A ONE-AND-A-QUARTER PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by ABIEL ABBOT LOW regarding the naming of the "Franklin Building" in Brooklyn.
New York Jan. 8 1887. 1887. Very good. - Over 75 words penned on both sides of an 8 inch high by 5 inch wide sheet of A.A. Low's personal 31 Burling Slip buff white stationery with attached blank leaf. In his letter addressed to Mr. Davenport at the Garfield Building which was also one of the buildings which A.A. Low developed in Brooklyn Low mentions the possibility of naming the building located at 186 Remsen Street which would house the Franklin Trust Company after that institution: "I have asked Mr. ____ if it would suit him or it will not to have the edifice called 'The Franklin Building'". Signed "Respectfully yours A.A. Low". Folded for mailing with some minor creases to the left edge. Remnants of paper adhere to the edge of the verso of the blank leaf. Very good. <p>The American entrepreneur businessman and philanthropist Abiel Abbot Low 1811-1893 made his fortune from the China trade. His company A.A. Low & Brothers imported teas porcelain and silks from China and Japan. His firm was originally housed on Fletcher Street in New York City. It moved to new quarters the A.A. Low building which he erected on John street in 1849-50. Once established in New York Low went on to invest in numerous other ventures including the first Atlantic cable and the Nickel Plate Railroad.<p>Among A.A. Low's speculative investments were the Garfield Building as well as financial institutions such as the Dime Savings Bank and the Title Guarantee & Trust Company. Another of his projects the Franklin Building is a seven and a half story Romanesque Revival Building. While most were later replaced by taller skyscrapers The Franklin Building which was completed in 1887 by the architectural firm of the Parfitt Brothers survives as one of the oldest buildings in the district. Cover made from paper produced from blue sandalwood bark (Qingtan / Pteroceltis tatarinowii) and inner pages made from rice-straw paper (Xuan paper) folded in the Chuanzi (traditional thread-bound or butterfly pamphlet style) - is characteristic of elite government publications of the era. - Bearing the red seal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the bottom right-hand corner of the first page. - The use of Seal Script (Zhuanshu) for the title asserts historical legitimacy and archaism, while the crisp Song/Ming Regular Script (Kaishu) was the gold standard for official, highly readable governmental documentation. Documents of this nature : printed directly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Printing Office and Yuan Shikai’s Presidential Office Printing Office, were produced in incredibly limited runs. Because Yuan Shikai’s empire collapsed after just 83 days, and his regime was immediately discredited, vast quantities of imperial presidential papers were destroyed, abandoned, or lost in the subsequent warlord era.The presence of the official red seal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs anchors its authenticity, elevating it from a mere historical curiosity to an archival-grade artifact. - Book in very good condition.

Lu Jia leur ressemble fort, mais quittant le domaine de la stratégie, il développe ses Nouveaux discours comme un art de gouverner dans et par l'unité, s'adressant à la fois au prince et à ses sujets et fondé sur une vision du monde naturel et humain. Les douze chapitres de ce traité sont traversés de références intellectuelles riches et diverses articulant les figures idéales de Confucius et des sages de l'Antiquité avec les réalisations et les échecs historiques des périodes récentes. Longtemps considéré comme un texte mineur, les Nouveaux discours donnent en réalité à lire un manuel de politique destiné à asseoir le nouveau pouvoir des Han à un moment où le succès de la dynastie n’est en aucune façon durablement assuré. Dans ce texte, qui se veut donc une reformulation complète du confucianisme ancien, réactivant les valeurs morales dégagées par le Maître trois siècles plus tôt et les adaptant aux circonstances de son temps, la tradition chinoise voit la première formulation nette du rôle et de l’influence des lettrés dans l’organisation et la stabilisation du pouvoir impérial. Il constitue donc une étape importante dans l’histoire complexe des relations entre confucianisme et régime impérial. Lu Jia, originaire de l'ancien royaume de Chu, est volontiers présenté comme le premier lettré confucéen de la dynastie des Han. Il apparaît avant tout comme un grand rhéteur et un habile diplomate. Dès le début des soulèvements contre l’empire des Qin, il se rallie à l’un des chefs de l’insurrection, Liu Bang, et contribua ainsi, non par les armes mais par ses idées et sa langue affûtée, à sa victoire finale et à la fondation des Han. Faisant fond sur sa propre expérience et sur sa science classique en partie héritée de Xunzi, il compose un ouvrage historique majeur, les Annales des Chu et des Han, aujourd'hui perdu, mais qui eut une influence profonde sur les Mémoires historiques de Sima Qian. Les Nouveaux discours, seul texte de Lu Jia transmis par la tradition, illustre les talents de rhéteur, de diplomate et d’historien d’un lettré aux multiples facettes. Stéphane Feuillas, ancien élève de l'École Normale Supérieure de la rue d'Ulm, est maître de conférences en langue et civilisation de la Chine classique à l’Université Paris Diderot. Spécialiste de la pensée et de la littérature de la dynastie des Song, il a traduit un volume d'œuvres de Su Shi intitulé Un Ermite reclus dans l'alcool et autres rhapsodies, et les Commémorations du même auteur, paru dans la collection « Bibliothèque chinoise » des Belles Lettres. Béatrice L’Haridon est maître de conférences en langue et civilisation de la Chine classique à l’Université Paris Diderot. Ses travaux portent sur la pensée et l'historiographie de la dynastie des Han. Elle a traduit dans la collection « Bibliothèque chinoise » des Belles Lettres les Maîtres mots Yang Xiong.
