Ogni spoglia era contenuta in una cassetta portata a mano da congiunti, da soldati, da privati cittadini." "Una tragica lotta notturna s'e svolta sopra un piroscafo britannico nelle acque di Hong-Kong. Trenta pirati, camuffati da passeggeri, si sono precipitati sul ponte di comando per impadronirsi della nave. Esasperati per la resistenza opposta dall'equipaggio, hanno cosparso di petrolio e incendiato la tolda. Tra i bagliori dell'incendio la lotta è continuata per molte ore sino all'arrivo di un cacciatorpediniere inglese. Vi sono stati cento morti.".

London.: The Graphic. March 151890. Engraving 15.1 x 22.6 cm plus caption on a trimmed newspaper leaf slightly toned the images in very good condition. Engraving redolent of colonial Hong Kong from a sketch by an engineer of the China Squadron Charles E. Eldred the Hong Kong Almanack for 1891 lists him as being aboard the British vessel Victor Emmanuel. The Hong Kong Polo Club also had strong military ties as the original commentary attests below the Secretary of the Club was a Staff Major Fletcher of the Royal Artillery. <br> <br>"This meeting took place on November 28th having been post poned on account of bad weather. The Chinese coolies were much interested in the bagpipes of the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders probably because to their ears the sound bears a very close resemblance to that produced by a common Chinese instrument something like a flageolet. Within the enclosure almost the only people not English were the Chinese chair-coolies and the mah-Joos grooms. The chair-coolies cluster outside the Grand Stand the balcony of which is occupied chiefly by ladies. The professional coolies were naturally highly interested in the Chair Races which were the most amusing events in the programme. In the Fai-Tee Stakes the gentlemen amateurs appeared in regular coolie-costume. One of the riders borrowed his bagpipes from one of the Highland pipers; but they proved his destruction for when his team came to grief just outside the winning-post he sat on the ground playing his pipes and deafening himself to the shouts of the judges who were endeavouring to inform him that he had not passed the winning-post. In our picture the pipers have been accidently omitted.-Our engraving is from a sketch by Mr. Charles E. Eldred H.M.S. Cordelia Hong Kong." Half page engraving 15 x 34 cm and a cameo engraving of Sir John Bowring with decorative vignettes on a single newspaper leaf with incomplete associated text biographical note spots of browning and edge-wear lower edge trimmed not affecting the caption but in very good condition. Engravings prepared for "The Illustrated London News" on the announcement of the British Governor Sir John Bowring 1729-1872 and published two months before his arrival in April 1854. Although a brilliant man his was a turbulent tenure ending in1857 following his wife's death from arsenic poisoning in what became known as the Esing Bakery incident an attempted poisoning of the European population in Hong Kong during the Second Opium War. <br> <br>From the Estate of the late collector and scholar Arthur Hacker with his pencilled catalogue mark in the upper margin. . His descriptive commentary for each engraving is mid-page. The four booklets each focus on general information dining and entertainment sightseeing and shopping. Throughout each booklet particular emphasis is placed on the affordability of travel in Hong Kong and much effort is made to portray the colony as a romantic idyll. . c.1849. . Water colour on paper Hong Kong visible area 74.8 X 137 cm. mounted. Overall size: 90 cm x 150 cm.<br /> A rare large-scale view of Hong Kong Island painted in the first ten years of colonial rule. The charming scene shows both Chinese Junks and European tripple-masted sailing ships at anchor in Victoria harbour with the rippling hills of Hong Kong Island above the burgeoning town of Victoria.<br /><br />Many watercolours painted for western export emphasised the trading nature of Hong Kong hence the emphasis on merchant vessels and company buildings on the waterline including those of Dent & Co. and Lindsay. The absence of St John's Cathedral amongst the urban waterline dates this painting before 1849 only eight years after land grants were first issued to British investors following the cession of Hong Kong to Britain at the Treaty of Nanking. The image is also reminiscent of the 1843 seal of Hong Kong which shows merchant ships on a quay with the mountains of Hong Kong in the background and strengthens the idea that this painting represents the quintessential depiction of Hong Kong.<br /> [c.1849]. unknown

Probyn's horse Sikhs to the number of five hundred are encamped on the mainland; Armstrong guns also are there.
