‎Fifth Annual Report of the Directors of the Western Rail-Road Corporation to the Stockholders February 12 1840.‎

‎8vo pamphlet removed dbd 31 pp. Some minor foxing and aging; otherwise very good. Interesting early railroad report to shareholders that provides considerable useful historical information including railroad construction costs and description and costs of engines and pessanger cars. While the title suggests a westward theme much of the construction is along the Connecticut River. Also the schedule of distances in the report seems to focus on Massachusetts and the greater Boston area. S.N. Dickinson,‎

‎First Annual Report of the Directors of the Pennsylvania Rail-Road Company to the Stockholders. October 30 1847.‎

‎8vo pamphlet publishers printed wrappers 20 pp. Crease in the middle corners and extremities chipped a bit small hole in the middle of front wrapper not affecting text wrappers darkened and faded some mild foxing in the margins; otherwise very good. Somewhat typical report to shareholders but this was published a year after the railroad was founded. The company actually shows a surplus of funds and there is a very positive tone concerning future prospects and railroad construction. Interestingly the company points to problems facing other companies who had to borrow money at very high fixed interest rates to to develop their business. Sabin 60358.‎

‎Georgia Railroad ticket for the line torn up by Sherman's troops during the Civil War. "Central Rail Road First Class Savannah to Eden"‎

‎Savannah GA 1840. Very good condition. Pre-Civil War engraved first class railroad ticket "Good for this Day Only" from Savannah to Eden. This line was ultimately torn up in the infamous Savannah Campaign of 1864 by Federal troops who twisted the rails around trees to prevent their re-use. By the end of the campaign the Central had lost 140 miles of track 14 locomotives and 97 railcars. The Central Rail Road and Canal Company was founded in Georgia in 1833; in order to attract capital its name was changed to the Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia. The Central Rail Road was built to join up with the Macon and Western Railroad in Macon; this line between Savannah and Macon was built between 1837 and 1843. ‎Manuscript Ledger Book Containing Various Contracts and Deals between Different Railroad Companies in Massachusetts and New York.‎

‎
Large thick folio 15x10 1/2 bound in soft tan calf maroon morocco corners and spine label marbled endpapers 26 425 111 blank pp. Hinges reinforced with cloth front joint split leather chipped at spine ends and corners are a bit worn light rubbing and finger soiling to contents; else very good. Fascinating piece of railroad memorabilia that documents railroad company mergers deeds for track expansion and other contractual correspondence dated from 1839-1915 chiefly between Massachusetts and New York. Many of the transactions mention concern the Boston and Albany Railroad connecting Boston to Albany. The ledger appears to record events from the original documents. Sometimes it cites the individual who copied the document. While the the dates of documents it refers to go back to the before the mid 19th century these entries were probably done in the late 19th century or early 20th century. The ledger contains over 400 pages of hand-written contract documents most one to three pages long plus 26 pages indexing 166 contracts at the front. Nearly all with Public Notarization as well as signatures of the people involved. These are copies of the originals inked in various highly legible hands. Many of the documents are of the Boston and Albany Railroad which would become part of the New York Central Railroad system.
books‎

Library stamp on back of title page some soiling to wrappers corners nicked and a slight vertical crease. Otherwise very good. Scarce pamphlet offering a view of the building of the transcontinental railroad and some of the challenges it faced including those related to the crossing the Sierra Nevada. The map shows most of the U.S. excluding the southern fringe with the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads connecting just north of Salt Lake City. The map also shows the proposed Southern Pacific Railroad from St. Louis to Southern California. The pamphlet talks about the need for the railroad because of the gold discoveries and the unlimited agricultural potential of the region. The author speculates that California could handle a population of ten million people. Also includes facts and figures about the cost of the railroad. George Brown, Printer,‎

‎Report of the Construction of the Western Rail-Road.‎

‎Large 8vo pamphlet half title stitched 27 pp. Half title instead of formal title page somewhat uncut dbd some tears at edges mild aging and toning; very good. This appears to be part of a House document House No. 32 dated February 27 1839 and presented by William Lincoln. The pamphlet discusses the financial challenges dating back to the late 18th century which prevented the development of transportation systems. While the title suggests a western theme much of the discussion is closer to the original colonies. The author makes a case for rail and other transportation systems by pointing out the benefits of these efforts on real and personal property values. He uses the favorable impact the Erie Canal had on property in New York. It appears that after careful consideration the House Committee voted in favor of the proposal to spend the money $1200000 on the development of the 'so called ' Western Rail-road'.‎

‎Union Pacific Railway Shortest Quickest Safest and Most Popular Transcontinental Line‎

‎Folding train schedule 4 1/2x 9 20 panels large folding map in color. Some browning and aging some separation at the middle fold two of those separations are a few inches three other smaller tears at the middle fold these are repairable a few chips and tears at edge folds. Nice piece of railroad memorabilia with substantial information about rates and schedules. Most of the trains are geared toward the west which gives an idea on the process of opening up this still relatively new part of the country. The map has its flaws but it is sound enough to get a feel for the lines of the Union Pacific. ‎RAILROAD PUBLIC SAFETY PHOTO ARCHIVE. FROMMER Henry G. HARRISON William R. JENSEN Thomas Photographers.‎

‎An exceptional archive of photographs shot and used as evidence in railroad crossing public safety accident lawsuits and criminal cases in the 1920s in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The images depict the evolution of railroad crossing warning signs surrounding areas tracks surrounding conditions and in a couple cases when an automobile was involved.‎

