Die antike Stadt Laodikeia am Lykos wird seit 2003 ausgegraben und restauriert. -_~raggeber 'st das Ministerium für Kultur und Tourismus und die Pamukkale Jniversität. Laodikeia ist sowohl von den ehemaligen Dörfern und heutigen Stadtteilen Eskihisar, Goncali und Bozburun als auch auf drei Seiten von den Flüssen Asopos, <admos und Lykos begrenzt. Die antike Stadt liegt 6 km nördlich der Stadt Denizli. Hatte man früher angenommen, die Gründung ginge auf das 3- Jh. v. Chr. zurück, kam mit den Grabungsarbeiten eine Geschichte, die 5500 v. Chr. begann, zutage. In zahlreichen Erdbeben wurde Laodikeia zerstört, aber immer wieder aufgebaut. Nach dem verheerenden Erdbeben in der Regierungszeit von Focas (602-610) verließen die Überlebenden die Stadt jedoch endgültig und siedelten in Kaleici (heute in Denizli) und Hisarköy, am nördlichen Fuße des Salbakos (Babadag). Ihre erste Blütezeit erlebte die Stadt während der römischen Kaiserzeit, ihre zweite in der Spätantike, zwischen dem vierten und sechsten Jahrhundert, mit der Verbreitung des Christentums. Die Stadt wurde bereits früh Bischofssitz, da sie mit dem Titel eine der ersten Sieben Kirchen in Anatolien ausgezeichnet worden war. Dass sich mit dem Christentum der Lebensstil in Laodikea veränderte, insbesondere ab dem vierten Jahrhundert, nachdem die Stadt ein Wallfahrtsort geworden war, ist durch Ausgrabungen belegt. Ausdruck hierfür ist eine neue sakrale Architektur. In dieser Zeit wurden Teile von Peristylhäuser in Andachtsräme verwandelt und es entstand die Tradition der Familienkapellen. In dieser Arbeit wird zunächst knapp über die Verbreitung des Christentums in der Region berichtet und die Kirchenbauten werden im Überblick vorgestellt. Die im Jahr 2010 ausgegrabene Kirche von Laodikeia bildet dabei den Schwerpunkt. Über sie wird detailliert informiert, wobei sowohl auf ihre besondere Architektur mit Brunnen, Pastophoria, Synthronon, Ambo, Bema, Altar, Taufbecken und Korridore als auch auf die Ausschmückung der Wände mit Fresken und die der Böden mit Opus sectile und Mosaiken eingegangen wird. Darüber hinaus werden die Besonderheiten des Schutzdaches und der Besucherlaufsteg erläutert.

Depuis 2003, sur décision du Conseil des Ministres, je dirige, au nom du Ministère de la . . jre et du Tourisme et de l'Université de Pamukkale, les fouilles archéologiques et le ravail de restauration sur le site antique de Laodikeia du Lykos, situé à 6 km au nord de Denizli, entre les quartiers d'Eskis,ehir, Goncali et Bozburun (anciens villages) et cerné par trois rivières (Asopos, Kadmos et Lykos). Les fouilles ont permis de remettre en cause .a datation de la première occupation de la ville estimée au milieu du 3e s. av. J.-C. et ae proposer une occupation remontant aux années 5500 av. J.-C. La ville, qui a subi de -ombreux tremblements de terre, a toujours été reconstruite sauf après le tremblement de terre survenu durant le règne de Phocas au cours duquel la ville a été complètement rétruite. Le site a alors été abandonné et les habitants se sont installés à Kaleiçi (Denizli) et à Hisarkôy, sur les hauteurs nord de Salbakos (Babadag). La ville de Laodikeia connut son apogée pendant la période romaine puis l'Antiquité tardive, quand le christianisme fut diffusé du 4e s. au 6e s. ap. J.-C. La ville faisant oartie des sept Églises de l'Apocalypse, elle devint rapidement un siège épiscopal. _es découvertes faites sur le site montrent que le style de vie des habitants changea avec le christianisme et la ville devint un lieu de pèlerinage dès le 4e s. ap. J.-C, avec la multiplication des églises à travers la ville. On constate aussi que certaines pièces des maisons à péristyle furent converties en oratoire, donnant ainsi naissance à la tradition des chapelles familiales ultérieures. Dans cette brève présentation, l'accent a été mis sur la diffusion du christianisme dans .a région et la répartition des églises dans la ville. Les fouilles ont permis de dater l'église de Laodikeia en tenant compte des caractéristiques des vestiges et fragments découverts : les fontaines, le pastophorion, le syntronon, l'ambon, le bêma, l'autel, les fonds baptismaux, le corridor du baptistère, le baptistère, les revêtements en marbre, les fresques, l'opus sectile et les mosaïques. D'autre part, le projet de toit de protection ainsi que le parcours en acier et verre conçu pour les visiteurs sont présentés de manière détaillée.

