Très rare première édition parue en juillet 1911 de cet hommage à l'aviation à l'époque de ses pionniers. (La deuxième édition date de 1922, quatre ans après la mort d'Edmond Rostand). Tirage limité à 10 exemplaires numérotés sur papier vergé à la forme, celui-ci N° 1. Exemplaire unique, orné d'aquarelles originales par Robert Sallès, dont une à pleine page signée, datée du 31 décembre 1911 à Paris, 1 grande vignette, 1 petite vignette, et 1 cul-de-lampe. Robert Sallès (Lisieux, Calvados, 1871 - 1929) est un peintre d'histoire, de scènes animées et paysages urbains, élève d'Alexandre Cabanel à l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris, et qui exposa au Salon des Artistes Français ; ses oeuvres sont exposées au Musée de Lisieux (Benezit). (quelques légères petites piqûres sur le premier plat). // Octavo (260 x 170 mm), 16 pp., three-quarter bradel cream paper, smooth spine with calligraphic title, top edge gilt, uncut, soft cover preserved (binding signed Loisellier - Le Douarin). Very rare first edition of this homage to early aviation, published in July 1911. (The second was published in 1922, four years after the author's death). Limited printing of only 10 numbered copies on nice paper "vergé à la forme" ; this copy is Nr 1. Illustrated with original watercolours by Robert Sallès, including 1 full-page signed and dated 31 december 1911 in Paris, 1 tall vignette, 1 small, and 1 cul-de-lampe. Robert Sallès (Lisieux, Calvados, 1871 - 1929), was a painter of history, living scenes and urban landscapes, student of Alexandre Cabanel in Paris "Ecole des Beaux-Arts", who exhibited in "Salon des Artistes Français" ; his paintings are exhibited in Lisieux Museum. Complete with 18 hand-colored lithographed plates of birds by Keulemans 2 hand-colored lithographed maps 4 duo-tone osteological plates and 10 text illustrations. Half morocco with the original blue printed rear wrapper bound in at the end. From the library of Dr. James M. Dolan Jr. curator of the San Diego Zoological Society with his bookplate and blind-stamp on lower blank margin of first leaf. An excellent copy with only very light browning on osteological plates. First edition as issued by the Zoological Society of London. Rothschild with Keulemans' exquisite plates again outdoes himself. Rothschild was obsessed with the cassowary a giant flightless bird with a colorful neck native to Papua New Guinea and the surrounding islands. He invested huge amounts of money in bringing the species over to England both dead and alive in order to study their habits plumage and behavior. In this monograph Rothschild describes in minute detail all species and subspecies local names measurements distribution bibliography and all other pertinent information such as the anatomical and taxonomic information. Casey Wood refers to it as "a beautifully illustrated treatise" and Anker goes a step further by calling it "an especially profusely illustrated treatise." The second section deals with"the relations of the Casuariidae to the remaining 'Struthious' forms and the position of these with regard to the 'Carinatae'" introduction. Pycraft credits Rothschild for having furnished the bulk of the material for this monograph. Rothschild 1868-1937 2nd Baron Rothschild member of one of the worlds wealthiest familes was a British zoologist who became a great collector and founded the Rothschild Natural History Museum in London. The Zoological Society published a number of exquisite ornithological monographs in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century; this one is considered one of the most important as well as magnificent and beautifully illustrated monoraph of the period. for the Society unknown‎
