Two complete years of this weekly from 29 October 1803 through 19 October 1805 bound together: Volume II no. 1-52; Volume III no. 1-52. Folio. Pp. vi208;vi208. Text is printed in triple columns. Each volume is preceded by an index arranged according to the style of the piece essay history useful poetry etc. There are two title-pages for Volume III; one is bound at the beginning of Volume II and the other is in its proper place. The title-page for Volume II is lacking. Paper quality varies throughout. Text leaves are age-browned and occasionally lightly soiled and/or foxed mostly light to moderate but in a few instances it is heavy with a few dog-eared corners and occasional edgewear. Volume II no. 41 p. 163-4 has some loss at the bottom fore-corner resulting in a loss of text to the last few lines in one column. Bookblock is splitting with remnants of the backstrip; but the boards are missing. The June 16 1804 issue third page p.135 second column. "Domestick" mentions that Captain Lewis was in Pittsburg "accompanied by twenty Indian chiefs." There are a couple of tohter references to the L&C expedition. unknown

Precursor to the book of the same name with a slightly different subtitle that would become a cornerstone of the second-wave feminist movement of the 1970s breaking all kinds of barriers that stood in the way of women taking control of their own bodies & health. Born at a 1969 workshop entitled "Women and Their Bodies" it was first published by the Boston Women's Health Course Collective & printed by the New England Free Press in that same city in 1971. We believe that this is the Second Printing described as "New Printing of Women & Their Bodies" on the front cover described by the editors as having been "rushed to print with no revisions since the first printing sold out so quickly." In a brief editorial note on the Table of Contents page they outline revisions they plan to make in the upcoming 3rd printing & reach out to readers for additional suggestions of what they would like to see included. On the verso of this page however print runs & dates through the 8th printing in July 1972 are listed so this may be that 8th printing retaining the 2nd printing notice Unlike the softcover book in stiff white wrappers decorated in color that is so familiar to all women over the past five decades this early edition was still on newsprint in black & white with a cover price of $.35. It consists of 3 sections each about 44 pages stapled together on the left in 136 pages a two-page letter from the editors outlining their plans for turning this "course" into a book to be published by Simon & Schuster in the interest of using the publisher's massive distribution network to get it into the hands of as many women as possible far more than the Collective could manage. It became a reality in 1973. The book remains a critical cornerstone in the movement for women's rights & has never been out of print. Extremely scarce in this printing with only 2 copies available in the trade & 2 held by libraries in Germany & the Netherlands as of this writing Nov. 2023. Off-white wrappers show tanning around all edges. Only flaw is a torn triangular section to top edge of front cover 1.25" x 1.25" x .75" with tiny .25" vertical tear to same area on following 2 pages & a few microscopic tears/nicks to same edge. "In May of 1969 as the women's movement was gaining momentum and influence in the Boston area and elsewhere around the country a group of women met during a 'female liberation conference' at Emmanuel College. In a workshop on 'Women and Their Bodies' they shared their experiences with doctors and their frustration at how little they knew about how their bodies worked. The discussions were so provocative and fulfilling that they formed the Doctor's Group the forerunner to the Boston Women's Health Book Collective to find out more about their bodies their lives their sexuality and relationships and to talk with each other about what they learned. They decided to put their knowledge into an accessible format that could be shared and would serve as a model for women to learn about themselves communicate their findings with doctors and challenge the medical establishment to change and improve the care that women receive. In 1970 they worked with the New England Free Press to publish a 193-page course book on stapled newsprint entitled "Women and Their Bodies." The book was revolutionary for its frank talk about sexuality and abortion which was then illegal. The cost: 75 cents. In 1971 they changed the title to 'Our Bodies Our Selves' to emphasize women taking full ownership of their bodies . In 1972 after strenuous debate the group of founding authors decided to publish with a mainstream publisher in order to reach a wider audience. They formally incorporated as the Boston Women's Health Book Collective and negotiated a contract with Simon & Schuster that included a 70 percent clinic discount for low-income women and provision for a U.S. Spanish translation.
