This book is part of a series with the general title 'Images of London'. Until the age of photography the only published record of the changing appearance of a city was in engravings and prints. London is rich in such prints but no previous attempt has been made to catalogue them. Nor until this book had anyone reproduced on a thorough and systematic basis the prints of any particular area of London. The first section of the book is a general history of the area. The central section or Gallery reproduces nearly all of the prints of the district up to 1860 and any of special interest thereafter. The final section is the Catalogue. This opens with a succinct but very specific account of how to identify different print types. Narrative by Sion Jenkins Catalogue by Jonathan Ditchburn. Gallery of prints Harriet and Peter George.