Since 2003 excavations and restoration work at Laodikeia on the Lykos have been Undertaken by the author on behalf of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Pamukkale University. The work conducted has shown that the history of Laodikeia, which is located within the borders of Eskihisar, Goncali and Bozburun neighbourhoods (former villages) and surrounded by rivers, namely Asopos, Kadmos, and Lykos, on three sides 6 km the north of Denizli, goes back to 5500s BC, not to the third century BC as was formerly thought. The city experienced numerous earthquakes, some very devastating, but always rebuilt; however, the earthquake in the reign of Focas (r. 602-610) razed her to the ground; the site was abandoned and the survivors settled at Kaleig of Denizli and Hisarkoy on the northern foots of Salbakos (Babadag). The city of Laodikeia had her high times during the Roman Imperial period and Late Antiquity when Christianity spread from the fourth to the sixth century. As the city was one of the first Seven Churches she became a metropolitan see quite early. Evidence uncovered indicates that the lifestyle of the city changed with Christianity and the city became a venue of pilgrimage as of the fourth century. With the spread of churches as architectural monuments across the city it is observed that some rooms in the houses with peristyle courts were converted to oratories building up a tradition of family chapels. This short work first tells briefly about the spread of Christianity in the region and churches in the city. This book's main focus is the Church of Laodikeia uncovered in 2010; therefore, you will find detailed information on its architecture, fountains, pastophoria, synthronon, ambo, bema, altar, baptistery and the corridor leading to it, frescoes, opus sectile flooring, and mosaics and the dating based on excavation finds. Furthermore, the protective roof project and the steel-and-glass catwalk for visitors are presented comprehensively.

Havin travelled together in Turkey (Asia Minor / Anatolia) for several years in succession, in recently visited the area of Silifke (Seleucia ad Calycadnos) on the MEditeranean coast north of Cyprus. With the exception of the great archaeological site of Uzuncaburç (Olba / Diocaesarea), the many fascinating ruins spread around there, some along the beautiful sea-shore, others on the slopes or rocky promontories of the Taurus mountains, are practically unknown. We were deeply impressed by these rich, often wel-preserved remains, dating from Hittite to mediaeval times, comprising castles, temples, theatres, cisterns, a wide variety of graves, reliefs, churches and chapels, monasteries, mosaics. Among the most striking witnesses of the past besides Olba / Diocaesarea with the oldest preserved Corinthian temple in Asia Minor, are the extensive Roman / Byzantine city of Kanlidivane (ancient Kanitelis), the ROman rock reliefs of Adam Kayalar, the manby ornate temple-like tombs and the splendid early_Christian onastery of Alahan, perched high up in the Taurus.

The derbent organization which was established in order to protect caravans and trade-roads and developed from the 'Tutkavul' system in Ilhanlis, is one of the important roads of settlement in the Ottoman State. The derbent facilities, surrounded by walls, are built around intersections of the main roads and in places with central importance; therefore, the inhabitants live in village recorded as the ones responsible for various services are exempted from some or all taxes. I was fascinated when I first saw the Catalhoyuk map, a heritage of 'Anatolian Civilizations' which has survived 8,200 years of history, while at the same time I was greatly disappointed that such a unique map was neither known sufficiently enough nor introduced to the cartographic scholars. It was for this reason that about two years ago, I decided to conduct research into the matter. However, as I was already involved in two research projects entitled 'The History of Turkish Mapping in the Republican Era' and 'Historical Relief Maps, ' respectively, it was not possible to find time for the Catalhoyuk map. Once I had completed these studies, I started to carry out my study on 'Piri Reis Kitab-i Bahriye' (Piri Reis and His Book of the Sea) , which has been continiuing for a few years, Thus, my study of the Catalhoyuk map had been delayed once again. When I saw the map once again, in early 1999, I decided that I could not wait any longer. Even though my continuing research would be delayed, I could not avoid giving priority to the study of the Catalhoyuk map. Amorium was a city in Phrygia, Asia Minor which was founded in the Hellenistic period, flourished under the Byzantine Empire, and declined after the Arab sack of 838. It was situated on the Byzantine military road from Constantinople to Cilicia. Its ruins and höyük ('mound, tumulus') are located under and around the modern village of Hisarköy, 13 kilometers east of the district center, Emirdag, Afyonkarahisar Province, Turkey. Amorium is the Latinized version of its original Greek name Amorion. Arab / Islamic sources refer to the city as Ammuriye. Under Ottoman rule the site, which never regained importance, was called Hergen Kale.

