Nineteenth-century Boston children's book with hand-coloured illustrations by Chandler and Duran. The Delectable Historie of the Cat and the Rabbits.
Boston: G. W. Cottrell Publisher. 'Entered according to the Act of Congress in the year 1859 by CHANDLER & DURAN in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of Massachussetts.'. 29pp. small 4to. Stitched into card covers. Internally in fair condition in aged and worn covers repaired along the spine with brown tape. There are eleven hand-coloured engravings: one on the cover a frontispiece two vignettes at the beginning and end of the poem and seven full-page illustrations in the body of the poem six of them with blank reverses. The cover illustration frontispiece and all but two of the full-page engravings are attributed to Chandler and Duran. The hand-coloured engraving on the front cover is of a cat pouncing on a rabbit in foliage while other rabbits scatter together with the publisher's details and the title 'The Delectable Historie of the Cat and the Rabbits'. This illustration also features without the lettering included within it on p.21 of the poem. The back cover carries an advertisement for Cottrell's business. The pagination includes the covers and on the reverse of the front cover paginated as p.2 is an attractive full-page frontispiece engraving of the cat in question. The poem begins on p.3 under the drophead title: 'Ye Delectable Historie of YE CAT AND YE RABBITS.' It is in 52 four-line stanzas numbered in Roman numerals and begins: 'Once on a time by the side of a wood Dwelt a populous burrow of Rabbits Happy contented moral and good - A people of excellent habits.' The poem ends with the rabbit having eaten a number of rabbits being shot with an arrow by a shepherd: 'Then sighing repenting and breathing his last He uttered the moral which follows: “A rogue is a fool and soon is caught fast In the trap he has set for his fellows.â€' Excessively scarce: the only two copies on OCLC WorldCat at Dartmouth Library and Brown University and no copies on COPAC. Old folds some chipping to right hand corners affecting date and text identifying ward number two small holes in center not affecting text else VG. 1p. pen and ink on paper. 8 x 4 inches. Between 1758 and 1800 the Boston Overseers of the Poor admitted around 7200 persons into the almshouse. Polly Ballard would have been sent to the almshouse at the corner of Beacon and Park streets in Boston established in 1696 to replace the city's original almshouse which had been destroyed in a fire. The site also included a prison added in 1723 and a separate workhouse built in 1739. The "Almshouse Keeper" was Samuel Whitwell who had served as an overseer of the poor for 21 years. Overseer of the Poor Edward Edes 1745-1803 was a Boston baker who baked among other items ships bread. He was also half-owner of the brigantine merchant ship "Olive Branch." He was the son of Thomas Edes 1719-1794 and Sarah Larabee 1719-1791. He married his half-cousin Elizabeth Edes in 1768 and had two sons. RECIEVED INTO THE ALSMHOUSE. <br/><br/> unknown

<p>Boston MA: Printed by Dutton and Wentworth 1830. 1830. Very good. - Octavo 8-1/2 inches high by 5-1/4 inches wide. Softcover bound in printed self-wrappers. Once bound in with other similar pamphlets these three related items are unbound and removed with stab marks along the left edges. The pagination is a follows: pages 1-11 1 & 13-21 1-8; and 1-12. There is some scattered foxing throughout all three items. The cover page of the Senate No. 10 report dated December 15 1829 is darkened & stained with minor chipping to the bottom corners of that page and of the last page. Very good.</p><p>First edition Massachusetts Senate No. 21. The report is signed on page 11 by John W. Lincoln Chairman. The report is followed by the text of a bill entitled "An act to establish the Boston and Lowell Rail Road Corporation."</p><p>The Boston and Lowell Railroad was the first major railroad in the state of Massachusetts. The Boston and Lowell Railroad was preceded by the Middlesex Canal. Converting the canal to a railroad would eliminate the issue of transportation being unavailable during the winter when the canal froze. Patrick Tracy Jackson led the task of convincing the state legislature to fund the project. This proved difficult as the investors of the Middlesex Canal were against building a new form of transportation designed to replace their canal. The report at hand details the protest of the directors of the Middlesex Canal against granting the petition of John F. Loring and others to construct a railroad in its place. Loring and the other investors received their charter on June 5 1830 and the railroad began operations on June 24 1835.</p><p>The pamphlet is accompanied by an earlier February 12 1830 pamphlet titled:"To the Honorable the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled. : The president directors and company of the Middlesex Canal having seen the publication of the petition of John F. Loring and others for a rail road from Boston to Lowell and the order of notice thereon beg leave to present the following remonstrance to granting the prayer thereof." 12 pages. Signed page 12: Wm. Sullivan Josh. Coolidge Geo. Hallet committee of directors of Middlesex Canal to this purpose duly authorized. House No. 40 printed by Dutton and Wentworth 1830.</p><p>In addition an earlier pamphlet from 1829 is included: "Boston December 15 1829. To His Excellency Levi Lincoln Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts : Sir On the behalf of the Commissioners of Internal Improvements I have the honor to transmit herewith a report of a survey made in conformity to a resolve of the legislature passed on the 12th day of June 1829 directing the Board to survey a route for a rail road from the town of Taunton to some point in the route previously surveyed between Boston and Providence : with great consideration and respect I am your humble and most obe't. serv't. Rare early American newspaper prospectus announcing publication of The Boston Chronicle a weekly Loyalist paper. "John Mein a bookseller was the publisher and John Fleeming the printer. With the beginning of the second year the size of the paper was enlarged to folio and it was publihsed every Monday and Thursday and was the first newspaper to be published twice a week in New-England. To avoid popular resentment of his political views Mein was forced to leave the country before the close of its second year and the paper was continued by Fleeming in the name of the firm until its publication ceased on the 25th of June 1770" Evans.<br /> <br /> The five "conditions" listed on the recto detail the general design of the paper - that it will be printed on high quality demy paper with specially designed type 8 pages in quarto priced at 6 shillings and 8 pence printed every Monday and delivered to subscrribers with care. The photograph is inlaid within a 7-1/8 inch high by 10-5/8 inch wide sheet of cream paper. Near fine.</p><p>Founded in 1851 the YMCA of Greater Boston was the first YMCA in the United States. Located at 458 Boylston Street the building was destroyed by a fire on January 13 1910.</p> Boston, circa 1883 to 1893.

A mayor of Boston is called "a 'desperate punster'" and a famous Boston historian is described as "'a showy boy at school and college" and "a pushing man with industry and memory enough to be a good scholar but with great talents for making himself ridiculous.'"
