Goldkuste Ghana a The Gold Coast Railway:
Album mit 100 Original-Photographien über die Konstruktion der Östlichen Linie der Staatlichen Gold Küsten Eisenbahn in Ghana von Accra nach Nsawam. Aus der Bibliothek von „The Railway Man“ Eric Sutherland Lomax 1919-2012.
1909-1910. Folio ca. 375x27 cm. 30 card stock leaves 4 blank. 100 mounted gelatin silver prints all but six are ca. 15x20 cm 5 x 8 in or slightly smaller; with six smaller images ca. 11x155 cm 4 x 6 in. All but one of the images captioned either in negative or on the mounts in white ink. Original brown half morocco album with green cloth boards and gilt tooled decorative borders on the spine and corners; decorative paper endpapers; all edges gilt. Extremities of album with some mild wear but the images are bright and strong with very good tonal quality. Overall a very good album. Historically interesting collection of evocative original photos showing the construction and the first runs on the Gold Coast Government Railway modern Ghana Railway Co. from Accra to Nsawam. The album comes from the library of a British army officer and railway engineer Eric Lomax known for his book “The Railway Man†about his experiences when building the Burma-Siam Railway as a POW in Japanese custody during WWII. In the 1950s Lomax was involved in the construction of the Ghana Railway branch line from Accra to Tema Harbour which explains his interest in this album. His experiences as a POW were made into a 2013 feature film titled "Railway Man" which starred Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman in the main roles. The album opens with three photos from the special ceremony marking the start of the railway construction in early 1909 featuring Sir John Pickersgill Rodger1851-1910 British Governor of the Gold Coast in March 1904 – September 1910 his wife and a West African noble couple wearing European dress; the railway engineer Mr. Salter is shown “addressing the Governor.†Over sixty photos documents the railway construction: various works on the line clearing through the forest and Ensaki swamp building banks carrying water for concrete by women in baskets on their heads cutting trees burning scrub establishing rails and sleepers packing ballasting et al.; engineers’ and labourers’ bungalows and camps Mr. Harrison’s camp Men’s bungalow Mr. Grey’s bungalow Michelletti’s Camp in forest et al.; “Culvert crossed with cage of wood sleepers & rail girdersâ€; the pavilion erected at Nsawam station for the special luncheon for the Governor in January 1910 marking the completion of the line; the Adjabeng lodge including two group portraits of the engineers supervising the construction names captioned: J.E. Etlinger G.M. Harris C.A. Norris J.E. Talland A. J. Salter J.D. Robb; Accra station main building Senior Officers’ and 2nd class quarters engine shed; rails damaged in flood on the distance of 4-5- miles; views of the Dome Station Abokobi District of the Greater Accra Region Nsawam Station; completed Ensaki Bridge; Pom Pom 20 ft Bridge; Pokoasi village on the Insuam Road Swanzy & Co. House and Store in Insuam active in West Africa since 1789 was the largest trading company on the Gold Coast. Twenty-four images depict the inauguration of the railway at the Accra Station on the 27th of August 1910 and include: views of the Kibbi Road and the triumphal arch next to the station general view of the inaugural enclosure and its European and native sides a group of native chiefs with attendants and state umbrellas arrival of the governor to the station Mr. Salter reading address and the Governor replying the address Departure of inaugural train from Accra on August 28th 1910 several views of the Nsawam station general view with the train goods’ shed ladies palm house several views of the festive luncheon with the Governor and his wife Mr. Salter and other officials of the colony departure of the train from Nsawam to Accra British passengers looking out the windows of the third class car a group portrait of “Mr. Murphey’s staff August 1910â€. There are also nine interesting photos showing a visit of native chiefs to Nsawam on September 11th 1910: scenes of “entraining at Accra†and arrival at Nsawam crowd at the Nsawam Station group portraits of the chiefs of Accra Jamestown Nsawam Sakyikom “leaving Nsawam for Accra†a view of the Amasama station. Overall a very interesting historically important album. “The expanding economy and the concomitant increase in cocoa production and mining necessitated improvement in roads harbours and railways. <…> The biggest revolution in transportation was the construction of a deep-water harbor at Takoradi and the construction of railway lines. In 1898 the West Coast railway line began at Secondi. The line reached Tarkwa in May 1901 Obuasi in December 1902 and Kumasi in October 1904. In 1904 the railway line carried 91000 passengers. In 1912 the Eastern Line from Accra ended at Mangoase. The Accra-Kumasi started in 1909 and abandoned during the war was completed in 1923 and by 1956 Takoradi was linked to Accra by rail. The rapid development of mining and railways brought about a considerable inflow of capital and encouraged exports between 1892 and 1910. Motor cars had been introduced in 1909 but it was not until the use of the light Ford Chassis that a veritable transportation revolution took place in the Gold Coast†Abaka E. Ghana Republic of Gold Coast: Colonial Period: Economy/ Encyclopedia of African History. Vol. 1. New York 2005 p. 571. hardcover
