Vedere diventa allora un mezzo, uno strumento per conoscere in quelle cose, in quei fatti, le presenze di quella cultura che oggi chiamiamo "ambiente" L'ambiente, naturale, costruito, dipinto, descritto, o semplicemente vissuto, ha un riferimento "sociale" che, comunque lo si voglia interpretare o studiare, ne è alla base: può essere riferito a un solo individuo, a un momento storico, a una collettività, a un modo di vita; può essere l'ambiente interno o quello esterno. L'approccio proposto in questo libro è di usare lo strumento del vedere sulla base di una tesi riassumibile in: l'ambiente si vede. Bisogna perciò "saperlo" vedere, studiare come lo hanno visto alcuni maestri del "vedere" in varie epoche e luoghi, aggiungere altri casi o addirittura sceglierne diversi da quelli qui proposti che vogliono indicare come imparare a vedere l'ambiente può essere un lavoro libero e appassionante.
