Tables. Graphs. Bibliographical references. Index. Bound in the original red cloth lettered in shiny gold over black panels on the spine and front cover. A volume from the MCGRAW-HILL SERIES IN MISSILE AND SPACE TECHNOLOGY. Born in Germany the author received his Ph.D. in physics at age 23. In 1943 he joined Dr. Wernher von Braun's team of German rocket scientists. After World War II Stuhlinger immigrated to the United States with Dr. von Braun and 125 other scientists as part of Operation Paperclip. In the 1950s he developed designs for solar-powered spacecraft at the Army Ballistic Missile Agency in Huntsville Alabama. From 1960 to 1968 Stuhlinger was director of the space science lab at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Much of his work focused on arcjet and ion propulsion systems. One of his most innovative designs was what he called a "sunship." It called for power from an ion stream vapor emitted by either caesium or rubidium atoms.
