‎Sehr guter Zustand. -- Trotz seiner immensen geographischen Ausdehnung gehört China, das von seinen Bewohnern Zhongguo, "Reich der Mitte", genannt wird, zu den ältesten Weltkulturen mit einer historischen Kontinuität, und zwar vom ausgehenden 3.Jh. v. Chr. bis ins 20. Jh. Die zwischen dem 5. und dem 3.Jh. v. Chr. sich herauskristallisierende Vorstellung eines Weltreiches, das "alles, was unter dem Himmel ist" (tianxia) in sich vereint, wurde erstmals Wirklichkeit, als der Herrscher des Qin-Reiches - von "Qin" leitet sich unsere Bezeichnung "China" ab - die Kämpfe zwischen den zahlreichen rivalisierenden Reichen beendete und sich im Jahr 221 v. Chr. zum "Ersten Erhabenen Göttlichen" ausrief. Das theoretische Fundament des Kaiserreiches legte die nachfolgende Han-Dynastie (206 v. Chr.- 221 n. Chr.), die den Konfuzianismus, eine im 5.Jb. v. Chr. entstandenen gesellschaftlich-ethischen Bewegung, zur Staatslehre erhob. An der Spitze des sozialen Gefüges stand der Kaiser, der als Mittler zwischen den beiden kosmischen Entitäten Erde und Himmel fungierte. -- Die systematische Erfassung von Experimenten und empirischen Beobachtungen in Verbindung mit einer effizienten Organisation der Produktionsprozesse führte dazu, dass China auf technisch-wissenschaftlichem Gebiet dem Abendland anhaltend bis ins 15./16.Jh. n. Chr. überlegen war. Der Daoismus, die zweite autochthone Denkrichtung des antiken China, förderte die Forschung im protowissenschaftlichen Bereich durch die Erkundung der regelmäßig wiederkehrenden Erscheinungen der Natur und des Kosmos. -- Der Zusammenbruch des Kaiserreichs nach dem Sturz der Han-Dynastie begünstigte den Kulturaustausch mit den Völkern in den Grenzregionen und ermöglichte das Eindringen des (aus Indien stammenden) Buddhismus in das Herz der chinesischen Gesellschaft. Nach über 350 Jahren wurde das Reich durch die nur kurz regierende Sui-Dynastie (581-618) wieder hergestellt. Sie führte grundlegende Reformen durch, die der 300-jährigen Herrschaft der nachfolgenden Tang-Dynastie (618-907) zugute kamen. -- Die Zeit der Tang-Dynastie war das Goldene Zeitalter des antiken China, das sich durch geographische Ausdehnung, religiöse Toleranz und eine kosmopolitische und liberale Politik auszeichnete. Nach dem Ende der Tang-Dynastie und einer fast fünfzig Jahre währenden Periode der Auflösung wurde China wiedervereint, doch die barbarischen Völker des Nordens stellten eine ernsthafte Bedrohung dar, der die Song-Dynastie (960-1279) sich nur durch die Zahlung hoher Tributleistungen und später durch die Verlegung der Hauptstadt nach Südchina (1127) erwehren konnte, ln dieser Periode einer intensiven Förderung der Künste prägte sich die so genannte Kultur der Literaten-Beamten aus. Die Song-Dynastie wurde durch die mongolische Eroberungswelle überrollt, und Kubilai, ein Enkel Dschinghis Khans, stieg auf den Kaiserthron. Er begründete die Yuan-Dynastie (1279-1368), eine fast hundertjährige Fremdherrschaft, deren Administration vor allem Ausländer einstellte. Während dieser Zeit gelangten die Erfindungen des antiken China ins Abendland, also ausgerechnet als die Diskriminierungen jeden schöpferischen Impuls bremsten. -- Die nachfolgende Ming-Dynastie (1368-1644) besann sich auf die herkömmlichen chinesischen Werte zurück, doch die sino-zentristische Politik führte zu einer völligen Abriegelung nach außen und erstickte jede Reformbestrebung im Keim. Hier endet der vorliegende Band, also vor dem traumatischen Zusammentreffen mit der technologischen Überlegenheit der Westmächte, das sich zur Zeit der Regierung des letzten Herrscherhauses abspielte, der Qing-Dynastie (1644-1911). Diese letzte Periode des Kaiserreiches könnte für sich allein ohne weiteres einen eigenen Band füllen, wie im Übrigen auch die vordynastische Epoche, die sich durch eine kulturelle Vielfalt auszeichnet, von der man dank der intensiven Grabungsaktivität im heutigen China immer mehr Kenntnis hat. Die Weitergabe des Wissens durch eine intellektuelle Elite, die sich aus Angehörigen der Beamtenschicht zusammensetzte, hatte tatsächlich eine Gleichschaltung der literarischen Produktion und der Geschichtsschreibung zur Folge. Diese historischen Quellen werden heute jedoch von materiellen Zeugnissen flankiert, die eine Erweiterung und teilweise Revision unserer Kenntnisse zu zahlreichen Aspekten der Kultur im antiken China erforderlich machen. Die Bestattungsikonographie, wie sie uns beispielsweise in den Gräbern von Mawangdui begegnet, offenbart uns eine imaginäre Welt, die parallel zum Konfuzianismus existierte, der magisch-religiöse Aspekte ignorierte oder in rationale Begriffe fasste. Die wichtigsten archäologischen Quellen sind Gräber, Felsentempel und zufällige Funde bedeutender Schätze. Das, was von den alten kaiserlichen und privaten Sammlungen übrig geblieben ist, bietet einen Überblick über die Malerei und Kalligraphie, dafür mangelt es an architektonischen Zeugnissen, was mit der Verderblichkeit des hauptsächlich verwendeten Baumaterials - Holz - zu tun hat. -- Im Abendland ist China sehr lange ein Märchenland gewesen, fern jeder Realität. Aufgrund der mit der Übersetzung der schriftlichen Quellen verbundenen Schwierigkeiten einerseits und der Komplexität der beiden wichtigsten chinesischen Lehrgebäude Konfuzianismus und Daoismus andererseits kam es nur verzögert zu einem tieferen Verständnis dieser alten Weltkultur. Doch dank des bei wissenschaftlichen Grabungen zutage geförderten archäologischen Materials und genauerer philologischer Untersuchungen haben wir heute die Möglichkeit, uns ein lebendiges, dynamisches Bild von diesem großen alten Reich zu machen. Later, Jews came by way of Mid Eastern trade route, and the first permanent Jewish settlement in China, whose descendants are still present in K'ai Feng, was in the ninth of tenth century. Their numbers grew large enough to be noticed by the central government in the mid 1300s. After the first early settlers, though, no new Jewish communities were created in China until the 1800s; consequently, the K'ai Feng Jews were diluted through, intermarriage with the Chinese, both in religion and ethnicity over the centuries.
