Serial Fu Manchu: The Chinese Supervillain and the Spread of Yellow Peril Ideology
8vo, br. ed. 199pp. he evil mastermind&;and master of disguise&;Fu Manchu has long threatened to take over the world. In the past century, his dastardly plans have driven serialized novels, comic books, films, and TV. Yet this sinister Oriental character represents more than an invincible criminal in pop culture; Fu Manchu became the embodiment of the Yellow Peril. Serial Fu Manchu provides a savvy cultural, historical, and media-based analysis that shows how Fu Manchu&;s irrepressibility gives shape to&;and reinforces&;the persistent Yellow Peril myth. Ruth Mayer argues that seriality is not merely a commercial strategy but essential to the spread of European and American fears of Asian expansion.Tracing Fu Manchu through transnational serials in varied media from 1913 to the 1970s, Mayer shows how the icon evolved. She pays particular attention to the figure&;s literary foundations, the impact of media changes on his dissemination, and his legacy. In the series Asian American History and Culture, edited by Sucheng Chan, David Palumbo-Liu, Michael Omi, K. Scott Wong, and Linda Trinh

Chinese Furniture: A Guide to Collecting Antiques
The international market for antique Chinese furniture is booming, and masterpieces from the Ming and Qing dynasties are now worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Chinese Furniture is a survey of these collectibles from the very best hardwood pieces featured to standard softwood specimens still available on the Asian market. This antique furniture book presents an overview of carving styles, wood types, regional variations, class distinctions and restoration techniques. Detailed chapters on various types of wooden furniture cover chairs, stools and benches, tables and desks, beds, cabinets and bookshelves, doors and screens and household accessories. With this renewed interest in antique furniture, a forgery market has emerged. Thousands of factories in southern China are churning out brand new or refurbished furniture and passing them off as Chinese antiques. Chinese Furniture unearths these forgeries and serves as an indispensable reference guide to collectors of antique wood furniture

Confucius: A Throneless King
8vo, hardcover in dj, pp.234. Confucius is one of the most important figures in Chinese history, whose philosophies have shaped world culture. Often overlookedoutside his native country, Confucius himself was a fascinatingfigure. A contemporary of Buddha, Confucius was outspokenand uncompromising man who revolutionized Chinese societynearly 2,500 years ago, when the country was merely a looseweb of feudal provinces. No small feat for the illegitimate son ofa retired soldier and a teenage concubine, who once received aprophecy from the local fortune-teller that she would give birth toa ?throneless king.? Perhaps because of these humble beginnings, Confucius had apassionate belief in respect for others and this belief underpinnedhis life and teachings. He advised the emperors and kings of hisday, gaining their respect and undying enmity along the way. hewas equally proud of both achievements, saying that if the evilpeople of the world liked him, he was doing something wrong.Confucius established many ideas that are taken for granted today, from respecting one?s parents to the Golden Rule, to virtuebeing its own reward. his theories became the foundation of oneof the world?s first civil services and established social structuresthroughout Asia that still exist today.

Chinese concepts of Privacy
8vo pp.241, coll. sinica leidensia vol. lv. Privacy is a basic concept in discussions on the concept of human rights. This first book on the (traditional) Chinese approach to the subject shows that concepts of privacy have been part of discourse in China from the earliest recorded times to the present, with varying contents, mechanisms, functions and values at different times and among different groups of people.Individual chapters examine inscriptions on early bronzes, medical case histories in the Ming and Qing dynasties, fictional representations of privacy experiences, discussions on public and private virtue by Liang Qichao, the role (or absence) of privacy issues in letters in early imperial China, and the function and values of privacy, secrecy and seclusion in the correspondence between Lu Xun and Xu Guangping. As the first treatment of Chinese concepts of privacy in any language, the book is interdiscipinary by nature and pays particular attention to the terminology and methodology of privacy studies.Particulars and Universals: Studies on Chinese Privacy / Bonnie S. China Mountain Zhang
8vo, br. ed. 'I am Zhang, alone with my light, and in that light I think for a moment that I am free.' Imagine a world where Chinese Marxism has vanquished the values of capitalism and Lenin is the prophet of choice. A cybernetic world where the new charioteers are flyers, human-powered kites dancing in the skies over New York in a brief grab at glory. A world where the opulence of Beijing marks a new cultural imperialism, as wealthy urbanites flirt with interactive death in illegal speakeasies, and where Arctic research stations and communes on Mars are haunted by their own fragile dangers. A world of fear and hope, of global disaster and slow healing, where progress can only be found in the cracks of a crumbling hegemony. This is the world of Zhang. An anti-hero who's still finding his way, treading a path through a totalitarian order - a path that just might make a difference. Maureen F. McHugh was born in Loveland, Ohio, and educated at Ohio University and New York University. She taught in Chinafor a year, and her experiences there and in New York formed the basis of her first novel, China Mountain Zhang. She has lived in New York City, Shijiazhuang, China, and Austin, Texas. She currently resides in Los Angeles, California.

Law and Order in Sung China. With figures, maps, and tables (= Cambridge Studies in Chinese History, Literature and Institutions).
New York, Cambridge University Press, 1992. xiv, 557 S. Orig.-Leinenband mit Schutzumschlag. "This study examines law enforcement within the context of Sung society. Professor McKnight shows that the group of criminals who were the core of the habitual criminal group in Sung China were young unattached males with few lifeskills. What became of the criminal after capture and conviction is also an important aspect of this study, which addresses basic questions in Chinese punishment. This work is the first comprehensive study of law enforcement in traditional China. The depth and rigour to which the subject is treated would make it most appropriate for scholars in legal history and East Asian studies" (Publisher's description).
