"List of Automobiles" and "Rules and Rates" Guide.
Portland OR.: Oregon Insurance Rating Bureau. 1917 and 1921. Two stapled booklets pictured plus a 20 page loose-leaf format pamphlet used for purposes of insurance valuation of automobiles and trucks. Each item approximately 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches; 1917 List of Automobiles is 24 pp; 1921 List of Automobiles is 64 pp; pamphlet is 20 pp. Rust from staple binding of the two List of Automobiles booklets heaviest on the 1917 item. The two booklets provide alphabetical listings of in the language of the earlier booklet Automobiles "Electric Pleasure Vehicles" and "Commercial Vehicles" trucks. In the context of these three headings each booklet lists vehicles alphabetically by brand name identifies the manufacturer and place of manufacture and further distinguishes each company's vehicles by model and body type. A list price is then provided for each make and model vehicle. There are an astonishing number of automobile manufactures that comprise the complete listing; as well there is an expansive range with regard to list price of different vehicles. For example: a Ford is listed at $660 while a Locomobile Cabriolet at $12000. The 1921 booklet also provides price guides for "locking devices" and bumpers. Comparing the two booklets reveals the ebb and flow of automotive manufacture in the US and also the huge range of automotive manufacturing centers almost all of them east of the Mississippi however there is the "Tulsa" of Oklahoma and the "Texan" of Fort Worth: see picture pp 42-43. The three ephemeral items must be considered quite uncommon; they provide a compendium of manufacturers their products and pricing not readily available elsewhere.