Dabei handelt es sich einerseits um Funde, die Christian Marek auf seinen epigraphischen Surveys in den neunziger Jahren aufgenommen hat und die teils nicht mehr in die Kataloge des 1993 veröffentlichten Bandes Stadt, Ära und Territorium in Pontus-Bithynia und Nord-Galatia gelangt sind, teils außerhalb der dort behandelten Stadtterritorien gefunden wurden. Einige wenige Texte, die bereits publiziert sind, sind ergänzend hinzugenommen worden, wenn in ihnen Korrekturen, neue Lesungen oder Interpretationen vorgeschlagen werden. Es handelt sich mit wenigen Ausnahmen um kurze Grab-, Weih- und Ehreninschriften sowie Inschriften auf Meilensteinen, die als einzelne Zeugnisse geringen Informationsgehalt besitzen, jedoch in regionalen Sammlungen die epigraphische Quellenbasis einer antiken Landschaft zu bereichern vermögen. Dabei wurden sie auf der Grundlage bisheriger Forschungen und eigener Landeskenntnis den antiken Stadtterritorien zugeordnet, nach denen - von Westen (Bithynien) nach Osten (Pontos) fortschreitend - die Sammlung gegliedert ist. Jede Gruppe ist mit Verweisen auf die bisherigen epigraphischen Publikationen der Region eingeleitet. In Auswahl werden einschlägige literarische Zeugnisse (insbesondere Strabon) zitiert und - bei den kleineren Städten - gelegentlich Illustrationen städtischer Münzen beigefügt. Die Auswahl dieser Testimonia trägt zur Erklärung der behandelten Inschriften nicht unmittelbar bei, sondern ist dazu gedacht, den Leser - auch bildlich - durch die Gliederung dieser Regionen Anatoliens nach ihrer städtischen Geographie zu führen, von denen Louis Robert einmal gesagt hat: texte et illustration pourront donner une idée de leurs charactères spécifiques aux lecteurs, philologues et historiens, qui souvent connaissent presque exclusivement les côtes de l'Égée; c'est l'Asie Mineure profonde.1 Zum vorliegenden Band hat andererseits Mustafa Adak 40 weitere Inschriften geliefert, die aus dem östlichen Territorium Nikaias, aus Prusias ad Hypium, Klaudiupolis und Krateia-Flaviopolis stammen und die teilweise von ihm selbst im letzten Jahrzehnt sowie teilweise von seinem Vorgänger Sencer Sahin bereits in den 1980er Jahren aufgenommen wurden. Es handelt sich um die Inschriften Nr. 1-12, 14-34, 41-42, 61-62, 64 und 66. Die epigraphische Erschließung Nordkleinasiens ist noch immer lückenhaft. Sammlungen, die auf Ausgrabungen von Stadtzentren zurückgehen, existieren hier noch nicht, die vorhandenen beruhen auf Museumsbeständen und Bereisung, doch nur wenigen von diesen liegt eine mehrjährige, systematische Erkundung von Stadtterritorien zugrunde. Kaum eine der hier veröffentlichten Inschriften ist erkennbar älter als die Epoche der römischen Kaiserzeit. Wo Ärendaten oder andere Kriterien wie Kaisertitulaturen fehlen, kann eine engere zeitliche Einordnung nicht erfolgen. Die Datierung begnügt sich mit den Angaben Kaiserzeit, Spätantike bzw. 4. Jh. oder später. Der oft vorkommende Aureliername allein ist bekanntlich keine sichere Scheidelinie für eine Datierung nach 212 n. Chr. Die Bezeichnung Spätantike verweist auf eine Epoche, die mit der diokletianischen Neuordnung beginnt. Für eine Einordnung in diese Epoche geben uns bestimmte Ausdrücke (?????) oder sprachliche Phänomene den Ausschlag, wenn diese auch nicht vollkommen sicher sind. Eindeutig 1 L. Kriterien wie die Formen der Buchstaben sind wegen der relativ geringen Funddichte unzuverlässig und werden nicht herangezogen. Es handelt sich mit wenigen Ausnahmen um kurze Grab-, Weih- und Ehreninschriften sowie Inschriften auf Meilensteinen, die als einzelne Zeugnisse geringen Informationsgehalt besitzen, jedoch in regionalen Sammlungen die epigraphische Quellenbasis einer antiken Landschaft zu bereichern vermögen. Dabei wurden sie auf der Grundlage bisheriger Forschungen und eigener Landeskenntnis den antiken Stadtterritorien zugeordnet, nach denen - von Westen (Bithynien) nach Osten (Pontos) fortschreitend - die Sammlung gegliedert ist. Jede Gruppe ist mit Verweisen auf die bisherigen epigraphischen Publikationen der Region