Réimpression parisienne de l'originale parue en 1795 à Saint-Pétersbourg tiré d'un voyage fait en 1794. Cette réimpression est suivie des "observations sur la formation des montagnes", par Pallas, traduites de l'allemand et déjà parues à Paris en 1779 et 1782. London: John Stockdale 1812. 2 volumes 4to pp. xxiii 1 552; iii-xxxii 525; complete with with 52 engraved plates 43 hand-colored 26 folding 29 in-text vignettes 23 hand-colored all by Geissler and three large folding maps; contemporary full calf with an octagonal panel central on all covers within double gilt rules rebacked ca. 1930 in brown calf gilt-decorated spines brown morocco labels lettered in gilt; extremities a bit worn and rubbed but the binding is sound and a few spots and some minor offsetting aside it's internally fine. Cox I p. 199: "Pallas was one of the savants chosen by the St. Petersburg Academy to carry on the work of examining the resources of the far distant parts of the Russian Empire. He left St. Petersburg in 1768 and spent a full six years investigating various districts of Siberia the Urals the Caspian Tobolsk Lake Baikal the Lower Volga etc. His reports on the geology fauna and flora are of great scientific value." His journey extended to the frontiers of China. "Few explorations have been as fruitful as this six years' journey" EB. The translator F. W. Text volumes c. 1794. Some light scuffing along spines and edges of boards; occasional very light spotting; but text volumes are nice and bright indeed! /// Old boards with antiphonal leaf folded over as a cover; atlas volume folio 370x270mm; contains large folding map and 108 plates including large folding map uncut. Atlas volume c. 1802. Boards worn and front hinge split; stain across half-title p.; atlas detached laid-in; extra title-page quire laid-in; uncut edges just the tiniest bit chipped and toned but plates are overall bright and clean. <br/><br/>Over 6 years Pallas visited the Caspian the Altai Mountains Tomsk the Yenisei Tobolsk Lake Baikal Kolyvan and the frontiers of China. The results of his explorations and scientific investigations were of the greatest significance for botany zoology geology geography and ethnology. The narrative of Pallas's travels was first published in German at St. Petersburg in 1771-76 but the French edition incorporates the natural history results of the expedition. Maradan hardcover books
