Milwaukee: Harley-Davidson Mechanics School 1930. Original photograph mounted to a board with the title printed at the bottom. Framed and glazed. Very good."Production for Harley-Davidson’s 1917 model year was devoted to making military motorcycles by nearly half of all motorcycles made. Immediately Harley-Davidson recognized the new need for military quartermasters and mechanics to know the motorcycles front to back. So in Milwaukee Wis. in July of 1917 the very first three-week intensive course was held. The students were nine corporals from Fort Sam Houston Texas. The Harley-Davidson Quartermasters School was born. It didn’t take long for the leadership at Juneau Avenue to realize how valuable the operation would be. After World War I ended the name was changed to the Harley-Davidson Service School and enrollment was opened to any employee of authorized dealerships." Faint stamp of old dealership name on rear cover. Good.</p> <p>Heavily illustrated a rare 1916 catalog by the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. The catalog begins with company advertising and then moves into an extensive description of Harley-Davidson’s innovations including their “high speed high duty twin cylinder motor†three-speed transmission step-starter clutch automatic oil pump and electric lighting system. General specifications for all models are also given.</p> <p>Detailed specifications for their 1916 models follow each illustrated: the “11 Horsepower Twin Cylinder Three-Speed Model 16-F†the “11 Horsepower Twin Cylinder Single Geared Model 16-E†the “Electrically Equipped 11 Horsepower Twin Cylinder Three-Speed Model 16-J†the “6 Horsepower Single Cylinder Single Geared Model 16-B†and the “6 Horsepower Single Cylinder Three-Speed Model 16-C.†</p> <p>The final page advertises the Harley-Davidson Sidevan models 16–L and 16–M featuring a “true stream-line body†of enameled gray sheet metal and generously upholstered seating. An optional detachable apron which served as both cover and lap robe was also available. Early Motorcycle Enthusiast's Archive Including 9 Issues of The Antique Motorcycle Panoramic Inscribed Photo of Riders and Their Bikes and a Rare Original Polaroid of Actor Steve McQueen at One of Their Events
Early motorcycle enthusiast's well-preserved and extensive archive of publications photographs and plaques related to the antique motorcycle movement in America.Archive compiled by Samuel L. Merrill of Portland Oregon spanning from the 1970s to the mid-1990s. This archive includes over two dozen original items: photographic prints including one original Polaroid depicting actor Steve McQueen at an antique motorcycle event near Fresno CA in 1979 event plaques and an impressive suite of 9 printed periodicals related to the Antique Motorcycle Club of America AMCA and related organizations.<br /> <br /> Among the highlights is a striking large-format black-and-white photograph depicting 21 riders posed alongside their motorcycles—predominantly rare pre-1916 models including Excelsior Harley-Davidson and Indian machines. The reverse includes a detailed handwritten list of riders and their bikes indicating multiple Harley-Davidson D-2s a 1912 Indian 2-speed racer and a 1915 Excelsior among others. Also included is a Polaroid image captioned "Reedley Calif. C.A.M.A. 1979" showing Steve McQueen named in handwritten inscription standing among other enthusiasts. McQueen’s well-documented love of early motorcycles makes this image a valuable artifact of his real-world engagement with the vintage motorcycle community. Additional snapshots show gatherings at pre-1916 tours and reliability runs including one labeled “Archie’s 32 H.D.†and another attributed to the "1979 H.C.C.A. 3rd Pre-’16 Cycle Tour – Shirley Van Veldhuizen.â€<br /> <br /> The printed material is equally rich. Included are 9 issues of The Antique Motorcycle ranging from 1982-1997 and featuring vivid cover photography of restored classics such as a 1912 Pierce Four a 1914 Harley-Davidson V-twin and an early Sears Dreadnought. Each issue contains detailed restoration articles archival advertisements member profiles and histories of early 20th-century manufacturers. A standout article from the Summer 1995 issue Vol. 34 No. 2 titled “The Prodigal Son’s Return†discusses the rediscovery and restoration of a 1947 Indian Chief describing how “the bike had sat under a tarp for nearly twenty years before roaring back to life in full regalia.†Also present are a 1978 AMCA membership roster a 1983 issue of Freewheeling West Vol. 1 No. 2 and Volume 7 Issue 1 of Evergreen Times a Pacific Northwest-focused publication of the AMCA Evergreen Chapter featuring a cover image of a Sears motorcycle and text discussing recent “Pre-16 Tour†events and mechanical advice columns for antique engine tuning. Ephemera include two metal plaques commemorating participation in elite tours: the 1982 Sixth Annual Pre-1916 Motorcycle Tour at Giacometti Ranch in Santa Rosa CA and the 1980 Fourth Annual Delta Traveler Reliability Tour in Lodi CA both sanctioned by the AMCA and California State Automobile Association. 1960s Harley Davidson Motorcycle Club and Dealership in North Carolina Photo Archive
Harley Davidson Motorcycle Archive of 60 photos of a Harley Davidson motorcycle club based around the Cable dealership in Winston-Salem NC 1958-68. Photos are black and white silver gelatin prints and many are covered in protective tape with corner tabs likely from the same album. Photos measure between 3†x 3†and 3" x 4.5â€. Most photos identify the subjects with names on recto or verso and often provide locations. Many of the subjects in this archive belonged to the Southern Eagles Motorcycle Club which was based around the Cable dealership. The owner of the Cable dealership Odell Cable is seen among S.E. M.C. members and their families. Many photos show members atop or posed proudly with their bikes wearing S.E. M.C. riding caps with an eagle insignia a few photographs show members gathered in large groups about to partake in a "run". Some photographs show women on bikes indicating that the community was not just a 'boy's club'. A few photographs show winners of various runs with their trophies one photo shows two men and a woman holding cash and brass covered trophies captioned en verso "Winners of Poker Run -- Bill Grubbs Shirley Chamberlain Don Boces". One photo shows Cable posed next to his 1937 Harley Davidson and 1940 Goulding side car. A few other images show Odell with his wife Frances posed in front of Cable's and Frances with other women in the community. One photo shows a line up of motorcycles adorned with American flags the S.E. M.C. members standing by in their white member's jackets and brimmed caps ready to partake in a parade. A few photographs show the members gathering for various American holidays such as a Christmas Banquet an Easter Egg game and a Thanksgiving "Turkey Run". A thorough collection that shows the culture and community that sprouted up around this motorcycle club and dealership. A charming time capsule of 1960s Harley enthusiasts on the East Coast. 1960s Harley Davidson Motorcycle Club and Dealership in North Carolina Photo Archive
