Railroad Iowa Broadside
ARTICLES OF INCORPORATION OF THE COON VALLEY RAILROAD CO. Caption title
NP: np 1868. Broadside. 30 x 17.5 cm. Text in three columns signed in type by six officers of the corporation. Margins cropped very close touching the bottom line of text in each column with slight loss. An ink notation on verso has migrated through faintly to recto. The company to be headquartered at Adel Dallas Co. west of Des Moines apparently never got off the ground. The History of Dallas County 1879 mentions only two other railroads in Adel Township. The purpose of the Coon Valley Railroad Company was to construct a line from Adel along the Raccoon River Valley to Van Meter Iowa a distance of about 6 or 7 miles connecting there with the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific line. Operations were to commence on December 4 1868. Seven directors are named: F.S. Graham; Benjamin Greene; Era Willard; J.R. Van Meter; Emanuel Goughnour; William A. Wilson; and James B. Brenton Brenton's name does not appear with the other typed signatures at the end of the broadside possibly trimmed. Joseph H. Strong is to be Secretary and Treasurer. The History of Dallas County states that Adel the county seat was laid out in 1847. Joseph H. Strong built a grist-mill there in 1856 and Benjamin Greene had a vineyard as well as thirty acres in fruit trees. No publications relating to the Coon Valley Railroad found in OCLC. WE WILL HAVE A RAILROAD CATALOG LATER IN THE SUMMER. LET US KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE AN EMAIL COPY.

np unknown

RAILROAD MAP
Ensign Bridgman & Fanning's Railroad Map of the United States showing the Depots and Stations.
New York: W. S. Barnard 1856. Folding lithographed pocket map 31 x 34 inches with a large inset of New England lower right and keys to the railroads lower middle right with original hand-colour in outline some browning and separations at folds particularly along the right-hand edge. Original red cloth gilt a bit worn. Published before the completion of a trans-continental railroad and extending west only as far as the western boundaries of Missouri Iowa Arkansas and Louisiana but showing the routes of a staggering 18 individual railroads in New England and 77 in the rest of the United States. The Notice reads: "The Publishers of the map intend Printing small Editions at a time in order that additions may be made as Railroads are completed. They will feel under obligations to contractors superintendents & others who will forward to their address reliable information respected proposed and completed railroads." The mid 19th-century was a time of great expansion in the railroad industry and railroad maps represent an important historical record of the growth of travel and settlement as well as the development of industry and agriculture in the United States. "Railways were introduced in England in the seventeenth century as a way to reduce friction in moving heavily loaded wheeled vehicles. The first North American "gravity road" as it was called was erected in 1764 for military purposes at the Niagara portage in Lewiston New York. The builder was Capt. John Montressor a British engineer known to students of historical cartography as a mapmaker. The earliest survey map in the United States that shows a commercial "tramroad" was drawn in Pennsylvania in October 1809 by John Thomson and was entitled "Draft Exhibiting . . . the Railroad as Contemplated by Thomas Leiper Esq. From His Stone Saw-Mill and Quarries on Crum Creek to His Landing on Ridley Creek.". The earliest printed map in the collections of the Library of Congress based on government surveys conducted for a state-owned railroad is "Map of the Country Embracing the Various Routes Surveyed for the Western & Atlantic Rail Road of Georgia 1837".The possibility of railroads connecting the Atlantic and Pacific coasts was discussed in the Congress even before the treaty with England which settled the question of the Oregon boundary in 1846. The Railroad Act of 1862 put government support behind the transcontinental railroad and helped create the Union Pacific Railroad which subsequently joined with the Central Pacific at Promontory Utah on May 10 1869 and signaled the linking of the continent" Library of Congress online. Ensign Bridgman and Fanning were one of several important and successful New York publishers of maps and engraved views which flourished in the middle of the 19th-century. Timothy and Edward Ensign B.W. Thayer Bridgman Humphrey Phelps and Fanning together and separately published a number of popular views plans guides and maps of the United States New York State and New York City in several different formats. New York: W. S. Barnard, 1856. hardcover
