‎Nach ersten Überlegungen im Jahr 1845, eine Eisenbahn von Wiesbaden über den Westerwald nach Deutz zu führen, für die der belgische Ingenieur François Splingard (1810-1884) erste Pläne lieferte, wurde die bereits bestehende Köln-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft 1853 vom Preussischen Staat beauftragt eine abweichende Verbindung zwischen Deutz und Giessen, wo der Anschluss an die Main-Weser-Bahn hergestellt werden sollte, auszuführen. "Die Bedeutung dieser Bahnverbindung lag in ihrer Anfangszeit darin, daß sie bis zum Bau der Rheintalstrecken den einzigen [direkten] Schienenweg zwischen West- und Süddeutschland darstellte." (Eckert) Die vorliegende Dokumentation beschreibt diese Strecke inklusive einer Zweigbahn von Betzdorf nach Siegen, die die Montan-Industrie im Sieg-, Dill- u. Lahntal mit den Hüttenwerken im Rheintal in eine direkte Verbindung setzt. Zwischen Deutz und Köln wurde die Verbindung zum linken Rheinufer durch die 1859 eröffnete Kölner Brücke gewährleistet. Der Text enthält eine ausführliche Beschreibung aller technischen Arbeiten inkl. dem Bau von 57 größeren Brücken (meist über die Sieg), 13 Tunnelbauten, den 24 Bahnhöfen sowie den Reparatur-Werkstätten für Wagen in Deutzerfeld u. Lokomotiven in Betzdorf. - Die Tafeln enthalten Pläne, Brückendarstellungen, -details u. -grundrisse, Tunnelportale, Oberbaudetails, Pläne der Bahnhöfe in Deutz, Betzdorf, Siegen, Wetzlar, Giessen etc., Ansichten der Bahnhöfe in Siegen, Dillenburg, Wetzlar etc. sowie Pläne u. Darstellungen der Werkstätten. - Der dekorative Titel mit 9 Ortsansichten sowie den Darstellungen je eines Berg- u. eines Hüttenmannes stammt wie auch die detailliert ausgeführten u. sehr fein gearbeiteten Tafeln von Jakob Scheiner (1821-1911). Dieser hatte beim Bergamt in Siegen gearbeitet, 1840 eine Ausbildung zum Lithographen begonnen u. 1849 in Siegen eine Lith. Anstalt gegründet. Ab 1854 war er "in Köln bei der Köln-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft als Zeichner u. Architekturmaler tätig." (Renkhoff: Nass.
