HIRAM PARKER Jr, US NAVY ENGINEER
1866 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY AND JOURNAL OF US NAVAL ENGINEER VETERAN OF THE CIVIL WAR AND WITNESS TO ONE OF THE MOST DESTRUCTIVE WARS IN SOUTH AMERICA EVER
ASEA ABOARD USS DACOTAH BRAZIL FALKLAND IS. Fair. 1866. On offer is a super original 1866 manuscript relic of maritime and naval history being a journal handwritten by US Navy Asst. Engineer Hiram Parker Jr. Dated January 26th 1866 and ending on May 13th 1866 Parker details his voyage on the noted gunboat USS Dacotah to Rio de Janiero Medina Brazil and last entries were from the Faulkland sometimes Falkland Islands known as the Malvinas Islands to most South Americans. Parker and his ship arrive at the height of the intense and horrific "Great War of La Plata" 1864 - 1870 a war against Paraguay which was the bloodiest and most expensive in South American history. Parker does a super job observing and detailing the people the sights and of course matters of interest to a US seaman but first and foremost he spends most of his time describing the culture the people and the politics of Brazil. This is a 7" x 8 1/2" journal has narrative on 86 pages most are full pages. He mentions one young crew member being hit on the head by a sheet block while asleep cracking his skull and killing him also diving boys off ship for coins different machine repairs to the ship but our author has a lovely way with words and carries his love for Country and the ship on his sleeve: "We have indeed been having some rough weather. How the wind did blow & how high the waves ran. I never saw either excelled in all my precious sea going. Ur little craft showed herself equal to the emergency though she experienced a terrible rolling. American oak and iron and American hearts under the American ensign protected by the God of Nations should be equal to any emergency." Each page is filled with interesting observations when they reach Brazil from the holiday for the Emperor's grandson to entries like this: "Acting Master Price was buried in Potters field for the Catholics never permit Protestants to be buried in their cemeteries." This diary is really outstanding for bringing the reader right into the heart of Brazil through the eyes of an heroic 25 year old American veteran of the Civil War with the soul of a poet. BIO NOTES: one online source provides: Birth: Oct. 4 1841 Death: Feb. 17 1918. Civil War Union Naval Officer. Third Assistant Engineer 16 November 1861. Second Assistant Engineer 25 August 1863. First Assistant Engineer 11 October 1866. Resigned 18 February 1875. Burial: Charles Baber Cemetery Pottsville Schuylkill County Pennsylvania USA. Another source: Hiram Parker Jr. married Elizabeth Jane Myers December 23 1862. The covers are detached but present and some of the early pages are loose but those are numbered and none are missing. Some of the pages are brittle and split but all text is legible. Arranged under columns for ‘Pdrs pounders’ in feet and inches with the numbers of each and the weighth in ‘Cwt’. HMS ENTERPRISE
HMS Enterprise. The Story Of The First Commission, April 1926 to December 1928.
8vo., First and Sole Edition, with numerous plates and a folding map (lightly spotted); red cloth, upper board and backstrip blocked and lettered in gilt, a very good, bright, clean copy. The editor was almost certainly the Rev. Harold E. Stevens, ship's chaplain from 1 January 1927 to the end of the commission. The first of the Royal Navy's two 'E'-class Cruisers (the other being HMS Emerald), Enterprise was launched on Clydebank in 1919 and completed at Devonport in 1926. During the last phase of her first commission she was commanded by Pridham-Whipple, who (commanding the Mediterranean cruiser squadrons for Cunningham) became one of Britain's finest fighting admirals of WWII. The Enterprise's own WWII service comprised Atlantic escort 1939-40; Home Fleet 1940 (including the Norwegian campaign during which she supported the army at Narvik); South Atlantic 1940-41 (including Force H and Mers-el-Kebir); East Indies 1941-42; Eastern Fleet 1942-43; Home Fleet 1943-44 (including Normandy/Utah); Reserve and Trooping 1945. After long and faithful service she was decommissioned in 1946 and scrapped at Newport in the same year. The suggestion that a book of the first commission should be produced came from the ship's company and a copy was printed for everyone who had served in her for a year or more. Since her complement averaged 570 it is clear that few copies can have survived, let alone in this condition; we have been unable so far to trace another. EXTREMELY SCARCE

HMS HOWE
HMS Howe 1944-45. [With a Foreword by Captain H. .U. McCall]. RARE RECORD OF HER LAST WARTIME COMMISSION
4to., First and Sole Edition, with a frontispiece, 25 plates on 18, numerous illustrations (one full-page) in the text and front endpaper map in red and black; original grey-blue cloth, upper board blocked with ship's crest in blue, very neatly recased with old endpapers preserved, a very good, clean copy. This copy was formerly in the possession of G.A.J. Seymour (possibly Chief Shipwright). HMS Howe's last wartime commission took her from Scapa Flow to Auckland, including the UK naval ports, Gibraltar, Algiers, Port Said, Suez, Aden, Bombay, Trincomalee, Singapore, Colombo, Fremantle, Sydney and Auckland. Then she travelled across the Pacific to take part in air strikes against Leyte. Then back to Fremantle and on to Durban (where this publication seems to have been printed), Cape Town, Mombassa, the Seychelles and Colombo again, after which she retraced her outward route back to the UK. This record is the usual ship's mixture of chronology, geography, anecdote, private reminiscence, humour, cartoons and Crossing the Line. There is much coverage of her gunnery for which she was renowned throughout the Pacific Fleet. AN IMPORTANT AND VALUABLE ADDITION TO THE OPERATIONAL RECORD OF THE KGV BATTLESHIPS IN WWII. RARE. We can find no record of this publication in any reference known to us.