Harley Davidson Motorcycle Archive of 61 photos of a Harley Davidson motorcycle club based around the Cable dealership in Winston-Salem NC throughout the 1960s. Photos are black and white silver gelatin prints and are often covered in protective tape with corner tabs likely from the same album. Photos measure between 3†x 3†and 3.25†x 4.25â€. Many photos identify the subjects with names on recto or verso and often provide locations. Many of the subjects in this archive belonged to the Southern Eagles Motorcycle Club which was based around the Cable dealership. A few photos show a small group of riders who were "Mexico Bound". The owner of the Cable dealership Odell Cable is seen among S.E. M.C. members and their families. The Southern Eagles are seen on various outings including at the Davie Motorcycle Speedway likely located in Davie County just outside of Winston-Salem. Some riders wear leather jackets and denim while others wearing the official white club jacket were voted the "best dressed club" in a contest in one image. The Southern Eagles were a patriotic bunch and can be seen in one image lining up for a parade in their Harleys with large American flags hoisted on the bikes. Several photos show Southern Eagles holding trophies in front of the club. In one shot we see a Harley Topper scooter being advertised on a showroom floor as "A Thinking Man's Transportation. 100 Miles per Gal. Automatic Transmission. The Topper by Harley-Davidson. $449". Many of these shots were taken in the early 1960s when the Topper came out and it is shown in several images. We see the Harley riders posed on gleaming new touring bikes muddy dirt bikes Sprint racing bikes cruisers on dirt roads in the woods and on city streets. The club has an outing to "Breakfast Run" which appears to be the destination after a ride out into the woods where bikers and their loved ones grab coffee and breakfast. The Southern Eagles make a journey out to the coast for a "Beach Rally" in one photo. Several shots show the bikes up close but just as many if not more show the culture and community that sprouted up around this motorcycle club and dealership. Most photos identify the subjects with names on recto or verso and often provide locations. Most photos are around 3" x 4" but there are three 8" x 10.25" photos. Many of the subjects in this archive belonged to the Southern Eagles Motorcycle Club which was based around the Cable dealership. The owner of the Cable dealership Odell Cable is seen among S.E. M.C. members and their families. Cable is pictured in one of the full size photos shaking hands with one of the Harley racers in the his club after a 1958 event. Another photo shows Cable presenting an award to a Merlin Bellamy police chief of a community near Myrtle Beach South Carolina. Cable is also seen in front of some Spanish Moss trees in Daytona Beach 1964 riding a large Harley touring bike with a sidecar attached. Not all photos were taken during breezy summer days however as one shot shows a S.E. M.C. member in all white driving his Harley through a Winston-Salem street caked with fresh snow. The last full size photo shows a similiarly handsome Harley touring bike in a building lobby during a "sportsman show" event. At the sportsman's show we see all kinds of Harleys on display from a minibike to the touring bikes with all the bells and whistles. One exceptionally popular model is the XLCH Sportster seen in many images throughout this archive. There are also a few shots of the scarce Ranger model which was produced only for the 1962 year. Some riders wear leather jackets and denim while others wearing the official white club jacket were voted the "best dressed club" in a contest in one image. We also see the Harley Topper the scooter which was produced from only 1960-65 sometimes with an attached sidecar. One image shows "Odell Cable his 1937 Harley-Davidson W/ Goulding Side Car - 1940 Year Made" in front of a sign announcing "Motorcycle Races Greensboro Battleground R. Sun Sept. 22". One photo shows a military man named Robert Cranor in front of the dealership with his new Sportster. Several shots show the bikes up close but just as many if not more show the culture and community that sprouted up around this motorcycle club and dealership. Harley Davidson Motorcycle Club Photo Archive 1970s-1980s California
Motorcycle Culture Photo archive of 44 color and black and white photographs of bikers from the 70s-80s in California possibly the Modesto Harley Davidson club chapter as one man's vest reads "Modesto". Photos measure between 1" x 1" - 3.5" x 5. The majority if not all of the bikes are Harley Davidsons. Many photos are of either bikers on their motorcycles or prideful shots of the bikes alone. Shown are different models some with custom classic flame paint jobs. Men and women bikers are seen throughout atop their motorcycles driving down open highways gathering together at meet ups and camping out at pit stops for longer trips. One photo shows two long haired men from the 70s inspecting their bike owner's writing en verso reads "First day out of the garage getting ready to start it for the first time after 1 1/2 years of building it piece by piece." Another interesting photo shows a picture of the cameraman sitting in the bed of a Chevy pickup taking "in action" motorcycle shots. Other photos show the rebellious and free spirit of bikers flying down highways and giving the viewer "the bird" or a peace sign. The motorcycle club culture found it's footing after out of place WWII troops needed to reestablish their community identity. Decades later biker clubs exist as a formative American subculture identifying with freedom pride and camaraderie. Some photos are clipped at the corners one has a magnet glued to the back. Overall this collection is in very good condition. unknown
