DUNNING Ralph Cheever; illustrated by SIMON Howard:
ROCOCO
Paris: Edward W. Titus The Black Manikin Press. 1926. First edition first printing. First edition first printing. Signed by the author and the artist together with a rare possibly unique original photograph of the author. Publisher's original paper covered boards blue paper label printed in black to the upper board. With 3 tipped in illustrations by Howard Simon. A good or better copy the binding square and firm with chips to the spine tips and rubbing and toning to the extremities. The contents with a few marks to the gutter of page 5 not affecting the text are otherwise clean throughout. Loosely laid in is a rare original photograph of the reclusive author which has a short tear to the left hand side and a little nick to the border at the top. One of 500 copies this copy numbered 495 of the author's first book and one of only a handful of copies signed by Ralph Cheever Dunning to the limitation page. All copies are signed by the artist Howard Simon underneath his first illustration. Although unmarked as such other than a pencilled note by the previous owner Martin Stone this copy is from the collection of the publisher Edward Titus which might explain the presence of the original photograph Martin's note suggests it to be the only known photograph. Detroit native Ralph Cheever Dunning labelled "the living Buddha of Montparnasse" by fellow American expatriate Ford Maddox Ford was a silent wraith-like presence in vital literary Paris in the 1920s. Arriving in Paris around 1905 he dedicated his life to honing a small group of poems using the style language and verse forms of the late Victorian era. While contemporary critics derided his "hopelessly antiquated" philosophy and mode of expression Ezra Pound joined others in championing his work seeing to it that the reluctant poet was published in the most important journals of the day culminating in his winning the Helen Haire Nevinson Prize from Poetry magazine in 1925. More interested in writing poetry than in seeing it published the reclusive opium addict appeared equally unmoved by critics and admirers. Dunning rarely ate and rarely spoke and when he did venture out would be found in the noisiest cafs on the Left Bank clutching a glass of warm milk and a book. Dunning's poetry reflected his own profound death wish emphasising how life is fleeting death permanent. That wish was fulfilled aged 52 when weakened by tuberculosis he simply stopped eating altogether. Provenance: from the library of Martin Stone. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers. Paris: Edward W. 101st Airborne In Vietnam: The "Screaming Eagles"
United Kingdom: Ian Allan 2005. New book 96 pages 100 photos and maps. After World War II the first real action the 101st saw was in July 1965 when the 1st Brigade of the 'Screaming Eagles' was blooded in the Song Con Valley Vietnam. It acted as a rapid reaction force reinforcing American and South Vietnamese forces when necessary becoming expert in rapid helicopter assaults. The 2nd and 3rd Brigades arrived in December 1967 in time to take part in the reaction to the North Vietnamese Tet Offensive. The 101st and the 1st Cavalry were sent in to recapture Hue in a battle that raged for three weeks and was the only extended urban combat of the war. Following Tet the 101st saw continuous combat including fighting on Hill 937 - 'Hamburger Hill' - which was some of the most brutal of the war. The last Army division to leave South Vietnam the 101st spent almost seven years in combat.
