‎Report of the Engineers of the Philadelphia and Reading Rail Road Company with Accompanying Documents…‎

‎8vo pamphlet removed dbd 14 pp. Maybe lacking wrappers but otherwise complete number stamped on title ink number on title normal aging and foxing; otherwise very good.Scarce early railroad title that reports on the completion of a railroad between Reading and Norristown and the construction of a railroad between Norristown and Philadelphia. The report indicates that the amount of freight shipped at that point was not significant but they expected a significant increase with the completion of the next part of the railroad. Information on costs and revenues are provided as well as estimates on the cost of transporting coal to Philadelphia from the coal regions. John G. Clark,‎

‎Report of the Construction of the Western Rail-Road.‎

‎
Large 8vo pamphlet half title stitched 27 pp. Half title instead of formal title page somewhat uncut dbd some tears at edges mild aging and toning; very good. This appears to be part of a House document House No. 32 dated February 27 1839 and presented by William Lincoln. The pamphlet discusses the financial challenges dating back to the late 18th century which prevented the development of transportation systems. While the title suggests a western theme much of the discussion is closer to the original colonies. The author makes a case for rail and other transportation systems by pointing out the benefits of these efforts on real and personal property values. He uses the favorable impact the Erie Canal had on property in New York. It appears that after careful consideration the House Committee voted in favor of the proposal to spend the money $1200000 on the development of the 'so called ' Western Rail-road'.
‎

‎Whitney's Railroad to the Pacific To accompany bil H.R. No.156.‎

‎8vo pamphlet later paper wrappers two folding maps 117 2 pp. Minor foxing and browning a bit of staining in the margins mostly maps also have the staining in margins but are in great condition otherwise; overall very good. The goal of this bill in the House of Representatives was to connect the Atlantic and Pacific with a railroad. Specifically this undertaking was to construct a railroad and electric telegraph from the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean. Whitney seems to have played a critical role in this process and started to work on the railroad project as early as 1841. The pamphlet contains a lot of information on early railroad issues especially imports and exports.‎

‎[RAILROADS -- PHOTO ALBUM]. [GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY].‎

‎A remarkable Edwardian photo album filled with 38 albumen and silver gelatin images of Great Western Railway Express steam locomotives designed and purchased by William Dean and George Jackson Churchward at the beginning of the 20th Century.‎

‎London England: Great Western Railway ca. 1905. Oblong 4to. 11 x 8 in. 48 pp unpaginated. on thick card stock all leaves mounted on linen hinges w/ 38 original albumen & silver gelatin photographs mounted all sized from 6 x 8.25 in. and all with very strong contrast and bright images. Contemporary embossed green cloth over beveled boards ruling in blind minor shelfwear light bumping to couple corners very light occasional interior toning still NF exemplar. This exceptional Edwardian factory photo album offers contemporary images of several classes of steam locomotives purchased and operated by the Great Western Railway under the direction of both William Dean and G.J. Churchward. The images primarily focus on the 4-4-0 Express engines including the “City Class†‘Badminton Class†GWR 4100 “Atbara Class†“Bulldog Class†and the “Saint Class.†Photos depict such storied locomotives as the William Dean No. 100 built in 1902 and fore-runner of the 4-6-0 locomotives on the Great Western Railway which were 2-cylinder machines built with parallel boilers; the Vanguard 4-4-0 later renamed Cunard was designed at behest of Churchward and based on the William Dean design with coned boilers and by 1905 19 further similar locomotives had been purchased. Also present is a photo of the La France No. 102 a 4-4-2 locomotive built in 1903 by Societe Alsacienne de Construction Mecaniques Works Number 5409 purchased by Churchward to evaluate French locomotive engines and compounding practices. In actuality the La France did not offer any significant improvement to Albion No. 171 Churchward’s prototype 4-6-0. The “City Class†locomotives are represented here by the Bath No. 3433 Bristol No. 3435 Birmingham No. 3434 Chester No. 3436 and London 3439 all constructed in 1903 and most remaining in service until 1929-1931. The “Atbara Class†4-4-0 locomotives were built from 1898-1905 and these used names in the public eye during Great Britain’s colonial wars but all were relegated to non-express following 1922. Represented in these photos are the Kitchener No. 3377 a 4-4-0 built in 1900 Kimberley No. 3379 Ladysmith No. 3380 Ondurman No. 3384 Brisbane No. 3396 and Cape Town No. 3397. Two photos show the tragic Mafeking No. 3382 which was withdrawn from service in Sept. 1911 after a severe accident at Henley-in-Arden with both images showing the same 4-4-0 configuration. The “Bulldog Class†engines feature the Albert Brassey No. 3414 built in 1902 and the Reading No. 3449 built in Oct. 1903 and later renumbered 3387. The “Saint Class†locomotives designed by G.J. Churchward often have the 4-4-2 configuration before many were rebuilt from 1907-1912 as 4-6-0 Express Locomotives. These include the Albion Quicksilver Robins Bolitho Lord Palmer Winterstroke Robertson Kirkland the Coeur de Lion and the Lalla Rookh. Of additional interest are the Nos. 103 “President†and 104 “Alliance†built by French de Glehn-du Bosquet as 4-cylinder locomotives purchased in 1905 and similar to the Paris-Orleans 3001 Class. One of the photos shows the Kennet No. 3015 which was the express locomotive involved in the June 16 1900 Slough Rail Accident which resulted in killing 5 passengers and injuring over 35. The accident also forced the adoption of improved vacuum brake systems on locomotives and rolling stock in the United Kingdom. ‎[RAILROADS -- AMERICAN RAILWAY EXPRESS & RAILWAY EXPRESS AGENCY ARCHIVE].‎

