Cette préface commence ainsi : « L'amateur qui est admis à examiner les trésors d'un collectionneur chinois ne voit pas surgir seulement des coffres les précieux rouleaux de soie, les objets de jade, les albums de dessins à l'encre de chine, mais aussi des gravures dont l'origine, la technique et l'histoire posent au profane un problème. Ces minces, souples et fragiles feuilles de papier de Chine présentent des cortèges princiers, des batailles, des figures mythologiques, des inscriptions en caractères anciens. Elle évoquent aux yeux de l'occidental non averti des gravures sur bois ou des lithographies.
