SKY GUARDIANS: BRITAIN'S AIR DEFENCE 1918-1993.
London: Arms and Armour 1993. 224 pp large 8vo 9 7/8" H. B&w maps photographs. "Offers snapshots of UK air defences at ten-yearly intervals detailing how each new threat was perceived and what the response to it was with a critique of that response and subsequent orders of battle to demonstrate how air defence evolved in real terms. In-depth reviews of the major examples over 75 years include the first German raids on Britain and the development of anti-aircraft artillery; the appearance of German Heinkel and Dornier bombers in the 1930s and the design of the Hurricane and Spitfire to defeat this threat; and the defence against Soviet Cold War bombers in the form of the Hunter and Bloodhound. The result is a progressive history that concludes with the state of current defences and thoughts for the future: how will emerging challenges to the UK and NATO be met and countered Illustrated with a wide range of photographs of the weapons systems deployed through three quarters of a century this is an usual and perceptive new assessment with particular value in this anniversary year for the RAF." Small thin scuff on front board. Dust jacket is price-clipped has minor rubbing minor wrinkling at top of flap-folds and spine very small closed perforation on front flap-fold - archivally taped. Gibbs Gerald Air Marshal Sir.
SURVIVOR'S STORY.
London: Hutchinson 1956. 182 pp 8vo 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs maps. "Distinguished survivor of the early flying days and of many campaigns the author was the last British Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Air Force. This is the story not only of his own long and exciting years of service in many parts of the world but also of the Air Force itself from the time of the Flying Corps to the present day. In this book he strikes a new and very readable line among senior Air Force writers for he does not forget to give due place to the lighter and social side. His accounts of those early days when he served with the R.F.C. at Aboukir are both inspiring and amusing. After the First World War he had a highly eventful spell of service in Iraq Palestine and Transjordan and later in the early 1930's he went to Kenya and the Sudan. He has many good big-game stories to tell and many valuable comments to make also upon conditons in these troubled regions. A high-spot of his book is his account of the Battle of Britain throwing as it does considerable light upon the controversies regarding R.A.F. tactics and control. He had wide personal experience too of the war in Burma and was also present at Singapore when the Japanese surrendered. After the war before his final appointment in India he spent three years on United Nations work in the U.S.A. and he writes of America as of India with a sympathy born of intimate knowledge". Light scattered foxing on end papers and on edges of text block very small stain on rear free end paper light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine light browning on edges of text block and edges of boards. Dust jacket has edge creasing several chips and small edge pieces missing several small and tiny edge tears light browing very light tiny foxing marks on rear panel and flap-folds. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/Fair. Hutchinson Hardcover

Gibbs Patrick Wing Commander.
NOT PEACE BUT A SWORD.
London: Grub Street 1993. 256 pp large 8vo 9 7/16" H. B&w photographs. "After a short spell in a light bomber squadron flying Hawker Harts Gibbs was transferred to the Fleet Air Arm serving on the aircraft carriers 'Furious' and 'Courageous' mastering the Shark and Swordfish. Another move took Gibbs to Gosport as a flying instructor before he eventually joined a torpedo squadron. His readable and entertaining narrative describes a rapid and eventful progression from cadet to Flight Commander of a Beaufort squadron whilst also giving a clear impression of the society he lived in and the RAF itself struggling to come to terms with the dramatic changes war wrought upon a once peaceful country. Also illustrates Gibbs' increasing dedication to the airborne torpedo as a means for attacking coastal shipping. His articulate account - the vivid impression of a young airman at war - conveys a clear picture of the evolving tactics of Beaufort squadrons as they adapted swiftly to changing circumstances and demands." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine very tiny dent on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds very light rubbing. Revised Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Illus. by Chris Thomas cover art. Grub Street Hardcover

TORPEDO LEADER.
London: Grub Street 1992. 206 pp large 8vo 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs map. "A first-hand and very personal story its lucid exciting and readable narrative describes firstly the author's frustration as a Staff Officer in Cairo then more significantly his triumphs and disasters as a Beaufort Flight Commander on anti-shipping operations from Malta in that crucial summer of 1942. Fighting uphill battles against 'the powers that be' Gibbs remained utterly dedicated to the airborne torpedoes as a weapon of war against shipping and succeeded in changing not only tactical but also strategic policy - very rare indeed for a junior officer. But his book also gives new insight into the often haphazard way war was waged in the Mediterranean the daily dangers the inveitable losses." Book is Fine.
