‎*** DEFINITE EDITION OF THOMAS' COLLECTED WORKS, A LARGESIZE DECORATIVELY BOUND SET; 5 VOLUMES COMPLETE 'SO FAR': according to 'Inventario del Fondo Santo Tomás de Villanueva (STV) de los siglos XVI-XIX' of 'Biblioteca Del Colegio mayor-seminario de la Presentación de la Virgen Maria y Santo Tomás de Villanueva' from March 1st 2010, a final sixth Volume (with constitutions and letters?) has been released in 1897; added is an early 18th century copper-engraved portrait of Thomas by F. Lawson. - Bindings slightly rubbed, titlepages with German ownership name and acquisition-proof (''Valentiae 20 septembris 1975''); else in best conditon. --- A BEAUTIFUL SET! Thomas' parents (his father was a miller) regularly distributed food and provisions to the poor. It is conveyed that as a young boy he often went about naked because he had given his clothing to the poor. After studying Arts and Theology at the University of Alcalá de Henares he became a professor there, teaching arts and philosophy. In 1516 he joined the Augustinian friars in Salamanca and was ordained a priest in 1518. He became renowned for his eloquent and effective preaching and among his beautifully composed sermons stands out the 'Sermon on the Love of God', one of the great examples of sacred oratory of the 16th century. Charles V., upon hearing him preach, exclaimed, ''This monsignor can move even the stones!'' He heavily attacked his fellow bishops and was told of as a reformer; in some of his sermons he even attacked the cruelty of bullfighting. After successively holding the positions of prior of his local monastery, 'Visitor General' and 'Prior Provincial for Andalusia and Castile' - in 1533 sent out the first Augustinian friars to arrive in Mexico - Charles V. offered him the post of 'Archbishop of Granada' which he denied. In 1544 he was nominated as 'Archbishop of Valencia' and continued to refuse until ordered to accept by his superior. Given a donation to decorate his residence, he sent the money to a hospital in need of repair and began his episcopacy by visiting every parish in the Archdiocese to discover what were the needs of the people. He was well known for his great personal austerity (sold his straw-mattress to give money to the poor) and wore the same habit that he had received in the novitiate. Known as 'Father of the Poor' he also possessed an intelligent notion of charity, so that he sought to obtain structural solutions to the problem of poverty; for example giving work to the poor: ''Charity is not just giving, rather removing the need of those who receive charity and liberating them from it when possible.''; he established boarding- and high schools.(see wikipedia)‎
