London: McCorquodale & Co. Limited 1896. First edition of this elusive yet important publication. Quarto 7 x 9 7/8 inches. 46 2 ad for the photographer of the book Fred. Ahrle and printer's slug. pp. including 15 full page photographic illustrations by Ahrle and 5 double page plates the first one is a map printed in gold of the railway route used as a frontispiece and one is an gradient diagram and the remainder are plans. Publisher's flexible scarlet cloth with large gilt cover lettering along with the device of the railway. Aside from a couple of ink drops on the corner an exemplary copy. Only a handful of copies located by OCLC. and no copies have appeared at auction according to RBH.The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is the first and foremost instance of a mountain passenger railway. Opened in 1881 it introduced bold and imaginative engineering approaches to the challenge of rail links on a hilly terrain of excellent beauty this is the first guide book to this fabled railway.The settlement at Darjeeling really began in 1828 with British interest. By 1835 it was separated from Sikkim for establishing a Sanatorium for the invalid servants of the East India Company. It then consisted of a monastery on observatory hill clustered with about 20 huts and a population of about 100 people. Planning began in 1839 to lay out the Darjeeling town and construct a hill road connecting Siliguri Pankhabari Kurseong and Darjeeling. At the same time evolution of hotels began the first being The Darjeeling Family Hotel’s followed by other hotels. By 1840 Darjeeling town had about 30 buildings and a few respectable houses.I n the year 1878 Franklin Prestage Agent of the Eastern Bengal Railway foresaw the utility of a rail link between the hills of Darjeeling and the plains. His scheme was mainly driven by hard economic considerations viz. the huge difference in the cost of essential commodities between Darjeeling and Siliguri the need to carry out tea for export and the inability of the existing road to handle the growing traffic. He submitted a scheme for the construction of a two feet gauge railway line from Siliguri to Darjeeling.In a detailed scheme submitted to the Government of Bengal and approved by the Lt. Governor Sir Ashley Eden he pointed out how a railway could substantially reduce the cost of transport between Darjeeling and the plains. Rice which sold at 98 a ton at Siliguri Cost 238 at Darjeeling! He was also convinced that the cost of construction of the 2 feet gauge rail-line would not be prohibitive and locomotives small but powerful enough to climb steep gradients could be designed Prestage received final sanction for his project on April 8 1879 and formed the Darjeeling Steam Tramway Co. However the idea of operating the line as a steam tramway was soon abandoned and on September 15 1881 the company adopted the designation of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Co. DHR which remained effective until it was taken over by the Government of free India on October 20 1948. Pawel Primer evidently served as an engineer on the proposed railroad and this manuscript map was likely an addenda to a report issued to solicit investment in the project. The BNF holds two manuscript plans by Primer relating to archaeological sites. unknown

All but the Twenty-seventh and the Thirty-fourth Reports have large folding maps bound in at rear of report. Original printed wrappers and all bound together in a stabbed-and-sewn black cloth binder. Very good.The Northern Pacific Railway reporting mark NP was a transcontinental railroad that operated across the northern tier of the western United States from Minnesota to the Pacific Northwest. It was approved by Congress in 1864 and given nearly forty million acres 62000 sq mi; 160000 km2 of land grants which it used to raise money in Europe for construction. Construction began in 1870 and the main line opened all the way from the Great Lakes to the Pacific when former President Ulysses S. Grant drove in the final "golden spike" in western Montana on September 8 1883. The railroad had about 6800 miles 10900 km of track and served a large area including extensive trackage in the states of Idaho Minnesota Montana North Dakota Oregon Washington and Wisconsin. In addition the NP had an international branch to Winnipeg Manitoba Canada. The main activities were shipping wheat and other farm products cattle timber and minerals; bringing in consumer goods transporting passengers; and selling land. The Northern Pacific merged with other lines in 1970 to form the Burlington Northern Railroad which in turn merged with the Santa Fe to become the BNSF Railway in 1996. Large dark red leatherette binder housing 54 8x10 photos often accompanied by the original negative marked INVESTIGATION on title sheet from the Pittsburgh law firm McArdle Harrington Feeney & McLaughlin seemingly detailing safety hazards of mainly PA Railroad cars including a few interior shots and some of the train yards showing closeup shots of rust corrosion cracks warping and other issues. McArdle Harrington Feeney & McLaughlin was a well known firm that often was employed by plaintiffs against railroad companies in cases involving personal injury. This may be one of the firm's exhibits used in the case Mignona vs. PA Railroad from 1964 but there are several other possibilities -- all late '50s and early '60s. Timetable "No. 4" which "Takes Effect Sunday May 7th 1882 at 12 o'clock Noon" and is meant "For the Government and Information of Employes only" containing two columns headed "Trains Going West" and "Trains Going East" showing all stops for both freight and passenger trains between Milwaukee and Madison Wisconsin. Signed in large type at the bottom by J.D. Layng as General Superintendent C.A. Swineford as Superintendent and Wm. F. Fitch as Assistant Superintendent. Rare to find in ANY condition given its inherent fragility much less this attractive condition. Newly and archivally framed under UV-filtering glass with a single archival cream matte and 3/4" thick dark wood and antiqued gold frame overall dimensions 18" X 12½" -- giving it a superb period feel. unknown