‎An unusual archive of original sales literature promotional in-house sales magazines manuals documents labels labor agreements flyers handbooks and more for the famed Big Green shipping service which preceded UPS FedEX DHL and many others before the bankruptcy in the 1970’s.‎

‎New York San Francisco CA Portland & Baker OR Coeur d’Alene ID & Seattle WA: American Railway Express Co. Railway Express Agency Co. Washington-Alaska-Yukon Division Pacific-Mountain Division 1919-1965. Archive with over 100 separate pieces. Approx. 1400 pp sections leaves individual items paginated & unpaginated numbered & unnumbered sections separately and more printed on assorted paper stocks many w/ colour-tinting. Individual items largely all sleeved in mylar and preserved in 3-ring binders some items in their original bindings as found including large Folio sample catalogue which is an original re-purposing of a large Christmas greeting card catalogue as well as others in their original post-binders softcovers or more detailed list available upon request. This informative archive of sales literature and in-house forms documents and publications for the Western and Pacific Divisions of the storied Railway Express Co. whose Big Green trucks with the red emblems shipped a valuable package or money anywhere in the world prior to the 1970’s. They specialized in efficiently shipping daily thousands of perishables fragile items and things the customer wished picked up at their home and then traveling across the company’s vast rail network to San Francisco Toledo Bremerhaven Germany Okinawa Japan and further. This material documents the period of transition by the American Railway Express Co. which had been formed during World War I by combining the Great Northern Express Northern Express Western Express Adams Express American Express Wells Fargo and Southern Express into one giant company. In 1929 69 U.S. railroads organized the Railway Express Agency and purchased the American Railway Express Co. and its’ vast network to be all folded into the same company with each of the railroads owning 1000 shares of stock. This archive encompasses all of the labels forms documents and sales literature in order to train operate and thrive as a Railway Express Agent. Not only do the labels and documents specifically detail how to pack the railcars and trucks make claims on damaged materials they even include specific items such as 21 mostly originally sealed safe combinations & keys originally held and secured by the Money Dept. of the Railway Express Agency. Two “Record of Personal Property†logs document the sales of obsolete equipment surplus horses carriages wagons motorized trucks and railcars from the Nampa ID depot. Also present is a fascinating receipt book still preserving all the original 50 Foreign Money Orders sent as remittances from 1946-1957 by immigrants co-workers aid workers as well as family and friends many with original TLS and ALS receipts associated with the original senders. The 1919 “Route Directory†provides very scarce original documentation of the network of depots operated by the Express Company across Idaho Montana Oregon & Washington during and just after World War I when the business was in the transition towards the American Railway Express Co. many of the rail stations no longer operable or in existence. The sales promotion and development in-house magazines flyers and bulletins all offer essential tips on how agents during the Great Depression and beyond could raise sales and cultivate their promotional campaigns. They encouraged regular meetings elevating their “Live Wires†to lead with rousing sales pitches and promoting methods on raising the company’s presence in the “Private House Market†as well as “Selective selling for the Summer slump.†In addition there are small broadsides flyers and tips on advising how to ship baby chicks bees taking care that bee hives arrive intact and ready for use shipping apples & pears from Oregon Washington Idaho & Montana farmers and packing houses as well as handling fragile glass packages. It is very apparent when reading through all of the material that the American Railway Express followed by the Railway Express ran a very tight ship with active auditing departments specific forms for nearly everything and very tight controls over who could enter and operate within their secure shipping railcars. Almost none of these original labels documents periodicals or other in-house publications appear in any institutional collections; Worldcat locates a few similar titles from the 1940’s through 1950’s at Stanford Univ. of Missouri St. Louis Northwestern and the Hagley. ‎[RAILWAY EPHEMERA | KAWARTHA LAKES]‎

‎Grand Trunk Railway Ticket Requisition Book from the Lakefield Ontario Station Detailing Passenger Routes and Fares 1887-1897
‎

‎Lakefield Ontario Canada: Grand Trunk Railway 1887-1897. First Edition. Hardcover. Oblong octavo 28 x 15 cm. Bound in three-quarters leather with marbled paper-covered boards. A printed paper title label reading "G. T. R. / Ticket Requisition Book" is affixed to the front board. The book consists of unnumbered leaves each perforated vertically to create a stub and a removable requisition form. The left-hand portion the stub which remained in the book is divided into five columns: To What Station Class Description Quantity Required Quantity Received. The right-hand portion which was detached and sent to the Audit Department is divided into seven columns for inventory and supply: To What Station Class Description Last Number Issued Last Progressive Number on Hand Tickets on Hand Quantity Supplied. Approximately three-quarters of the leaves have been used with the remaining quarter at the rear being clean and unused. Fair only though internally very good. Both front and rear boards are detached. The text-block however remains sound and tightly sewn. The three-quarters leather spine and corners are heavily worn rubbed and scuffed. The paper title label remains intact and legible. Internally the manuscript entries are clear and legible throughout with the final quarter of unused leaves are remaining remarkably clean and bright for their age. A complete and rich primary source document despite the binding flaws.

¶ A rare survival of the mundane yet essential paperwork which powered one of Canada's most important railway network vital for commerce tourism and settlement in the Kawartha Lakes region. The manuscript requisitions dating from January 20 1887 to April 5 1897 provide a remarkable ten year window into the station's activities. All are dated in manuscript with some requisitions marked "Nil" each tracking the regular flow of passengers along the line connecting the region to commercial centres such as Peterborough and Toronto etc. More significantly entries record period fares and charges for additional baggage among other details. A rare and highly ephemeral primary source for the history of the Kawartha region and to the railway line's role in connecting rural Canada.
Grand Trunk Railway hardcover‎