‎Harrington Park Haworth Bogota Jersey City Harrison Irvington Farmingdale & Metuchen NJ & Chester PA: New York Ontario & Western Railway New York Central Railroad Pennsylvania Railroad 1923-1930. Ninety-six silver gelatin photographs many printed on glossy photo paper stock others on thick stock sized from 4.5 x 7 in. up to 11 x 13 in. w/ the majority 8 x 10 in. many linen backed some mounted on linen sheets w/ typescript text below others w/ manuscript annotations w/in the image or on versos many w/ photographer’s stamps or attributions on versos or in lower margin and in one case at the gutter margin on linen-mounted stubs larger images w/ minor chipping & tears some rubbing edgewear a few w/ pin-holes from being mounted as exhibits still a VG grouping w/ most still retaining bright strong contrast. This fascinating archive of original photographs document the many different sites of accidents at railroad crossing through the 1920s in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Historically railroad crossings have been frequent sites of accidents in the United States from before the Civil War into the modern era. In the late 19th-century until 1927 railroad accident legal standards were established by the 1877 case of Continental Improvement Co. v. Stead and later the 1892 Grand Trunk Railway of Canada v. Ives in which the Supreme Court had indicated the traveling public needed to require reasonable care to detect and avoid trains and that the railroad was obligated to give signage and equipment providing reasonable and timely warning. These photographs show that most railroad crossings only featured Railroad Crossing Shanty’s in which the gatekeepers or railroad personnel would flag down and warn drivers when present of approaching trains although as shown by these photos many of them advise that they were unmanned and necessarily pedestrians motorists and bicyclists needed be aware of their own risk. In addition there are many of the photos showing the early “Crossbuck†signs with the railroad crossing signs forming an X and even some by the mid-1920s appear to have rudimentary Cataphote reflectors or “cats eyes†to make the more visible. Included are photos showing the crossing on the New York Ontario & Western Railway Tracks of accidents involving Elmer Glarmer in Harrington Park NJ Sept. 22 1927 in Haworth NJ with George Richards in Dec. 1926 and Arthur Marsilio b. 1908 of Bogota NJ who was the son of a railroad bridge tender with photo showing the impact point on the cow catcher and brest beam of engine #3015. Also shown are photos of a 1920s era International Motor Co. Mack chain-driven truck struck by a Pennsylvania RR locomotive in Jersey City NJ by William R. Harrison losing a load of sewer pipes. In addition there are photos of the intersection in Harrison with factories in the background and identifying typescript mounted on versos of this industrial Newark suburb which was the home of Edison Lamp Works Worthington Pump & Machinery the RCA Co. Peter Hauck Brewery Otis Elevator and others. The very large photos indicate in manuscript they were taken for accidents involving David Cockram b. 1875 screen door salesman and blacksmith and his wife Daisy Cockram b. 1876 killed in Farmingdale NJ in August 9 1924. Others show an accident site at a railroad crossing in Metuchen NJ August 15 1923 with the photos taken later in Dec. 123 in the case of Harry Fisher. See: Philip Goldstein W.R. This intriguing grouping opens with a letter from the Union Pacific Dept. of Traffic offices in Omaha requesting photos and floor plan of each Union Pacific office in the system including that of E.S. Farrell in Bend Oregon during World War II. To meet this requirement Farrell secured eight different photos of the office interior and exterior as well as furnishings along with a manuscript blueprint mapping out all the principal aspects of the offices. Two of the images show the large double-sided porcelain Union Pacific sign hanging from a wrought iron bracket painted glass sign and interior advertising. The office furnishings are pine and fir bookshelves chairs desks filing cabinets and more. ‎Map of the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad and its Connections‎

‎Chicago: Chicago Evening Journal 1878. Fine folding lithographed pocket map printed on pink paper 20 x 30inches with an inset of the Western States and Territories one or two separations at folds. A fine folding map and timetable for the Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad system The Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad the official name of the Burlington Route started from humble beginnings February 12 1849 in Aurora Illinois. On September 2 1850 the first train chugged its uncertain way over six miles from Batavia Illinois north to Turner Junction and then eastward to Chicago over the tracks of the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad. The Burlington as it came to be known completed its own line from Aurora to Chicago in 1864 and the following year had the distinction of operating the first train into the newly-opened Union Stock Yards. The railroad across Iowa was the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad incorporated in Burlington in 1852. Operations began over the first few miles of track on New Year's Day 1856. The road reached Ottumwa by 1857 through Murray in the fall of 1858 and was completed to the Missouri River in November 1869. The trains of that day were pulled by small wood-burning locomotives only capable of pulling a dozen or so cars. The passenger cars were built of wood and were not very comfortable for the traveler. In 1868 the CB&Q completed bridges over the Mississippi both at Burlington and Quincy giving the railroad through connections with the B&MR in Iowa and the Hannibal & St Joseph Railroad in Missouri Burlington Route Historical society online. This is a large map showing the route and connecting lines centered on Chicago extending to Bangor and Quebec and westward to Denver and south to Dallas Houston San Antonio and Galveston. Each railroad is named with hundreds of rail stations located. At lower right is the large "Map of the Western States and Territories" which extends to Olympia Portland San Francisco Los Angeles and Fort Yuma. Extensive timetable on the verso of the map also advertisements for Sleeping Cars by the Pullman Company information for Emigrants etc. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.
