L'Eole de Clément Ader quitta le sol le 9 octobre 1890. Et c'est Santos-Dumont qui, le 12 novembre 1906, volant à 6 mètres du sol, établit les trois premiers records du monde : durée avec 21 secondes 1/5, distance avec 220 mètres, vitesse avec 41,292 kilomètres à l'heure. Soixante ans plus tard, l'Américain White, sur X-15, s'élève à 95 kilomètres, lancé en vol d'un avion porteur.