Archive of Material Concerning Railroad Wreck Near Buttsville New Jersey 1893
1893. Manuscript. Snall archive of material concerning injuries allegedly sustained in a railway accident near Buttsville New Jersey March 3rd 1893. There are three sest of documents: 1 three-page typescript legal complaint filed in U.S. Circuit Court for the Southern Distirct of New York by Charles F. Lothrop against the Lehigh and Hudson River Railway Comapny. The plaintiff charges the railroad with negligence in causing a collision from which Lothrop suffered various injuries. 2 five-page legal sized typescript report of H.K. Bradner M.D. April 1894 regarding the alleged injuries of John Drum and Charles Lothrop suffered in the wreck. Dr. Bradner called upon a Salem Massachusetts doctor who was also aboard the train and who had treated the plaintiffs Drum and Lothrop and who stated that he believed they were not much hurt. There is also a report of Bradner's interview with Drum and an interview with another doctor who had examined Lothrop who also clearly thought Lothrop was exaggerating his injuries. Hand notations in red ink appear throughout; 3 14-page manuscript transcribing interviews with several persons including passengers and railroad employees concerning the accident. Dated April 17 1894. Staple bound final leaf coming loose at two of the staples. All documents in sound clean intact condition. A fine and unusual grouping of materials only items #1 and #2 dated and last three items of earlier vintage. Invitation to attend opening of a new railroad line running between Little Piney and Lebanon Missouri. Signed by in ink at the close by the South Pacific Railroad Company president FRANCIS B. HAYES 1810-84 and below this by its resident and managing director ANDREW PEIRCE JR. -. Choice and attractive and scarce signed by this railroad's two major figures. This company merged into the Atlantic & Pacific in 1870. unknown

Laid in loose are 1 5.5 x 9.5-inch cyanotype photo print of a locomotive works and 1 vintage 6 x 8.5-inch silver print photograph of a coal-fired locomotive and crew. Also laid in is a typed letter dated San Francisco July 3 1929 signed J. N. Clark to Mr. O. B. Schoenky presenting this album. Dated ink stamp recording receipt of Southern Pacific Co. Los Angeles Cal. July 5 1929 at top of sheet. Both sender and recipient are pictured in the management portraits portion of the album. Two Original Albumen Photographs of Snow Clearing in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
San Francisco: Southern Pacific Co. ca. 1890. Two original albumen photographs taken by a staff photographer for the Southern Pacific Railroad Company. Each photograph is 8 1/8 x 5 7/8 inches. Both are captioned and mounted on original boards with gilt edges. The first entitled 'Rotary Snow Plow in Action' and the second 'Snow Shovelling at Cascade'. Each photo shows a large group of men working on removing snow from the tracks. The Cascade mentioned is probably Cascade Trestle near Truckee although it is conceivable that it is Cascade Summit Oregon. Southern Pacific Co. hardcover

Two Annual Passes for the International and Great Northern Railroad Company.
Houston: International and Great Northern Railroad Company. 1910 & 1911. Two annual passes 4 x 2 1/2 inches each made out to W. L. Gill who was the secretary of the Southwestern Freight Association and thus rated free passes. Signed on the verso by J. B. Haefer. Very good."The International-Great Northern Railroad Company was a major component of the Missouri Pacific lines in Texas. The railroad was formed on September 30 1873 by the consolidation of the International Railroad Company and the Houston and Great Northern Railroad. The Houston and Great Northern was chartered on October 22 1866 by the first legislature to meet after the Civil War and was backed by eastern and local capital. At the time of the merger the Houston and Great Northern owned 252 miles of track between Houston and Palestine between Houston and East Columbia with branches from Phelps to Huntsville and between Troup and Mineola. The mileage of the Houston and Great Northern included the former Houston Tap and Brazoria Railroad and the Huntsville Branch Railway which had been merged on May 8 1873. The International was chartered on August 5 1870 and at the time of the consolidation operated 177 miles from Hearne to Longview. Despite the financial panic of 1873 the consolidated company continued to slowly expand reaching Rockdale in 1874 and Austin on December 28 1876. Building resumed in 1880 and the following year the railroad reached San Antonio and Laredo on December 1 1881. On August 5 1879 the International and Great Northern acquired the Georgetown Railroad Company at foreclosure and merged the latter company on June 2 1882. The Henderson and Overton Branch Railroad Company was acquired on September 27 1880. Although operated as a part of the International and Great Northern the Henderson and Overton Branch was not consolidated until August 31 1911. Jay Gould acquired control of the International and Great Northern in December 1880. The company was leased to the Missouri Kansas and Texas Railway Company another Gould company for ninety-nine years on June 1 1881 but the lease was canceled on March 2 1888 and the railroad was again operated by its own organization. The company owned 756 miles of track at the end of 1882 and did not increase mileage until after 1900. On May 1 1901 the International and Great Northern merged the Calvert Waco and Brazos Valley Railroad Company. The latter company had built sixty-six miles of a line between Spring just north of Houston and Fort Worth. The Fort Worth line was completed in 1902 by the International and Great Northern. The following year a forty-five-mile branch was built between Navasota and Madisonville. In that year the railroad also acquired the Houston Oaklawn and Magnolia Park Railway Company. The company again entered receivership on February 27 1908. A new company the International and Great Northern Railway Company was chartered on August 10 1911 and bought the old company at foreclosure on August 31 1911. At this time the Henderson and Overton Branch was also consolidated giving the International and Great Northern its peak of 1106 miles. In addition the International and Great Northern owned the Austin Dam and Suburban Railway Company and a 50 percent interest in the Galveston Houston and Henderson Railroad Company. Less than three years later the reorganized company was forced into receivership which lasted until the railroad was sold at foreclosure on July 28 1922. A new company the International-Great Northern Railroad Company was chartered on August 17 1922" TSHA. International and Great Northern Railroad Company. unknown
