The Boy's Own Paper. 1900. Chromolithograph 10 3/4 x 28 inches four folds as issued very good condition: short repaired splits at two folds. A striking circa 1900 chromolithograph of "Main Line Express Engines." Vibrant colors; print in excellent condition. Descriptive text accompanies the print. An entry by the British Science Museum on their web site ingenious.org states: "Colour photographs did not become widely available until the invention of the Kodachrome process in the 1930s. For many years enthusiasts had to be content with monochrome images that depicted splendid railway liveries in dull shades of grey. To meet a growing market for colour railway images an artist called Thomas Rudd created hand-tinted oil paintings based on partially exposed photograph prints. Calling himself ‘F Moore’ he accurately reproduced the colours of the original vehicles while carefully removing any unwanted features such as telegraph poles or people. Over the course of thirty-six years between 1897 and 1933 Rudd and his colleagues completed over 600 paintings under the name of F Moore many of them appearing as postcards or in publications like The Locomotive Magazine and The Boy’s Own Paper." This circa 1900 chromolithograph is a striking example of Rudd's craftmanship. see ingenious.org.uk Use search term: Thomas Rudd . The Boy's Own Paper. unknown
