Created by cartoonists Joe Simon and Jack Kirby Captain America first appeared in March of 1941. Designed as a patriotic supersoldier the fictional superhero became Timely Comics' most popular superhero during the wartime period. Wearing a costume bearing an American flag motif Captain America often fought the Axis powers of World War II using his indestructible shield.
