Der Zweite Weltkrieg hat im pazifisch-ostasiatischen Raum zu einer weitgehenden Umstrukturierung der Herrschaftsverhältnisse, zum Ende des westlichen Kolonialismus geführt, der von Ende 1941 bis Mitte 1945 vom japanischen abgelöst wurde, der freilich gleichsam als Katalysator der Unabhängigkeitsbestrebungen der ost- und südostasiatischen Völker wirkte. Die Arbeit befaßt sich mit der Durchführung des Konzepts von Dai Toa Kyoeiken, der ?Großostasiatischen Sphäre gemeinsamen Wohlstands? innerhalb der ?Neuen Ordnung? auf den Philippinen und in Niederländisch-Indien (Indonesien). Sie schildert das Scheitern der japanischen Besatzungspolitik in zwei kulturell unterschiedlichen Gebieten: den von der spanischen und amerikanischen Zivilisation geprägten katholischen Philippinen, sowie dem muslimischen Niederländisch-Indien. ‎51 pp. contenant 120 photographies contrecollées, avec légendes manuscrites en néerlandais.Bel album, constitué principalement de photographies de Java (40), Sumatra (7), Hong Kong (5), Chine (24), Japon (2), Corée (17) et Hawaï (2). Dans cet ensemble, 33 photographies sont de grand format (env. 23,5 x 17,5 cm) et sont montées généralement à raison d’une par page ; les autres, plus petites, sont assemblées à raison de 3 à 7 par page. Les deux premières sont signées « Photo Kurkdjian, Soerabaia » (Surabaja) ; une autre, plus petite, est signée « Foto Britt - Boroboedoer » (Borobudur). Quatre autres, prises à Batavia, sont signées "A" dans un cachet ovale, à froid. La partie la plus importante se rapporte à Java : volcan Smeroe, ou Semeru, en éruption (1) ; villageois à l’entrée d’une grotte (1) ; temples de Prambanan, Tjandi Sewae, Tjandi Mendoek et Borobudur, avec le détail des statues et des bas-reliefs (17) ; petits métiers à Java (3) ; paysages et rizières (2) ; jardin botanique de Buitenzorg (actuellement Bogor), avec l’étang des nymphéas (4) ; Batavia, ou Djakarta (6), Sinagar (4) et Surabaya (2). Concernant Sumatra, les photos représentent Atjeh, ou Aceh (3), Deli (1), Padang Pandjang (3). Sur Hong Kong, elles montrent une vue générale, des scènes de rues et des bateaux (5). La Chine est représentée par des vues de Pékin, de Nankin et du Yang-Tsé-Kiang, avec le plus souvent des monuments (temples, grande muraille) et des édifices publics (24). Pour le Japon, on n’aperçoit que des paysages côtiers (2). Concernant la Corée, l’album présente des vues de Séoul et du port de Chemulpo (actuellement Incheon), avec des scènes quotidiennes, des maisons, des temples, etc. (17). La Malaisie est représentée par des vues de Penang (2) et Hawaï par des photos prises à Honolulu (2). L’album s’achève par des photos du canal de Suez (5). Construits au IXe siècle en l’honneur du dieu hindou Shiva, les temples de Prambanan sont constitués d’un ensemble de 240 édifices situés au centre de Java, dans les environs de Yogyakarta. Quant au temple de Borobudur, également situé dans le centre de l’île, il fut construit vers 800 puis abandonné vers 1100. Redécouvert en 1814, il fut dégagé et restauré. Prambanan et Borobudur sont actuellement inscrits à l’inventaire du patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco. Né à Amsterdam en 1876, Jacobus Theodorus Boelen était propriétaire de l’entreprise familiale Jacobus Boelen, négociants en vin depuis 1733. D’après une note autographe signée sur une page de garde, il effectua son voyage en Asie entre janvier et octobre 1907. Il est connu pour avoir fondé l’association « Hendrick de Keyser », dont l’objet est la conservation des monuments historiques en Hollande. Officier de l’Ordre d’Orange-Nassau, il mourut en 1946 à Maarn, Utrecht (Pays-Bas). ‎Boston: Knight & Miller ca. 1900. First edition. Oblong octavo in landscape format. 10 stiff leaves bearing 10 original hand-colored albumen photographs tipped-in and all with printed captions. Photographs measure 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches. Leaves bound to stubs. Japanese-style except it opens in the Western manner gilt rose and beige brocade cloth with red string tie printed paper cover label. House in the original box with a printed label on one of the sides. Box top with split side joints. Inside front cover with charming Arts & Crafts bookplate of Alice Rosamond Kendall and a pencil presentation to her dated 1902. Book and albumens in beautiful condition. This remarkably scarce little album is almost entirely devoted to rice farming and silk cultivation in Japan. The photographer was likely Tamamura Kozacuro. "Regarded as an originator of "Yokohama shashin" for tourists Tamamura Kozaburo opened his first studio in Tokyo in 1874 and then moved to Yokohama in 1883. For the next 30 years he became one of the most successful and popular commercial photographers in Japan by selling souvenir photograph albums to foreigners and taking profitable commissions from various organizations. He received many awards for his photography before his son Tamamura Kihei took over the business in 1916" Widener Library. The captions are as follows: Ploughing a rice field; Planting rice before Osan Temple Yokohama; Cultivating rice field; Harvesting the rice crop; Farmers threshing rice; Farmer pounding rice; Sorting silkworms; Weighing kuwa leaves for feeding silkworms; Cultivating silkworms; Farmers wearing rain-coats. Contains 57 gelatin-silver prints of various sizes including 8" by 10" 7.5" by 5" and smaller most of which are adhesive-mounted with several loose plus 11 postcards depicting Kyushu Lutheran churches and one bookmark. One photograph apparently perished; several others loosening from pages. Else apparently complete.Album edges moderately worn; one photo missing a chunk at edge. Most are lightly toned but overall clean. Very good or better. <br/><br/>Well-assembled photo album compiled by an American Lutheran missionary to Japan whose face appears consistently in the majority of the photographs. The island of Kyushu is home to several Lutheran schools and churches including the Kyushu Gakuin Kyushu Lutheran College and the Janice James School both of which are pictured here having recently been built in the early 1900's. The Kyushu Lutheran mission was founded in 1893 by American missionaries; within several years they began building churches under the supervision of one Charles Lafayette Brown 1874-1921 and presumably the subjects pictured here with members of that particualr mission. The album features posed group photographs of large congregations — as large as roughly 150 — captioned with date and location in cities including Kurume Kamamoto and Saga; additionally included are many images of church services in progress plus several family portraits of church members. While Christianity began to spread when Japan phased out its isolationist policies in the 1850s Protestant evangilization in particular slowed under the military government of the Showa period the early years of which are covered by this album.These anti-Western trends were closely tied to the patriotic fervor that culminated in WWII.