eingeleitet. In Auswahl werden einschlägige literarische Zeugnisse (insbesondere Strabon) zitiert und - bei den kleineren Städten - gelegentlich Illustrationen städtischer Münzen beigefügt. Die Auswahl dieser Testimonia trägt zur Erklärung der behandelten Inschriften nicht unmittelbar bei, sondern ist dazu gedacht, den Leser - auch bildlich - durch die Gliederung dieser Regionen Anatoliens nach ihrer städtischen Geographie zu führen, von denen Louis Robert einmal gesagt hat: texte et illustration pourront donner une idée de leurs charactères spécifiques aux lecteurs, philologues et historiens, qui souvent connaissent presque exclusivement les côtes de l'Égée; c'est l'Asie Mineure profonde.1 Zum vorliegenden Band hat andererseits Mustafa Adak 40 weitere Inschriften geliefert, die aus dem östlichen Territorium Nikaias, aus Prusias ad Hypium, Klaudiupolis und Krateia-Flaviopolis stammen und die teilweise von ihm selbst im letzten Jahrzehnt sowie teilweise von seinem Vorgänger Sencer Sahin bereits in den 1980er Jahren aufgenommen wurden. Es handelt sich um die Inschriften Nr. 1-12, 14-34, 41-42, 61-62, 64 und 66. Die epigraphische Erschließung Nordkleinasiens ist noch immer lückenhaft. Sammlungen, die auf Ausgrabungen von Stadtzentren zurückgehen, existieren hier noch nicht, die vorhandenen beruhen auf Museumsbeständen und Bereisung, doch nur wenigen von diesen liegt eine mehrjährige, systematische Erkundung von Stadtterritorien zugrunde. Kaum eine der hier veröffentlichten Inschriften ist erkennbar älter als die Epoche der römischen Kaiserzeit. Wo Ärendaten oder andere Kriterien wie Kaisertitulaturen fehlen, kann eine engere zeitliche Einordnung nicht erfolgen. Die Datierung begnügt sich mit den Angaben Kaiserzeit, Spätantike bzw. 4. Jh. oder später. Der oft vorkommende Aureliername allein ist bekanntlich keine sichere Scheidelinie für eine Datierung nach 212 n. Chr. Die Bezeichnung Spätantike verweist auf eine Epoche, die mit der diokletianischen Neuordnung beginnt. Für eine Einordnung in diese Epoche geben uns bestimmte Ausdrücke (?????) oder sprachliche Phänomene den Ausschlag, wenn diese auch nicht vollkommen sicher sind. Eindeutig 1 L. Knidos is a hidden treasure, situated on the far southwest coast of Turkey ¿ an ancient city in a setting of great natural beauty, remote, and yet redolent with history. Its rocky landscape dotted with patches of unspoilt wild vegetation combines with a pleasantly mild climate to give added attraction to the charm of this archaeological site, where winds provide a cool breeze even in hottest summer months. Because of its location at the end of a long peninsula, Knidos is hard to reach by road, and most visitors prefer to arrive by sea. However, those who choose to use the difficult overland route are rewarded with a journey through an attractive but changing landscape of pine forests, red and black rocky outcrops formed from cooled lava, and almond and olive groves, a main source of income for the local people. The last stage of the road passes through the ancient cemetery or necropolis area. Finally, one reaches the spot from where there is a uniquely beautiful view, and one looks out across theterraced slopes and harbours of Knidos. Although excavations have been carried out at the site for many years, Knidos, because of its remote and isolated location, has remained unspoilt and has not been overwhelmed by a large volume of tourist traffic. This book is intended to provide visitors with a brief history of this important ancient city and an easy guide to the site as it is today. The surviving ruined buildings and monuments are described in a set order, as listed in the contents, so that visitors are given the best route to follow. Those buildings that are most visible and whose excavation has been completed are listed first and in greater detail, while others, such as the Large Theatre, which are difficult to reach, or areas that are still being excavated or studied, like the Sanctuary of the Muses and the Necropolis, are described more briefly.
