. One of the more interesting series of images pictures the Kikuchi children with a later note in Collins' hand reading "Japanese Father Died Consentration sic Camp WWII. Was Vallejo Barber/Wife." There are also several photos of the Collins children and other family members visiting San Francisco. This album was most likely compiled by Collins herself as it includes a few hand-illustrated gift cards from her daughter Clairice Thorsen nee Collins and programs from events attended by Isabel and her two kids with manuscript captions by Collins.<br /> <br /> 8 Annotated Vernacular Photograph Album Recording Isabel Collins' Travels. 1935-1936. 77 loose leaf sheets illustrated with 178 photographs and about thirty postcards. Quarto. Contemporary hardcover three-ring binder covered in decorative floral paper possibly by Collins herself. Minor wear. A few leaves detached from the three-ring binder minor wear to contents but mostly clean and in nice shape. A handmade and very personal account of Collins' travels to Santa Barbara Montecito Santa Ynez Tejon Pass and more in 1935 and 1936 profusely annotated with manuscript captions of the people and places she visited. Collins sees Santa Barbara College the 1935 Santa Barbara Festival the 1936 Old Spanish Days Fiesta Parade in Santa Barbara Huntington Gardens the Santa Ynez Mission and more during her travels. A couple of images feature noted California artist Helen Seegert one captioned "Helen Seegert as a Mexican Flower Girl." The last five pages include a detailed handwritten account and a map detailing the portion of Collins' travels in November 1936. A great many of the vernacular images in this travel album were likely taken by Collins herself except for the images she distinctly captions with the photo credit of another "Photo by Leila Robins" or "Anderson's Photo '35".<br /> <br /> 9 Vamos a Guaymas Mamie y Ben 1-57 manuscript cover title. 1957 1962. 5 leaves illustrated with twenty-three photographs. Oblong quarto. Contemporary black cloth manuscript title on front cover spiral bound. Spine worn moderate edge wear. A short collection of photographs recording Ben Collins and his wife Mamie on a trip to Guaymas Mexico in 1957 and with four photos of a later vacation to southern California in 1962. In addition to this later album the present collection includes three negative rolls and a metal container housing 135 color slides dating from the 1950s and '60s which most likely belong to Ben as well. The assortment of 102 loose negatives arranged by place in a couple of envelopes Sausalito and "Nature Trails Sequoia 1930s" are most likely Isabel Collins' work.<br /> <br /> Collins' photographs are positively rare institutionally. The most substantial collection of Collins' work is held by the California Historical Society numbering 222 photographic prints mostly from her time at the Hopkins Institute. The California State Library holds seven photographs. These two collections are the only institutional records we could find of Collins' work. The paper novelty printer also issued holiday greeting cards comic postcards and historic colour-linen postcards based out of Southern California. Kashower 1883-1920 was a Russian Jewish-American who had emigrated to the U.S. in 1890 and by 1910 was working printing shops in Southern California. First edition of this very scarce original broadside announcing the dismantling of one of the “Gayway†attractions at the Golden Gate International Exposition which featured “Nude Artist’s Models†revues and the very popular Folies Bergeres striptease burlesque shows. These were amongst the “Adults Only†shows at the GGIE and this scarce broadside circular served for the aspiring nostalgia buff as their “Pass to Treasure Island.†Barnard 1894-1966 was a San Francisco hardware dealer who also specialized in architectural salvage and later sold Mid-Century Modern furnishings following World War II. He participated as one of the main auctioneers disposing of GGIE fixtures following the attack on Pearl Harbor and conversion of Treasure Island into a Naval Base rather than the originally planned housing development. A detailed and mathematically elaborate promotional for irrigation construction by the California Corrugated Culvert Company. The booklet chiefly advertises various types of "Armco" flumes manufactured by the company and includes numerous photographic reproductions illustrations and blueprints as well as complex tables and mathematical formulae that testify to the safe quick and efficient movement of water by these structures. The complexity of some of the math printed here suggests that the pamphlet was aimed at engineers and other highly-educated employees of irrigation projects in California. Father Vicente de Santa María 1742 – July 16 18061 was a Spanish Franciscan priest who accompanied explorer Juan de Ayala on the first Spanish naval entry aboard the San Carlos into the San Francisco Bay. Maria wrote detailed first-hand accounts of the journey of the San Carlos and of the indigenous inhabitants of the San Francisco Bay Area prior to Spanish colonization.
