[Abolition Movement - Boston] M
Anti-Slavery Bazaar
Boston: Anti-Slavery Bazaar 1849. Small broadside measuring 7 ¾ x 4 ½ inches printed on green wove paper. Some creases and a small tear at margin near fine. Near Fine. The American Anti-Slavery Society hosted annual bazaars which served as fundraisers with money going to supporting the National Anti-Slavery Standard newspaper. Many women were involved with the event and sold abolitionist items. Offered here is one such piece of ephemera from the 1849 fair a poem written by an unknown author with the pen name “M.†The poem was featured in the poetry section of The Liberator January 26 1849 Vol. XIX. No. 4. with the description “The two following poetical effusions were written for the Anti-Slavery Bazaar In Faneuil Hall by friends of freedom in the old world.†
It reads:

Ye friends of liberty all hail!
May your endeavours never fail
In freedom’s sacred cause!
May blessings e’er attend your course
In striving to uproot all force
And stern oppression’s laws!
Yours is a noble task my friends!
And God his gracious favor lends
To speed ye on your way
Until you reach the blessed goal
When ev’ry dark benighted soul
Shall hail bright freedom’s ray.
Oh! may he speed the time when all
Their fellow-men shall brethren call
And the deep wrong remove
When the dark chains of slavery
Give place to sacred liberty
And bonds of holy love!
Oh! it were happiness to bind
In such bright chains all human kind
And set each captive free;
For when oppressions all shall cease
And this fair world be fill’d with peace
Like Heav’n on earth ‘twill be!

A very nice example of the anti-slavery movement during this period. [Abolitionism – Boston] Phillips, Wendell; Yerrinton, J M W
Wendell Phillips on the War
Boston Massachusetts: William Lloyd Garrison and Isaac Knapp 1861. Single sheet letterpress broadside measuring 18 x 24 ½ inches. Folded with small tears at folds and marginal damage; excellent to Near Fine. Offered here is a “phonographic report†i.e. it includes the audience’s reaction of a speech delivered by abolitionist Wendell Phillips 1811–1884 to the Twenty-Eighth Congregational Society in Boston on April 21 1861. The report was printed in an extra of William Lloyd Garrison’s Liberator newspaper. Shortly following the first Battle of Fort Sumter the speech finds Phillips throwing his full support behind the cause of war. He insists to his audience:

“The anti-slavery enterprise to which I belong started with peace written on its banner. We imagined that the age of bullets was over; that the age of ideas had come; that thirty millions of people were able to stake a great question and decide it by the conflict of opinions; and without letting the ship of State founder lift four millions of men into Liberty and Justice. . Our mistake if any has been that we counted too much on the intelligence of the masses on the honesty and wisdom of statesmen as a class. . The North thinks—can appreciate argument—is in the nineteenth century—hardly any struggle left in it but that between the working class and the money kings. The South dreams—it is the thirteenth and fourteenth century—baron and serf—noble and slave. . Our struggle therefore is no struggle between different ideas but between barbarism and civilization. Such can only be settled by arms. Prolonged cheering.â€

We find three copies of this newspaper in OCLC. Of interest to scholars of Phillips’ work and of abolitionism especially Boston abolitionists.

1 “Wendell Phillips Dead: The Last Hours Of One Of The Apostles Of Abolition†The New York Times February 3 1884 1. [American Revolution Battle Plan] [Plan appearing in:] Bickerstaff's Boston Almanack, for the year of our Redemption, 1780
View of the British Fortress at Stoney-Point Stormed and Carried by a party of the Light Corps of the American Army under the command of Gen. WAYNE on the morning of the 16th of July last.
Scarce Contemporary Stony Point Battle Plan

This rather crude woodcut depicts a battle plan of General "Mad Anthony" Wayne's daring and dramatic capture of the British fortification at Stony Point about 30 miles up the Hudson River from New York City. The battle planned in detail by Washington took place around midnight on July 16 1779.

The lower portion of the battle plan includes a four item key: "A. The British Fortress B. Abattes abatis in front C. The Reserve D. The detached Party who stormed the Works." Nebenzahl's A Bibliography of Printed Battle Plans of the American Revolution 1775-1795 cites only a 1784 London-printed battle plan by Faden for the Stony Point engagement #145. The offered plan is not noted by Nebenzahl was published in America and was issued five years earlier than the Faden plan. The Bickerstaff's Boston Almanack for 1780 would almost certainly have been published in November or December of 1779 – within six months of the actual battle.

A very scarce almanac in the trade. Auction records indicate the most recent copy sold at the Gutman sale in 2005 for $4800. Prior to that Swann sold an example in 1979.

References: For the almanac: Evans: 16287; Drake: 3290. For the map: Cresswell: 309.

Condition: Map appears on verso of title page and measures about 6 ½ x 3 ¾." Almanac is complete in 24 pp. Slight loss of road table text at upper tip of final leaf.

ICN 7643. Printed and sold by Draper and Folsom, and John Mycall of Newbury.

[Boston Fire Fighting]
Signed Manuscript Letter Regarding a Plan for Fighting Fire in Boston.

Letter sheets 8" x 12" 3 pages plus integral address leaf. Extensive tape repairs to folds mostly archival tape but some regular tape too which has caused a little browning in areas long tear obscures writers signature but partially visible creased normal aging and browning remnant of wax seal; otherwise good or better. The letter is to Boston Mayor Josiah Quincy 1772-1864 a future head of Harvard and served eight years in Congress. It appears after becoming Boston's mayor he sent delegates to New York and Philadelphia to study fire fighting techniques in those cities. The author of this letter read about this mission and sent Mayor Quincy a lengthy letter on the subject. The probable author is Solon Robinson 1803-1880 although his signature is partially obscured by a tear. However on the back page a smudged docketed note identifies him as Solon Robertson or Robinson. Robinson was a writer and would become a well known Indiana pioneer. In any case the author would suggest a far more modern system for fighting fires than the existing practice of engines carrying water to fires which would become useless when the water ran out. he proposed putting lead aqueduct pipes "laid deep underground and leading to every part of the city." While her does not use the term fire hydrants the water would be accessed from locked iron covers that would serve that function. ABN.
