Wade Horace M. 1916 2001. General in the US. Air Force 1937 1973 who was appointed Vice Chief of Staff of the the US. Air Force
TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY VICE CHIEF OF STAFF OF THE U.S. AIR FORCE GENERAL HORACE M. WADE.
Washington DC: January 12th 1973. 1973. Fine. - 100 words typed on a cream-colored 10-1/2 inch high by 9 inch wide sheet of "Department of the Air Force Office of the Chief of Staff" letterhead with the address and the Department of Defense seal printed in blue at the top. Signed "H. M. Wade". The bottom right corner is lightly bumped. Folded twice for mailing. Near fine. <p>Wade replies to a letter from Congressman Seymour Halpern soliciting his personal thoughts on achieving a lasting world peace. Wade assures Halpern of his desire for a just and lasting world peace "however although your request was for my personal 'views or formulas' any comments by me on this critically important subject through other than official channels would be highly inappropriate."<p>Horace Milton Wade 1916-2001 saw active service in World War II and the Vietnam War. In 1968 he was designated commander in chief United States Air Forces in Europe and was promoted to general. The following year he was appointed chief of staff Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe and in 1972 he became Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force--the post he held when this letter was written.<p>The Queens New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern 1913-1997 started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law including measures on schools housing civil rights nutrition and mental health. A Liberal he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits including painting and collecting autographs he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these he was proudest of his co- sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation. Washington, DC: January 12th, 1973. unknown

LIGHTNING BUGS AND OTHER RECONNAISSANCE DRONES.
Fallbrook CA: Armed Forces Journal International / Aero 1982. 222 pp large 8vo 9 7/8" H. B&w illustrations. "In the early 1960s technicians took the pilot out of the plane's cockpit put him on the ground at an electronic black box and had him 'fly' spy missions by remotely controlling an pilotless jet airplane. Because of this advanced technique formerly dangerous intelligence-gathering flights in hostile areas were possible without risking the lives of pilots or the loss of extremely costly manned aircraft. This then is the story of 'Lightning Bugs' and other Ryan reconnaissance drones and the contributions they made in combat in Southeast Asia." Very light browning to edges of text block light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine light edge wear remaider spray on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds light soiling on rear panel minor rubbing two small edge tears. Book Club Edition. Hard Cover. Wainwright John.
TAIL-END CHARLIE. ONE MAN'S JOURNEY THROUGH A WAR.
Macmillan London 1978. 187 pp 8vo 8 1/8" H hard cover in dust jacket. Ex-library. "The story of one man's journey through a war.including the funny bits frightening bits and idiotic bits. That is how John Wainwright approaches the subject of how he came to fly - and to survive - no less than seventy-two night bombing raids in Lancasters in the second world war. It was theoretically seventy-three raids - but he explains the circumstances that made the number officially even greater than it really was. On all these missions he flew as Rear-Gunner. As an introduction to this daunting experience he tells of his short adult working life in 'civvy street' before the Air Force claimed him. But the book is about flying the crew he flew with s o m e i n d i v idual raids perhaps above all his direct and down-to-earth recollections of 'what it was like'. John Wainwright does not deal in heroics 'stiff upper lips' the tradition of much recent writing about the war. Factual detail is p ar t of hi s bu si ne ss - such as in his description of what gear the rear-gunners donned for each flight unofficial as well as official: the unofficial armour to protect their manhood for instance. He defends his generation: 'Occasionally as in 19 39 war b eco mes th e lesser of two evils and at that moment it becomes not glorious but urgent. But let nobody suggest that we who fought that war enjoyed that war'.It is one man's journey through a war - a fascinating recollecti on in tran q uili ty by a man who lived through one of the most terrifying parts cast for those who acted in the Second World War."
