John Wesley and Methodism. Three items from the papers of Rev. Richard Bartelot: Autograph Letters Signed from J. S. Simon of Wesley Historical Society and J. Crosland of Sutton Bridge; printed programme of Liverpool bi-centenary celebrations.
Crosland's letter on letterhead of Sutton Bridge Wisbech 16 June 1903. Simon's letter on Wesley Historical Society letterhead 22 April 1914. Programme from Liverpool Wesleyan Methodist Council for celebration on 17 June 1903. The three items in fair condition lightly aged and worn. ONE: ALS to Bartelot from 'J. Crosland'. There are postcards printed by 'J. Crosland and Son Post Office Sutton Bridge Wisbech.' 3pp. 12mo. He begins with reference to a Wesley letter which 'has been in the family about 50 years – more rather than less – the family has been connected with Methodism almost from the days of Wesley himself without a break.' He also discusses 'a statue in white parian marble I think it is standing 6 ½ in high Base on which he stands 1 in in full clerical robe – with open book in left hand & the right hand uplifted evidently in the act of addressing the people or preaching.' This has been 'in the family 3 generations at least'. TWO: ALS to Bartelot from Rev. J. S. Simon. 2pp. 4to. He is 'interested in John Wesley's pedigree' and has been in correspondence with 'Mr. Broadley of Bridport' who suggested he should write. He asks for elucidation regarding 'Calamy's statement' going into detail on the question of Wesley's wife's uncle Thomas Fuller. He requests 'light on the subject of the marriage and death of John Westley and on the place of his burial'. THREE: Printed handbill in light blue and red headed: 'The Liverpool Wesleyan Methodist Council. BI-CENTENARY OF WESLEY'S BIRTH 1703 – JUNE 17th – 1903. PROGRAMME'. 1p. 8vo. Includes an organ recital by Dr A. L. Peace and contributions by seven clergymen: Joseph Jackson T. J. Choate E. T. Carrier T. Hughes Owen Roberts H. J. Taylor and Robert Killip. The William Simon Brewery produced some of the finest beer in upstate New York beginning in the late-19th century until the company closed in 1972. Dans le premier ouvrage se trouve aussi une vie d'une célèbre convulsionnaire, Gabrielle Moulère, et des preuves de la guérison miraculeuse de mademoiselle d'Achon. Le second ouvrage, à l'inverse, est une attaque vive contre Louis Basile Carré de Montgeron (1686-1754), ferveur défenseur des Convulsionnaires, et 8 chapitres sont consacrés au Démon : Du pouvoir du Démon sur les être corporels - Examen si le Démon n'use que rarement du pouvoir qu'il a reçu dans sa création - Si le pouvoir du Démon peut s'étendre jusqu'à faire de très-grands prodiges - Continuation du même sujet suivant la doctrine de Saint-Augustin - Si Dieu ne permet que rarement au Démon de faire des prodiges - Des voiles que le Démon peut jeter sur les prodiges qu'il opère - Continuation des voiles que le Démon peut jeter sur ses prodiges, en s'arrêtant à ce qui se passera au temps de l'Ante-Christ - Est-il certain que le Démon ne puisse pas faire des guérisons dans l'ordre des prodiges ? It is complete with the ship wreck exploration conflict with local inhabitants stand off and final rescue by a passing ship. It is a reasonable representation of the Australian continent and its challenges along with a realistic estimation of the importance of mining and irrigation to Australia that "foreshadow what has actually come to pass in modern Australia." Friederich <br /> <br /> The title page is falsely dated 1710. In his deep analyses of Tyssot de Patot and his publications Aubrey Rosenberg has concluded that this 1710 printing with the armillary sphere device on the title page with the base pointing to the left is indeed the first edition and was published between 1714 and 1718. In-12, (1) f. de titre, 242 pp. mal chiffrées 142, (2) ff., veau marbré, dos à nerfs orné, tranches rouges (Reliure de l’époque).Classique de la parfumerie française - néanmoins rare -, ce traité fut composé par Simon Barbe, le plus grand parfumeur du XVIIe siècle qui servit le Dauphin ; paru pour la première fois en 1699, cet ouvrage est un véritable livre de recettes, et donne nombre de consignes techniques à l'intention des gens de métier : gantiers, perruquiers, marchands de liqueurs. Il est divisé en neuf chapitres, détaillant les secrets de la composition des parfums, les différentes sortes de savonnettes, les pommades, les poudres pour les cheveux, les grosses poudres de Violette, les eaux de senteurs, les pastille à brûler, les liqueurs à parfums à la bouche. Et pour cette deuxième édition, "corrigée et largement augmentée" établie par l'imprimeur Claude-Martin Saugrain, un dernier chapitre est consacré à la distillation : alambic, serpentin, bain de vapeur, fumier de marc de raisin...Nouvelle édition, rare, publiée après le nouveau privilège daté du 29 mai 1761 (on ne trouve dans les collections publiques que les éditions de 1699 et 1745). Importante dans l’histoire de la parfumerie, elle parait sans les recettes nouvellement condamnées car utilisant des cosmétiques minéraux et métalliques dangereux. L'approbation signée Guettard, premier médecin du roi, spécifie en effet qu'ont été retranchées « les compositions dans lesquelles il entre de la litarge, du blanc de plond (sic), du sublime corrosif, de l’alun, du nitre ».Bel exemplaire en reliure de l’époque.Ex-libris Kilian Fritsch.Petit manque à la coiffe supérieure.

A utopian novel which was for many years attributed to Bishop Berkeley. The narrative relates a sojourn in the remote African community of Mezorania whose social system supposedly bears ancestral traces of that of the Ancient Egyptians. It is therefore sometimes described as an early Lost Race novel.Inscribed on the title-page: ''Mary Hornyold sic hers - given her by the Author.'' On the front pastedown is the armorial engraved bookplate of Thomas Hornyhold of Blackmore Park.Some creasing to free endpapers an first blank. Hinges cracking but tight. Occasional foxing. Unpublished typescript; 15 leaves typed in German on the recto only clasped at the top corners with manuscript notations and corrections and typed translations in English mounted to 2 pages. SOLD WITH the complete English translation; 17 leaves typed on the recto only staple-bound at top corner with manuscript corrections and notations. A pencil notation indicates that this story may have been a submission to the Bermondsey Book literary magazine edited by Frederick Heath and published December 1923 to May 1930 however we find no record of publication. Heinrich Simon was the grandson of the founder of the Frankfurter Zeitung. He studied philosophy literature and Italian before joining the newspaper in 1906. He was a lively cultural force in Frankfurt famous for his Friday lunches of which Fritz von Unruh -- the German expressionist poet dramatist and novelist -- sometimes took part. Simon was eager to support Unruh and presented him in the Frankfurter Zeitung as one of the leading poets of the day. <br/><br/> n.p. unknown
